Abstract

Indonesia is inhabited by people who are predominantly Muslim. The month of Ramadan is a month that Muslims look forward to. Indonesian people, especially in East Java and West Sumatra, have a tradition of welcoming the month of Ramadan, namely the megengan tradition and the malamang tradition. Megengan in East Java is done by praying together and distributing food, especially apem cakes, while malamang is done by making lemang together. The megengan and malamang traditions are a form of Indonesian people's joy in welcoming Ramadan, and these traditions reflect cultural and Islamic values. The purpose of this paper is to compare megengan and malamang as a form of tradition to welcome the holy month of Ramadan. The method used is a qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of literature study. The theory used is functionalism, developed by Bronislaw Malinowski and A.R. Radcliffe-Brown. As a result, these two traditions are traditions carried out by the community as a form of welcoming the arrival of the month of Ramadan, which is carried out collectively by the community and contains Islamic values such as friendship, cooperation, and togetherness. Both traditions are carried out by every element of society, from children to the elderly.

Abstract

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is a vital plantation crop, serving as a raw material for various industries, including sugar, bioethanol, amino acids, and food ingredients. Therefore, the advancement of technologies aimed at increasing productivity and fertilization efficiency in sugarcane cultivation has become a priority. Bio-silicic acid (BioSilAc) is a technology that can optimize the cultivation process. This study evaluated the effectiveness of water and fertilizer usage in plant cane (PC) and ratoon cane (RC) during low rainfall by applying BioSilAc and its impact on sugarcane productivity. This research utilized a randomized block design with three treatments (P1: 100% NPK; P2: 100% NPK + BioSilAc; and P3: 75% NPK + BioSilAc) replicated three times. Observed variables included soil and leaf nutrient levels, sugarcane growth, and productivity. Daily and potential water consumption was measured in real-time using a sap flow meter to calculate water use efficiency for P1 (control) and P2, representing the BioSilAc application. The P3 treatment (75% NPK + BioSilAc) demonstrated the highest effectiveness in terms of fertilization efficiency and productivity, resulting in notable increases in crop yield and crystal sugar. The PC category saw increases of 13.5% and 12.4%, while the RC category experienced gains of 22.82% and 25.81%, respectively. Furthermore, water use efficiency was recorded at 22.55% for the PC category and 13.72% for the RC category. Our findings suggest that the application of BioSilAc not only increase the productivity of sugarcane but also improves both fertilizer and water use efficiency.

Abstract

Amphiphilic chitosan derivatives bearing sulfate and anisaldehyde imine (anisimine) groups were successfully synthesized and characterized for potential applications as functional biomaterials. The synthesis involved two key steps: (1) sulfation of chitosan using chlorosulfonic acid to introduce O-sulfate groups, and (2) Schiff base formation via reaction with p-anisaldehyde to generate N-anisimine functionalities. Structural modifications were confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, which showed characteristic absorption bands at ~1250 cm-¹ and ~820 cm-¹ corresponding to O=S=O stretching of sulfate, and a C=N stretch at ~1640 cm-¹ indicating imine formation. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectra further verified the successful attachment of aromatic protons from p-anisaldehyde and the disappearance of primary amine peaks, confirming imination. The amphiphilic behavior and micelle-forming ability of the N-anisimine-O-sulfated (NAOS) chitosan were evaluated using pyrene as a hydrophobic fluorescent probe for determining the critical micelle concentration (CMC), which was found to be 0.012 mg/mL. The observed low CMC value indicates strong self-assembly capability in aqueous media. These results suggest that NAOS chitosan possesses promising structural and surface-active properties suitable for advanced applications in drug delivery and cosmetic formulations.
