Abstract

Mangupa is a traditional Mandailing ritual practice imbued with profound spiritual and social dimensions, serving as a form of transcendental communication that connects individuals to their community and a higher spiritual \realm. In the context of contemporary mental health services, this practice encounters complex dynamics. This study adopts a phenomenological approach to explore the subjective experiences of indigenous practitioners, mental health professionals, and patients in interpreting Mangupa as part of the psychosocial recovery process. The findings reveal that this ritual fosters therapeutic trust, provides emotional support, and offers a meaningful space for spiritual recovery. However, the integration of Mangupa into clinical settings is often constrained by administrative limitations and dominant biomedical standards. This study emphasizes the importance of fostering dialogical spaces between cultural practicesand modern medical approaches not to preserve traditional essence per se, but to generate new, ontextually dynamic meanings. Accordingly, the encounter between these two paradigms illustrates the potential for a transformative shift toward a more inclusive, participatory, and culturally grounded mental health service.

Abstract

Social media consistently generates intriguing phenomena worthy of discussion. One particularly widespread but seldom-studied phenomenon is Call Out Culture. Call Out Culture involves individuals or groups expressing their frustration and disappointment with specific events by calling out or satirizing those they perceive as responsible through social media platforms. This research aims to explore how Generation Z in Medan City interprets the phenomenon of Call Out Culture on Instagram. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method utilizing a snowball sampling technique, where the initially identified informant assists in recruiting subsequent participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and content analysis of relevant Instagram posts. The findings indicate that Generation Z in Medan City views Call Out Culture on Instagram as a means to advocate for social change and increase awareness of critical issues such as social injustice, human rights, and environmental concerns. However, they also recognize the necessity of a balanced approach in delivering criticism to avoid exacerbating conflicts. Generation Z demonstrated an awareness of the potential negative impacts of Call Out Culture, such as cyberbullying and social polarization, and stressed the importance of responsible use of social media as a tool for advocacy.

Abstract

UMKM Surya Agung Percussion, located in Kaliwot Hamlet, RT 18, RW 07, Bungah Village, Bungah District, Gresik, is a micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise (UMKM) that produces percussion instruments such as tambourines. The products manufactured by UMKM Surya Agung Percussion include tambourines, hadrahs, marawis, and darbukas. The flagship product of this UMKM is the tambourine. In the production process, UMKM Surya Agung Percussion has a tambourine smoothing machine with a capacity of 50 pieces per day. However, the capacity of the machine is unable to meet the demand for tambourines, which can reach up to 400 pieces per week. Therefore, a study is conducted to observe this phenomenon with the aim of designing a tambourine smoothing tool to increase the production capacity of tambourines and minimize the smoothing process time. The tool is redesigned taking into account the anthropometric aspects of the workers to make it more ergonomic and produce a higher output than before to meet the fluctuating demand for tambourines.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of the meaning of da'wah in digital painting artworks published through the Instagram account @_zukkk using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. This study is motivated by the transformation of da'wah in the digital era, where religious messages are increasingly conveyed through visual media that align with the communication characteristics of the millennial and Generation Z generations. This study uses a qualitative approach with a semiotic analysis method that maps meaning at three levels, namely denotation, connotation, and myth. The research data is in the form of uploaded digital artworks that display a representation of a Muslim performing a bowing movement under a large tree, with the surrounding natural elements depicted as bowing as well. The results show that at the denotative level, the artwork represents the practice of prayer as a form of ritual obedience. At the connotative level, the visualization builds the meaning of spiritual harmony between humans and nature in submission to Allah. Meanwhile, at the mythical level, this artwork constructs an ideological narrative about the cosmological submission of the entire universe to the Creator. This study concludes that digital painting serves not only as an aesthetic expression but also as an effective and contextual visual da'wah medium in the social media era. These findings contribute to the development of digital da'wah communication studies by emphasizing the role of visual art as an adaptive, reflective, and relevant da'wah strategy within contemporary visual culture.
