Abstract

Background: Stunting is a significant malnutrition problem in Indonesia, and community health cadres play a vital role in addressing it through programs like Care for Child Development (CCD) training. This study aimed to delineate the knowledge and self-efficacy of cadres who participated in CCD training in Yogyakarta in 2018, comparing their status in 2022.  Methods: In October 2022, a quantitative cross-sectional approach was utilized to examine the knowledge and self-efficacy of 56 cadres who had undergone CCD training in 2018, organized by the same authors and documented in a prior publication, with participants selected through total sampling. Three instruments were utilized, including a participant demographic survey, the CKCDI, and the GSES. The paired t-test was employed to analyzed the data.  Results: The study's results reveal a significant difference (p=0.002) in the mean knowledge scores of cadres following their participation in the Care For Child Development (CCD) training program in 2018 and four years later. The mean score was 13.39 in 2018, decreased to 11.9 in 2022. Likewise, the self-efficacy component among cadres exhibited a reduction, with mean scores of 30.93 in 2018 and 29.4 in 2022. However, it is important to note that there is no statistically significant difference in self-efficacy (p=0.106). The decline in average knowledge scores over the four-year period may be attributed to potential knowledge decay.  Conclusion: This study underscores the significance of sustained training and support for community health workers, emphasizing the need for flexible approaches to maintain their knowledge and self-efficacy over time.

Abstract

Introducing complementary foods at six months helps supplement nutrients and address potential eating challenges in infants. Childhood eating difficulties can contribute to growth issues. This scoping review aimed to identify the components of feeding rules for infants aged 6-24 months. A systematic search of three electronic databases yielded 5,174 abstracts, with 18 complete articles assessed for eligibility. After eliminating 8 articles, 10 met the criteria. The feeding rules comprise three main components: schedule, environment, and procedure. Adhering to these basic rules can enhance a child's growth rate and reduce the risk of failure to thrive. Responsive feeding is closely linked to these rules, categorized based on feeding schedule, procedures, and environment. Hence, it is crucial for healthcare professionals to provide counseling on the fundamental principles of complementary feeding.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on nursing students’ academic and clinical performance. Nursing institutions have provided remote learning to continue the learning process. However, students have met several obstacles that caused a decrease in the quality of learning. Remote learning for education requires the support of information and communication technology. However, studies related to how the COVID-19 pandemic affected nursing education in Indonesia are still rarely done. Accordingly, this study was conducted to evaluate the implementation of remote learning for nursing education during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 331 members of the Association of Indonesian Nurse Education Center (AINEC). The instrument used was the Guidelines of Filling Out Remote Learning. The results showed that 51% of the study programs implemented remote learning, while 69% of the regulations for remote learning were created by rectors. The most common teaching materials were visual, text, and audio-visual content. These materials were distributed through WhatsApp Group, Learning Management System (LMS), and video conference. To support the process of remote learning, nursing institutions need to improve information technology staff and cooperate agreement with other institutions. Overall, the remote learning process needs to be further improved to increase the students’ learning quality.

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a common malnutrition problem among children in the world. The Care for Children Development (CCD) intervention is a strategy to reduce stunting. Objective: This study aimed to identify the effect of culturally modified CCD training on the knowledge, attitude, and efficacy (KAE) of cadres about stunting in the community. Methods: We conducted a community-based study with a quasi-experimental research design using a comparison group. The study was conducted from March 2018 to February 2019 at three Public Health Centers in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The total participants were 69 in the intervention group and 53 in the comparison group. Cadres in the intervention group received two days of training on a culturally modified CCD guideline. In contrast, cadres in the comparison group received a brief explanation (a one-day training) on that program. The nurses from three public health centers were facilitators in this training. Knowledge and self-efficacy were assessed using a modified Caregiver Knowledge of Child Development Inventory and General Self-efficacy Scale, respectively. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests. Results: All 122 cadres completed the training. In the intervention group, CCD training significantly increased cadres’ knowledge (median score 14 vs. 11), attitude (58 vs. 55), and efficacy (30 vs. 28), all with p <0.001. In the comparison group, the short explanation of CCD significantly improved cadres’ knowledge (median score 12 vs. 10) and efficacy (29 vs. 27) but not their attitude. The delta or change in score before and after CCD training for cadres’ attitude in the intervention group was significantly higher than that of the comparison group (3.78 vs. 0.72; p = 0.050). Conclusion: A culturally modified CCD training significantly improves cadres’ KAE in the intervention group and cadres’ knowledge in the comparison group. The learning delivery methods with demonstrations and role-plays significantly improved the cadres’ attitudes as health educators for stunted mothers in the community. For sustainability, community health nurses should regularly collaborate with cadres to improve the nutritional status of children in their area.

Abstract

Background: Childhood stunting poses serious long-term risks to cognitive development, education, and adult productivity. While research has explored stunting’s causes and effects, there is a lack of focus on maternal knowledge of nutrition-focused nurturing care for stunted children. This gap limits the ability to design effective interventions that target improved caregiving practices. Objective: This study aimed to assess maternal knowledge of nutrition-focused nurturing care and explore associated factors, including child gender, maternal age, education, income, and prior exposure to nurturing care information, among mothers of stunted children aged 6-23 months in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 73 mothers in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta. Data were collected from February to March 2024 using a validated self-assessment questionnaire covering four domains: responsive caregiving, early learning opportunities, safety and security, and supportive caregiver well-being. Statistical analyses, including t-tests and one-way ANOVA, were performed. Results: Overall maternal knowledge of nurturing care was high, with a mean score of 25.15 (SD = 4.72). Factors significantly associated with higher knowledge included having male children (p = 0.017), being aged 30-34 years (p = 0.035), possessing higher education levels (p = 0.002), and prior exposure to nurturing care information (p <0.001). Family income significantly influenced knowledge in the domain of early learning opportunities (p = 0.006), though not in other areas. Conclusion: Maternal knowledge of nutrition-focused nurturing care was influenced by child gender, maternal age, education, income, and prior exposure to nurturing care information. These findings emphasize the importance of focused educational interventions in nursing practice to enhance maternal knowledge. Addressing these factors can help align nursing strategies better to support the healthy growth and development of children.
