Abstract

The low reading interest of school-age children in West Pasaman Regency presents a serious challenge to the development of education and a culture of literacy. This community service program aims to develop innovative management of Community Reading Parks (TBM) as a strategy to improve children's literacy. The background of the activity is based on the fact that most TBMs in this region are not optimally managed, lack innovation, and lack engaging activities for children. The implementation method uses a participatory approach involving TBM managers, teachers, parents, and literacy volunteers. Activities include TBM management training, the provision of creative reading corners, the development of educational game-based literacy programs, and regular mentoring for children. Innovations implemented include storytelling corners, weekly reading clubs, and the integration of simple digital media to attract the interest of the younger generation. The results of the activity show an increase in children's enthusiasm in utilizing TBMs, marked by an increase in the number of daily visits and active involvement in literacy activities. Furthermore, the capacity of TBM managers to design sustainable programs has increased. This program demonstrates that innovative TBM management can be an effective strategy in fostering a culture of literacy among school-age children in West Pasaman.

Abstract

Khatam is a communal tradition frequently practiced by reciting the verses of the Qur’an from the opening chapter to the end. This study examines two commonly observed Qur’anic reading traditions among Muslims: completing the Qur’an (khatam) during the month of Ramadan and completing the Qur’an in the ritual of “seven days and seven nights” at the gravesite of a deceased person. The main issue explored is the distinction between these two practices in terms of their conformity with Islamic teachings and their implications for public understanding. Completing the Qur’an in Ramadan is widely regarded as a meritorious practice due to the month’s blessed nature, whereas the practice of completing the Qur’an over seven days and seven nights at a graveyard is often subject to scrutiny, particularly regarding its legal basis in Islamic jurisprudence. The research employs a qualitative approach, drawing upon hadith analysis, Qur’anic interpretation, and scholarly opinions concerning both practices. The study also incorporates an interview with an informant familiar with the local tradition. The findings indicate that completing the Qur’an during Ramadan is strongly supported by numerous hadiths and the practices of the Companions, making it a recommended devotional act. Meanwhile, the practice of completing the Qur’an for seven days and nights at a gravesite does not have a clearly established foundation in Islamic law. However, among the four Sunni legal schools, two—Imam al-Shafi‘i and Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal—hold the view that reciting the Qur’an at gravesites is permissible and even encouraged. According to these scholars, praying for the deceased, particularly by family members, is highly recommended.

Abstract

The phenomenon of mosque ayatisation in Sumatra reflects a new trend in Islamic religious practice, representing efforts to bring Qur’anic values to life within the social sphere. This study aims to analyze the trends, motives, and impacts of ayatisation on mosque prosperity through the living Qur’an approach. Employing a qualitative method with a phenomenological framework and field research, the study was conducted in several mosques across Sumatra that have implemented ayatisation in architectural design, spatial aesthetics, and religious activities. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation, and were thematically analyzed to reveal the religious and social implications of this practice. The findings indicate that mosque ayatisation has emerged as a form of contemporary religiosity rooted in the collective desire to visualize and internalize Qur’anic values within worship spaces. The primary motives include spiritual devotion, Islamic educational orientation, and the strengthening of communal religious identity. The positive impacts of ayatisation are evident in the increased participation of congregants, the enhancement of mosques’ social roles, and the revitalization of prosperity grounded in the values of rahmatan lil ‘alamin. This study concludes that ayatisation serves as a tangible manifestation of the living Qur’an, fostering stronger connections between the sacred text, worship spaces, and the social transformation of Muslim communities in Sumatra.

Abstract

This study examines the regulation of interfaith inheritance within the framework of Islamic law and the Compilation of Islamic Law (KHI) through a normative analysis of Indonesian court decisions. Islamic inheritance law fundamentally requires religious uniformity between the decedent and heirs, positioning religious difference as a legal impediment to inheritance. The KHI adopts classical Islamic jurisprudence by explicitly stipulating that only Muslim heirs are entitled to inherit from a Muslim decedent. However, judicial practice in Indonesia demonstrates a progressive development, particularly through Supreme Court decisions that introduce wasiat wajibah as an alternative legal mechanism to protect the civil rights of non-Muslim family members. This legal construction does not confer heir status but provides a mandatory bequest as a form of equitable distribution. The coexistence of strict normative rules and judicial discretion reflects an ongoing effort to balance legal certainty, justice, and social realities in pluralistic Indonesian society. The findings indicate that interfaith inheritance law in Indonesia evolves through jurisprudence rather than legislative reform, reinforcing the role of courts in bridging doctrinal rigidity and substantive justice.

Abstract

From an Islamic perspective, marriage is not merely a civil matter, nor merely a family or cultural matter, but also relates to religious issues and events, as it is conducted to fulfill the provisions of Allah SWT and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). A siri marriage is a marriage conducted without official state registration, thus having significant legal implications for women and children. While religiously, this marriage is considered valid, from a state legal perspective, unregistered marriages result in women losing their rights as wives, such as the right to maintenance, inheritance rights, and legal protection within the household. Furthermore, women in siri marriages lack a strong legal basis to file for divorce or assert their rights in court. Meanwhile, children born from siri marriages have only a civil relationship with their mothers, thus facing obstacles in obtaining birth certificates listing the father's name, inheritance rights, and rights to care and education from the father. Siri marriages are also often used as a way to freely practice polygamy without following proper procedures.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance legal awareness among the community through a participatory training and outreach model. The underlying issue addressed by this program is the low level of public understanding regarding legal rights and obligations, as well as the prevalence of rule violations due to limited legal knowledge. The program was implemented using a field-based approach, beginning with a needs analysis, followed by the development of relevant legal materials, and culminating in interactive training sessions and open public outreach activities. The methods employed included lectures, group discussions, case studies, and simple simulations to facilitate community understanding of common legal issues encountered in daily life, such as land disputes, debt agreements, and family-related matters. The results indicate a significant improvement in community legal awareness, as reflected in active participation during discussions and the participants’ ability to identify appropriate legal solutions in accordance with applicable regulations. Furthermore, the program contributed to strengthening the relationship between the community and village officials as legal facilitators. Through the training and outreach activities, community members demonstrated increased confidence in addressing legal issues and a stronger commitment to complying with legal norms. This program demonstrates that training and outreach models can serve as effective instruments in fostering legal awareness and promoting a law-abiding culture at the local level.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the problem of decreasing quality of memorization of the Qur'an in memorizers of the Qur'an after the memorization process is completed, which is caused by a lack of consistency in muraja'ah. The purpose of this study is to examine the urgency of muraja'ah and identify effective muraja'ah methods to maintain the quality of memorization. This study uses a literature study method by analyzing verses of the Qur'an, hadith, and literature related to muraja'ah. The results of the study indicate that muraja'ah is very urgent to maintain the strength, accuracy, and understanding of memorization of the Qur'an. Effective muraja'ah methods include daily, weekly, and monthly muraja'ah, as well as the use of variation methods such as reading alone, together, or listening to recordings. This study recommends the application of consistent and scheduled muraja'ah methods to maintain the quality of memorization of the Qur'an in the long term.
