Abstract

This paper discusses teaching approach and media in English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom. It brings to lights vocabulary teaching, bilingual approach and using flashcards in the teaching of vocabulary to young learners. As teaching vocabulary can take place from very early stage to a high level of learning, its introduction needs to be managed in such a way using an appropriate approach along with utilizing particular media, such as flashcards, that the learners can enjoy the teaching process. This is based on the consideration that not all teaching media fit in the context of vocabulary teaching through bilingual approach. For this reason, it is important that teachers of English whose concern is how young learners learn vocabulary adopt appropriate teaching media on their behalf. Once the learners feel secured and confortable with the media used, it is guaranteed that they can learn as many words as possible and, thus, the desired outcome of the learning can be projected to occur. This article emphasizes the issue of bringing together bilingual approach and flahcards together in the teaching of vocabulary to young learners.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to examine whether the application of POSSE (predict, organize, search, summarize, evaluate) strategy could enhance the understanding of reading skills of tenth-grade pupils in SMAN 7 PALU. This study utilized designing quasi-experimental, dividing participants into an experiment group and a control group. The technique of purposive sampling was employed to decide the sample, comprising 36 students from the experimental group and 35 pupils from the control group. Gathering of data involved pre-test and post-test assessments, with analysis conducted utilizing paired sample t-tests with the support of SPSS v.29 for windows. The findings indicated that applying of the POSSE approach effectively enhanced the understanding of reading among tenth-grade students attending SMAN 7 PALU. This conclusion was substantiated by the results of conducting the paired sample t-test, which showed a statistically notable disparity (2-tailed=0.0010.05) in the students’ learning outcomes between the initial assessment and subsequent assessment.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effectiveness of using  Shadowing Technique in improving pronunciation abilty of grade seven students of SMP Negeri 3 Palu. The research employed a quasi-experimental design, involving an experimental group and a control group, with a total of 62 students from each group (VII G and VII I). The sample was chosen using a cluster random sampling technique. A Pronunciation test was used as the instrument of the research. The data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test with the assistance of SPSS 24. The results indicated that Shadowing Technique was effective in improving seven grade students pronunciation ability. This was supported by the significant difference in learning outcomes between the pre-test and the post-test, and evidenced by a paired sample t-test with a value significance (2-tailed) of 0.00 0.05.

Abstract

Scaffolding is a teaching method in which teachers provide structured, temporary support to help students develop independent learning skills gradually. In the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), scaffolding is particularly useful in vocabulary acquisition, especially for young learners who are still building basic language skills. This study aims to find out the effectiveness of the scaffolding method in increasing students’ vocabulary size at MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu. Students in grade VIII participated in this research. Two classes were identified as the control and experimental classes in this quasi-experimental research design. The researcher used a pretest and a posttest to collect data. Subsequently, SPSS version 23 was used to analyze the collected data. The result shows that the posttest mean score for students in the experimental class (78.22) was higher than the mean score in the control class (59.56). Furthermore, based on the result of the independence sample t-test, the sig (2 tailed) value (0.001) was lower than 0.05. It indicated that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, the scaffolding method can increase the vocabulary size of grade VIII students at MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu.
