Abstract

The Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method is a preliminary method for screening anticancer compounds by looking at the cytotoxic effect of a sample that will be tested on Artemia salina shrimp larvae. This study aims to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of ethanol extract of green betel leaves (Piper betle L.) on Artemia salina Leach larvae using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. Extraction was carried out by maceration method using 96% ethanol, and phytochemical screening to show the presence of secondary metabolite on green betel leef. Cytotoxicity tests were carried out at five extract concentrations (concentrations of 50 ppm, 100 ppm, 250 ppm, 500 ppm, and 750 ppm). Based on the results of the research carried out, it can be concluded that the results show that the percentage of larvae deaths ranges from 30-80% and the highest mortality was obtained at a concentration of 750 ppm with a total of 26 larval deaths, this death was in line with the increase in concentration. The Lethal Concentration (LC50) value obtained was 121.3317 ppm. In conclusion, green betel leaf extract contains secondary metabolite compounds which cause cytotoxic effects on Artemia salina Leach shrimp larvae with a mortality percentage of 30-80% and the LC50 value is 121.3317 ppm.

Abstract

Pregnancy involves physical, psychological, and social aspects, with maternal weight gain being an important indicator for assessing maternal health and fetal development. This study aims to analyze the relationship between maternal weight gain during pregnancy and birth weight of infants born at Sitti Khadijah 1 Muhammadiyah Mother and Child Hospital in Makassar. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted, involving 40 pregnant women who gave birth between January and February 2025. Data were collected through medical records and the Mother and Child Health Book, then analyzed using the Chi-square test. The results showed that most mothers experienced weight gain within the normal category (70.7%), and 95% of babies were born with normal birth weight. There was a significant association between maternal weight gain and birth weight, with a p-value of 0.042. The study concluded that normal or higher maternal weight gain is associated with a higher likelihood of giving birth to infants with normal birth weight. This study emphasizes the importance of monitoring maternal weight gain to prevent low birth weight.

Abstract

Burns represent a significant form of injury that leads to substantial tissue damage, necessitating complex management strategies tailored to the degree and total body surface area (TBSA) affected. The complexity of burn management is notably increased in patients with comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus can induce vascular disorders and peripheral neuropathy, which collectively impair the natural wound healing process. This report details the case of a 42-year-old male who presented to the Emergency Department of Makassar City Hospital with burns on his right and left legs. The injuries were sustained approximately 30 minutes prior from a spill of hot liquid asphalt cement at his workplace and were accompanied by a significant burning sensation. The patient, weighing 58 kg, reported no fever, headache, dyspnea, nausea, or vomiting, with normal bowel and bladder function. He had no history of similar injuries, allergies, or hypertension. However, he had a known history of diabetes mellitus, which was managed with metformin 500 mg three times daily. A family history of diabetes was present on his maternal side. Burns, or combustio, are defined as tissue damage or loss resulting from contact with thermal sources like fire and hot water, or with chemicals, electricity, and radiation. Hot water and flames are the most frequent causes of burns. The primary principle of first aid is to halt the burning process and reduce the wound's temperature. For flame-related burns, this involves the "Stop, Drop, Cover (Face) & Roll" technique.

Abstract

Burn injuries are a global health issue that cause high morbidity and mortality, particularly in low- to middle-income countries such as Indonesia. Infection is the most common complication that prolongs hospitalization and increases the risk of death in burn patients. The aim of this study is to review the relationship between infection incidence and the length of hospital stay in burn patients based on national and international literature. Based on the review of 10 articles, it was found that infections caused by resistant pathogenic bacteria such as  Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Staphylococcus aureus significantly extend the duration of treatment. Other risk factors, including the extent of the burn, delayed treatment, and immune response, also affect the length of hospitalization. Proper and early management—including wound care, antimicrobial therapy, and community education—is crucial for accelerating the healing

Abstract

Melasma is a common hyperpigmentation disorder that typically appears on sun-exposed areas of the face and is often associated with Ultraviolet (UV) exposure and hormonal factors. This study aimed to examine the relationship between UV exposure and melasma incidence among outdoor workers at Minasa Maupa Central Market, considering hormonal contraceptive use as a confounding factor. A cross-sectional design was used, involving 32 female respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via observation and validated questionnaires, then analyzed using univariate and bivariate Chi-Square tests. Results indicated a significant relationship between prolonged UV exposure (?4 hours) and melasma occurrence (p=0.022), as well as between hormonal contraceptive use and melasma (p=0.028). However, no significant interaction was found between UV exposure duration and contraceptive use (p=0.849). These findings highlight that UV exposure and hormonal contraceptive use independently contribute to melasma risk. Skin protection education and medical monitoring for contraceptive users are recommended preventive strategies. Future research using longitudinal design and direct UV intensity measurement is suggested to enhance understanding and accuracy.
