Abstract

This research aims to describe: (1) the integration of local wisdom in Indonesian learning planning at UPT SDN 21 Bangkala, Jeneponto Regency, (2) the implementation of local wisdom in the implementation of Indonesian language learning, and (3) the supporting and inhibiting factors in the integration of local wisdom in the learning. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive type of research. The research subjects include classroom teachers and students, while data collection techniques are carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data is analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. The results of the study show that: (1) at the planning stage, teachers have integrated elements of local wisdom through the selection of materials, learning objectives, and the preparation of activities relevant to regional culture, although it is still not completely systematic. (2) In the implementation stage, teachers apply local wisdom through the use of text examples, local folklore, contextual learning media, and discussions that raise students' cultural experiences. Students also show enthusiasm and active involvement when material is associated with the local culture. (3) Supporting factors for the integration of local wisdom include the availability of cultural resources in the surrounding environment, school support, and the proximity of students to the cultural context. The inhibiting factors include the limitation of teaching materials that contain local wisdom, the lack of teacher training, and the lack of optimal use of culture-based learning media. This study concludes that the integration of local wisdom in Indonesian learning at UPT SDN 21 Bangkala has been implemented, but it still needs to be strengthened in the aspects of planning and providing teaching materials so that the implementation of learning based on local wisdom can take place more optimally.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low short story writing skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 22 Kalukue. The problems identified included students’ difficulties in developing ideas into coherent and meaningful stories, as well as the use of conventional teaching methods that did not sufficiently encourage creativity. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The subjects of the study consisted of 20 fifth-grade students. Data were collected through observation, short story writing tests, and documentation. The findings revealed a significant improvement from one cycle to the next. In Cycle I, the learning mastery level reached only 40%, with the average score not yet meeting the Minimum Learning Achievement Criteria (KKTP). After improvements were implemented in Cycle II, the mastery percentage increased to 95%. The 55% increase indicates that the Lipirtup strategy (See, Choose, Reflect, Express, and Publish) based on inspirational film media was effective in enhancing students’ motivation, active participation, and ability to compose short stories systematically, coherently, and creatively.

Abstract

General Background: Reading comprehension is a fundamental literacy skill in elementary education, yet students’ abilities remain relatively low due to limited engaging learning media. Specific Background: Classroom practices are still dominated by conventional textbooks, resulting in low student motivation and difficulties in understanding texts, identifying main ideas, and summarizing content. Knowledge Gap: The integration of digital-based Big Book media using Canva to support reading comprehension skills in elementary students remains limited and requires empirical validation. Aims: This study aims to develop a Canva-based Big Book prototype and evaluate its validity, practicality, and effectiveness in improving reading comprehension skills of third-grade elementary students. Results: The developed media achieved very high validity (average 97%), demonstrated strong practicality through learning implementation (95.83%) and positive student responses (96–97%), and showed improved student performance from sufficient to good categories, particularly in identifying main ideas, answering questions, and summarizing texts. Novelty: This study introduces a Canva-based Big Book integrating visual design, contextual narratives, and digital access features aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum and student characteristics. Implications: The findings indicate that Canva-based Big Book media provides a feasible and practical solution to support engaging, interactive, and meaningful literacy learning in elementary classrooms. Highlights• High validation scores confirm strong alignment between design and learning content• Positive learner feedback indicates strong engagement during reading activities• Improved student ability in identifying ideas, answering questions, and summarizing texts KeywordsBig Book; Canva; Reading Comprehension; Elementary Education; Learning Media
