Abstract

Tour of Lake Toba is a musical performance initiated by Rumah Karya Indonesia as the organizational institution responsible for this performance which is based on the idiom of traditional musical culture in the Lake Toba area. The Tour of Lake Toba musical performance has the theme Sira, which is an acronym for Sinergi Rasa. Sira in the lexicon of the North Sumatra Cultural region means salt brought by sira travelers or salt bearers from coastal areas to the highlands as an artifact of the exchange of objects and knowledge that occurred in the past. The aim of this research is to discuss the actor and power dimensions in the Tour of Lake Toba musical performance. The method used in this research is qualitative using a naturalistic approach. The research is discussed using Jo Hatch's rational organization theory approach. The research results show that the tour of Lake Toba musical performance involves various actors, both main actors and supporting actors. These actors create cooperation that produces a performance output that is bound by a cooperation agreement. From this agreement, a process emerged consisting of planning, organizing, mobilizing and supervising the musical performance tour of Lake Toba in the cities of Bandung, Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Solo. Rumah Karya Indonesia Institution builds a strong social network. These connections and relationships are used to obtain support, resources, and information. So this becomes a network that provides specific power in carrying out North Sumatran traditional performances on the island of Java.

Abstract

This study examines the pedagogical and theological functions of musical inculturation in Catholic faith education. Drawing on post–Vatican II principles of contextual liturgy, the research analyzes how Javanese musical elements, particularly gamelan textures and macapat melodic patterns, are integrated into Catholic worship to support cognitive comprehension, affective engagement, and active congregational participation. Using a qualitative design involving in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, the study employs thematic analysis to identify how inculturated music shapes faith formation. The findings show that inculturated musical practices enhance three measurable dimensions of faith education: (1) cognitive understanding, demonstrated by a clearer grasp of liturgical texts expressed in culturally familiar musical forms; (2) affective devotion, indicated by heightened emotional resonance and spiritual focus during worship; and (3) participatory involvement, reflected in increased vocal and embodied participation of congregants. The study also identifies a persistent tension between maintaining universal liturgical norms and embracing local cultural expressions, revealing an ongoing negotiation between ecclesial identity and Javanese cultural values. The novelty of this research lies in demonstrating that musical inculturation functions as a form of nonverbal religious pedagogy, simultaneously strengthening Catholic doctrinal understanding and affirming local cultural identity. This contributes to interdisciplinary discussions in theology, pedagogy, and ethnomusicology by offering an empirically grounded model of how liturgical music can operate as an effective medium for contextual faith education.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aimed to examine the effects of augmented reality–based instruction, video-based instruction, and traditional instruction on fourth-grade students’ environmental literacy, encompassing environmental knowledge, environmental attitudes, and pro-environmental behavior, within an Adiwiyata-certified elementary eco-school. Methodology: A quasi-experimental design was employed involving 81 fourth-grade students from an Adiwiyata-certified elementary eco-school in Semarang, Indonesia. Data were collected using a validated multiple-choice environmental knowledge test and Likert-scale questionnaires measuring environmental attitudes and pro-environmental behavior. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with IBM SPSS Statistics version 26. Main Findings: The results revealed a significant multivariate effect of instructional method on overall environmental literacy. Augmented reality–based instruction produced the highest post-test scores in environmental knowledge and environmental attitudes, followed by video-based instruction and traditional instruction. Instructional method also exerted a statistically significant but smaller effect on pro-environmental behavior. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides novel empirical evidence through a three-arm comparison of augmented reality, video-based, and traditional instruction within the Adiwiyata (eco school) framework. It advances environmental education research by demonstrating differentiated cognitive, affective, and behavioral effects of immersive and non-immersive instructional methods at the elementary school level.
