Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to explore the impact of money politics on voting behavior, compliance and voter loyalty in Indonesia using literature study and desk research methods. Money politics, which involves providing material incentives to voters, has become a widespread and influential phenomenon in the electoral system in Indonesia. This study analyzes various literature and secondary data to understand how money politics influences voters' preferences, their level of compliance with candidates who provide incentives, and their loyalty to political parties or candidates. The research results show that money politics has a significant influence on voting behavior, where voters who receive incentives tend to choose candidates or parties that provide these incentives. However, this influence is often temporary and does not guarantee long-term loyalty. Voter loyalty to candidates who provide incentives is also influenced by economic motivations, and voter loyalty tends to weaken due to the practice of money politics, causing them to more easily change their support in the next election if there is a more profitable offer. To reduce the negative impact of money politics, this research recommends increasing political education, stricter law enforcement, and strengthening electoral institutions. A holistic approach involving the government, electoral institutions, civil society organizations and the wider community is needed to overcome this problem and strengthen democracy in Indonesia. This research provides in-depth insight into the phenomenon of money politics and offers recommendations for improving the quality of elections in Indonesia. Keywords:money politics, voting behavior, voter compliance, voter loyalty,

Abstract

The mechanism of interim replacement of parliamentarians constitutes a critical pillar of democratic representation, serving not only to ensure administrative continuity but also to reveal the extent of political parties’ influence over vacated legislative seats.  This study conducts a cross-country comparative analysis of the role of political parties in interim replacement mechanisms (IRP)  across five democracies: Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and the United States. Using a qualitative comparative  approach complemented by a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of 58 scholarly works, the research examines the legal frameworks, institutional arrangements, and accountability dimensions that shape IRP. Findings demonstrate that in Indonesia and the Philippines, party elites wield dominant authority under the open-list system, frequently marginalising constituent participation and consolidating internal party power. In Malaysia and Singapore, although by-elections are formally prescribed, institutional loopholes and discretionary powers enable parties or governments to delay or circumvent these mechanisms, thereby compromising electoral legitimacy. Conversely, the United States exhibits higher levels of public participation through mandated special elections, with temporary gubernatorial appointments remaining tightly constrained. These variations underscore that the influence of political parties in IRP is highly contingent on each country’s institutional design, electoral rules, and governance norms. The study highlights the normative and practical implications of these arrangements and advocates democratic reforms that enhance transparency, institutional checks, and participatory safeguards, particularly in systems where parties retain near-absolute control. By linking institutional design to representative accountability, the article provides actionable insights for policymakers, scholars, and democracy advocates striving to foster more inclusive, transparent, and resilient legislative governance.

Abstract

The increasing digitization of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in e-commerce brings critical challenges in protecting customer data. Despite the widespread use of encrypted communication protocols such as HTTPS and TLS for secure data transmission, many MSMEs still fail to implement encryption at the data storage level. This means that once the data reaches the server, it is often stored in unencrypted form within the database. This study implemented AES-128 encryption at the field-level in a Laravel-based e-commerce system to protect MSME customer data. The encryption was applied to sensitive data fields and tested through black-box testing and benchmark analysis. A dataset of 10,000 records was used to compare performance between plaintext and encrypted operations. Results showed an average encryption overhead of 0.0409 seconds, indicating minimal impact on performance. The encryption-decryption process consistently returned correct outputs across all trials. This solution offers an affordable and scalable encryption model for MSMEs, enhancing customer data security without relying on external tools or infrastructure.
