Abstract

Gender equality and justice are still problems in society, including in the context of higher education. This research aims to reveal (a) students' views on work learning in groups of different genders; (b) gender stereotypes that arise in student teamwork; (c) efforts to minimize the development of stereotypes in the campus setting. This study uses a quantitative approach by collecting data by distributing online questionnaires (Google Form) to 102 active students from several faculties at University X in Jakarta. The questionnaire is in the form of 7 Likert scale statements with five options and two open-ended questions. The data was analyzed descriptively and quantitatively. The results of this study showed that 93% of respondents did not object to teamwork, and 48% admitted that they often feel comfortable working in teams with the opposite sex. As many as 31% of respondents disagree and tend to be neutral on the assumption that women can be more stable and flexible than men in teamwork. Similarly, 33% of respondents agreed that men have more analytical thinking skills than women in teamwork. The results of this study show that there are still gender stereotypes among university students when working in teams. The campus can make efforts as an agent of change to socialize gender equality and continue developing team-based learning (TBL) as teamwork.

Abstract

Abstract

As a form of participation of universities, which are members of LLDIKTI region III, for survivors of the eruption of Mount Semeru in Lumajang, East Java, a thematic community service program (KKNT) "Building the Country" has been held on November 12-25, 2023. One of the targets of the activity is SDN Sumberwuluh 02, Candipuro District, Sumbermujur Village. The school wall has been used as a mural containing educational messages on literacy and cultural literacy to motivate Mount Semeru survivor students to remain enthusiastic about learning and proud of the new environment and culture of the region. The stages of activities include preparation, mural painting activity, and monitoring-evaluation. The mural was completed in three days, involving students, lecturers, and teachers working together. The activity results show that the murals have been well drawn, attractive, and communicative. Combining images, text, and colors in murals with positive messages provides a cheerful atmosphere relevant to students' daily lives without ignoring Lumajang icons. Thus, literacy education murals are suitable for use in the school environment. The school is also helped by the promotion of the school through educational murals.

Abstract

The results of the international study on reading literacy show that Indonesian students' reading ability lags far behind other countries. Even nationally, the government measures students' reading literacy levels inadequately. The government initiated the School Literacy Movement (Gerakan Literasi Sekolah/GLS) to increase interest in reading in 2016. The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of GLS in four elementary schools in Cisauk District, South Tangerang, during the pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic covid-19 period. The participants of this study were 17 people, consisting of school principals, teachers, and librarians. This research is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of FGDs, interviews, and observation. Data analysis techniques include reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. This study found that the GLS applied in the four elementary schools is still at the habituation stage of 15 minutes of reading before studying, providing a reading corner, reading in the library, and displaying students' work in wall magazines and classrooms. During the pandemic, students have more opportunities to access readings on the internet to do assignments compared to the pre-pandemic period. In the post-pandemic era, literacy has not been fully revived. Due to a lack of understanding, school principals and teachers have not varied the practice of GLS and still need mentoring.

Pidada mangrove trees grow in the beach Bahagia Village area, Muaragembong District, Bekasi Regency, West Java. The potential of pidada fruit has been widely utilized by community members in Muaragembong into processed food products of various healthy foods and drinks. One type of food that is widely produced by the local community is mangrove pidada dodol. The Senturi group in Kampung Beting, Pantai Bahagia Village since 2016 has produced pidada mangrove dodol, but the processing is still done conventionally using a kitchen knife and wooden ruler, so that the cut results show an uneven shape including thickness and the cutting process takes quite a long time. The purpose of this community service activity is to improve the quality of pidada mangrove dodol through the application of appropriate technology for pidada mangrove dodol cutting machine using an electric motor drive system and rotary knife type. The activities that took place from June to September 2024 were divided into four stages, namely field surveys, making cutting machines, training in the use of cutting machines, and mentoring and evaluation. The Senturi group was trained in the use of the cutting machine and had hands-on experience with the machine. The results of the implementation of the cutting machine are able to improve the cutting process of dodol dough with a time of 90 seconds and produce dodol pidada pieces with a size of 18x18 mm with a production capacity of 42 kg/hour, and the pieces have uniform dimensions and sizes; thus the use of this cutting machine has an impact on the household industry.

Abstract

Written communication in an educational setting aims to convey messages related to academics or finances. The messages delivered contain either positive or negative information. This study aims to reveal the organization of negative business messages preferred by higher education students while receiving messages from university parties. The participants are the vice-chancellors for finance and academic affairs or the representatives (heads of divisions) at three private universities within the Association of Catholic Higher Learning Institutions as the senders and 170 active students in several universities as the receivers. This study uses quantitative and qualitative descriptive approaches. I collected data through online questionnaires, semistructured interviews, and observation of written documents in email and WhatsApp. I proposed four essential dimensions of negative message, namely, organization/approach, language, medium, and response, with the Likert scale questionnaire. I also inserted two cases of negative messages at the end of the questionnaire to find students’ tendency to select one they liked. The questionnaire results are used to discover the participants’ preference for the approach of relaying negative messages, corroborated by the interviews. The study found that students preferred direct approach to negative business messages. Buffers, prevalent in negative business with indirect order, are found in the email. A positive tone was not found at the end of the message. The study concluded that negative messages should be conveyed in writing with direct organizations and positive language and addressed to students before being forwarded to their parents
