Abstract

Pineapple plantation area in Tangkit Baru Village of Jambi Province is 1,200 ha with 10,101 tons/year of production and the pineapple peel waste is estimated at 2,727 tons/year. That pineapple peel can be used as a medium for nata de pina production. The study was to obtain the optimum natural starter and yield of nata de pina from pineapple peel of Tangkit variety. Completely randomized design (CRD) study of various carbon source (2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4%) and nitrogen source (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5%) with treatment variation of starter concentration (5; 10; 15; 20; 25%), and varous acetic acid (0, 0,75%). This study produced five types of ready-to-use natural starters namely starter de tangkit 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The population of bacteria for starter de tangkit 1–5 around 7.0×106 until 1.6×108 CFU/mL and reference starter (Hanum merk) of 7.6×107 CFU/mL. The starter de tangkit 1 was chosen because it produces the optimum yield value and could be used in coconut media. At a starter concentration of 10%, the treatment with 0.75% acetic acid, 2.50% sugar, and 0.5% sprout extract produced the highest yield of 57.52%, while without acetic acid only 19.36% (the highest yield was only 30,76%). Linear equation to optimum produce of nata de pina yield: Y = 55.4148–1.24 X1+0.6392 X2 (Y yield, X1 sugar, X2 sprout extract). The variation of 25% starter concentration showed an increase in yield value to 66%. Data analysis using two-way ANOVA showed carbon and nitrogen sources did not have a significant effect on nata de pina yield. The moisture content, fiber, and organoleptic were not significantly different from reference nata de coco (SNI 01-4317-1996), but not in the color. Nata de pina had brown color because made from the extracts pineapple peel of the Tangkit variety. Keywords: acetic acid, nata de pina, pineapple peel, starter de tangkit

Abstract

In recent years, research has been directed towards improving the thermophysical properties of single-component nanofluids. Therefore, hybrid or composite nanofluids are developed to improve heat transfer performance. The thermophysical properties of ZrO2-SiO2 nanoparticles suspended in a mixture of water (W) and ethylene glycol (EG) with vol 60:40 or Green Nanofluids for various volume concentrations were investigated. Experiments were performed for volume concentrations of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3% of green nanofluids at 50, 60, 70, and 80°C. Measurements of thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity are performed at temperatures ranging from 50-80°C. The highest thermal conductivity of the green nanofluids is obtained at a concentration of 0.3%, and the maximum increase is up to 37.5% higher than the base fluid (EG/W). Meanwhile, evidence from the dynamic viscosity of green nanofluids is affected by concentration and temperature. Furthermore, the green nanofluids behave as a Newtonian fluid in a volume concentration of 0.1-0.3%. In conclusion, the combination of increased thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity at a concentration of 0.3% has optimal conditions, which has more advantages for heat transfer than at other concentrations.

Abstract

Indonesia as an agricultural country, produces many agricultural products. In addition to agricultural products, agricultural waste is also generated throughout the year. This agricultural waste is still underutilized. One of the efforts to utilize agricultural waste is to process agricultural waste into bioadsorbent. This study aims to study the effect of the mass of bioadsorbent from agricultural waste, namely corn husks on reducing levels of free fatty acids (FFA), peroxide value (PV) and color in crude palm oil (CPO). Clean corn husks are then mashed, after which it is reacted with NaOH to remove the lignin content and neutralized with HCl, so that a bioadsorbent is obtained. Crude palm oil is heated to 80 oC, then mixed with 2 to 10 grams of bioadsorbent according to the variables used. The mixture was stirred at 500 rpm for one hour, and the temperature was maintained at 80 oC. After the adsorption process is complete, the mixture is filtered using a vacuum pump and the filtrate is taken. The filtrate obtained was analyzed for free fatty acid content, peroxide value and color. The research resulted in the more mass of bioadsorbent used, the greater the decrease in free fatty acid levels, peroxide value and color. Using 10 g of bioadsorbent can reduce FFA levels by 41.29%, reduce PV values by 54.96% and reduce color absorbance by 29.06%.

Abstract

In the last few years, much research has focused on the stability and improvement of the thermo-physical properties of single-component nanofluids. Some studies have not made many improvements to the stability and thermophysical properties of various types of green nanofluids from several variations of nanoparticles. Green nanofluids must be developed to improve heat transfer performance from their stability and thermal conductivity factors. Stability and thermal conductivity of Nano-silicate suspended in a base mixture of water /ethylene glycol with the ratio of 60:40, different volume concentrations were investigated. The experiments carried out were the stability of the green nanofluids investigated for volume concentrations of 0.1~0.3% and temperature conditions from 30 to 70°C for thermal conductivity measurement using TEMPOS Thermal Properties Analyzer. The experimental results showed that the stability analysis of the green nanofluids prepared by the UV-Vis method was stable up to 30 days after preparation with a sonication time of 1 hour with a ratio of 70-80%. The evaluation of the zeta potential for green nanofluids obtained a value of 33.57 mV with a moderate stability classification. The highest thermal conductivity for the green nanofluids was obtained at 0.3%, and the maximum increase was 17% higher than that of the base liquid (W/EG). Green nanofluids with a concentration of 0.1% gave the lowest effective thermal conductivity of 1.09 time at 70°C.

Abstract

Plastic is one of the items widely used by the world's population, including in industry. Apart from being cheaper, plastic also has the advantage of being waterproof and having good strength to withstand the load carried. However, plastic has weaknesses in the decomposition process and can cause environmental pollution. Corn has a high percentage of starch content and is easy to cultivate in Indonesia, so corn has the potential to become one of the raw materials used in making bioplastics to reduce the plastic waste produced. This research aims to determine the effect of adding CaCOᴣ and glycerol fillers in synthesizing bioplastics from corn starch. The method applied in this research is pouring the solution. Based on research, the reaction to make bioplastic from corn starch with CaCO3 filler and glycerol is an esterification reaction. The higher the CaCO₃ content in bioplastics, the smaller the percent elongation value produced, the tensile strength properties will decrease, and this will result in the %w loss value decreasing. The low tensile strength is due to the presence of empty holes in the bioplastic product. Meanwhile, more glycerol will cause an increase in the percent elongation value, a decrease in tensile strength, and easy degradation. The bioplastic that has specification close to SNI standards was obtained using 5 ml of glycerol and 2 grams of CaCO₃ for 100 g of corn starch.

Abstract

especially in cosmetics. The aloe plant that is cultivated in Indonesia to supply this industry is Aloe chinensis Baker. This research is to determine the effects of Aloe vera gel extract on the effectiveness of sunscreen lotion. The steps taken included Aloe vera gel extraction, flavonoid absorption test, sun protection factor (SPF) value measurement, pH test, viscosity test, homogeneity test, and organoleptic evaluation. The extract was added to the base sunscreen formulation at five different concentrations. UV-Vis spectrophotometry at 290 – 320 nm was performed on the preparations to determine their SPF values. The highest SPF value of 10.21 was found in the preparation containing 20% Aloe vera gel extract. This value falls within the national industrial standard for sunscreen SPF value range of 2 – 60. The research showed that a higher concentration of Aloe vera gel extract increased the pH, with the most elevated pH at 7.0 for the preparation containing 20% Aloe gel vera extract. This value also falls within the national pH standard for sunscreen of 4.5 – 8.0. The higher concentration of Aloe vera gel extract also increased the dispersive amount of the sunscreen preparation, with the highest value of 5 cm resulting from 20% Aloe vera gel extract addition. This research showed that the increased addition of Aloe vera gel extract resulted in higher SPF value.
