Abstract

Black rice (Oryza sativa L. indica) is a pigmented rice plant that has high antioxidant content. Drought is an abiotic stress that can inhibit the growth and productivity of rice plants. Planting of local black rice with several drought treatments using PEG 6000 was observed in this study. The aim of this research is to determine the morphological and physiological response of local black rice plants in Purbalingga and Purwokerto at various levels of drought stress. This research used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 2 factors. The first factor is 2 local black rice plants, namely Purbalingga and Purwokerto. The second factor was drought stress treatment via PEG 6000 with 4 treatments, namely 0% PEG (control), 5%, 10%, and 15%. The results showed that when applying 15% PEG, local black rice in Purbalingga and Purwokerto experienced a decrease in plant height and number of leaves but increased root length. Based on the physiological response, when addition 15% PEG there was a decrease in the amount of chlorophyll and an increase in the content of H2O2 and anthocyanins in both Purbalingga and Purwokerto local black rice.   Keywords: Black Rice, Drought Stress, Morphological Response, Physiological Response.

Abstract

Abstract

Kemiri Village, Panti District, Jember Regency is one of the rice-producing villages but faces the problem of scarcity of subsidized fertilizers and ineffective management of agricultural waste. This needs to be overcome with simple but effective handling. This community service activity aims to empower farmers through the production of Local Microorganisms (MOL) and Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) to increase rice productivity while supporting the potential of livestock in the village. The target partner in this activity is the Sidodadi farmer group consisting of 30 farmers. The implementation method includes training in making MOL and PGPR, applying PGPR to rice plants, and making silage as animal feed. The results of the activity show that the activities carried out related to the use of PGPR can help increase rice growth, improve yields, and reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers. In addition, making silage successfully processes green fodder into quality feed that supports food security for livestock in the village. In the future, this activity is expected to strengthen the sustainability of agricultural and livestock practices in Kemiri Village and improve the economy of farmers.

Abstract

Abstract

Population of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the rumen of fattening livestock is relatively high and has the potential to be utilized. This study aimed to screen and identify LAB from the rumen as probiotic candidates. The research used rumen liquid from cattle, goats, and sheep collected from slaughterhouses in Bondowoso. The screening and identification processes were conducted at the Livestock Agroindustry Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jember. The screening included colony morphology, Gram staining, cell shape, catalase test, and Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas production ability. The final identification of potential probiotic bacterial candidates was based on their bile salt tolerance. The results showed that there were LAB candidates with 22 isolates (from sheep/OS), 19 isolates (from cattle/OC), and 18 isolates (from goats/OG). The bacterial colony shape included oval (2OS, 1OC), circular (11OS, 18OC, 12OG), irregular (7OS, 6OG), and spindle (2OS). Colony sizes ranged from small (0.5–1.2 mm: 7 OS, 9OC, 4OG), medium (1.2–3.0 mm: 7OS, 7OC, 7OG), to large (3.0–5.0 mm: 8OS, 3OC, 7OG), with the majority of colonies being white and cream-colored, and a minority being yellow. All bacteria were Gram-positive, with coccus (19OS, 14OC, 2OG) and bacillus (3OS, 5OC, 16OG) shaped cells. All samples were capable of producing CO2 gas, and 50% of the isolates possessed catalase enzymes. Based on bile salt tolerance tests, 15% of the isolates had a survival rate of over 50%. In conclusion, LAB from the rumen, particularly goats, were identified as potential probiotic candidates for further development.

Abstract

Entomopathogenic fungi are important biological control agents and also have a good impact on the environment. One of the many entomopathogenic fungi that is safe for use by humans is Metarhizium anisopliae. Besides being parasitic, this type of fungus is also saprophytic in that this fungus utilizes organic matter as food. The organic material used will later become the media or substrate for the propagation of Metarhizium anisopliae. The substrate used is usually PDA (Potatoe Dextrose Agar), but due to the high price, farmers usually try to use other organic materials which are more affordable, and what is often used is corn rice. However, until now it has not been confirmed which substrate is the best for Metarhizium anisopliae. Therefore this study aims to determine the viability of entomopathogenic fungi on organic fertilizer substrates. Analysis of the research parameters was carried out at the Agrotechnology Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jember. The study design used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 5 repetitions, so there were 25 sample units, with observations for 8 weeks so that the total number of samples was 200 samples. The treatments used included P0: using corn-rice media, P1: using chicken manure media, P2: using cow manure media, P3: using goat manure media, P4: using bat manure media. The research variables used were incubation period, final sample weight, and conidia density. The aim of this study was to determine the most suitable substrate for the growth and effectiveness of Metarhizium anisopliae as a biological control agent. The best-performing media were found to be chicken manure and cow manure. The authors suggest further emphasis on the scientific contribution of this research and recommend these substrates for practical field application

Abstract

Stevia plant, as an alternative to sugarcane, is a plant that is susceptible to drought. The growth and yield of the stevia plant is highly dependent on the availability of sufficient water and nutrients. To get optimal crop yields is necessary to pay attention to the water needs of the stevia-growing media. The right intensity of watering and using organic fertilizers are efforts that can be done to prevent drought. This study aimed to determine the effect of vermicompost and water application intervals on the growth and yield of stevia plants. A divided plot design was used in this study with 12 treatment combinations with three replications. The basic pattern of completely randomized design (CRD) consists of 2 factors with three replications. The main plot is the interval of giving water (I), namely I1 = 1 day, once, I2 = once every 2 days, I3 = once every 3 days and Subplots, namely the dose of vermicompost, consist of 4 levels, namely V0 = 0 tons/ha, V1 = 5 tons /ha, V2 = 10 tons/ha, V3 = 15 tons/ha. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance. The significant difference between treatments is determined using Duncan's Multiple Distance Test at 5%. The best watering interval is the interval of giving once every three days and vermicompost 5 tons/ha.
