Abstract

Homeira Qaderi’s memoir, Dancing in the Mosque (2020), portrays how cultural norms construct gender expectations and perpetuate stereotypes. Using a dual narrative structure that intertwines Shah Pesar’s magical adventures with Qaderi’s poignant reflections illustrates how Qaderi skillfully employs focalization to shed light on the cultural limitations imposed on Afghan women, blending realistic storytelling elements. This study utilizes Bal’s theory of focalization alongside Genette’s concept of zero focalization to analyze the narrative shift from an omniscient narrator to a first-person perspective. By applying these theories, we examine how the shift in perspective highlights emotional intricacies and sharp feminist critique, while also revealing the narrative control and the lens through which the characters’ experiences are portrayed. We investigate the marginalization of women through the issues of constrained mobility, loss of identity, and legal disenfranchisement. By centering on Qaderi’s perspective, the text critiques societal and legal structures that diminish women’s value while foregrounding their struggle for agency and self-definition in a patriarchal society. This study underscores the broader ramifications of gender narratives in Afghanistan, highlighting the resilience of women as they resist cultural suppression.

Abstract

Tahta untuk Rakyat Throne for the People, which is the principle that the highly respected Hamengkubuwono IX lived by as a democratic and nationalist King of Kesultanan Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, embodies the concept of the people, by the people, for the people. Under his rule, Kesultanan Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat (Yogyakarta Sultanate in Indonesia) was committed to placing the people first. Nevertheless, the book Menanam adalah Melawan, or Planting is Resisting, challenges the very principle and questions the commitment of the present-day sultanate. The article explores the activist book, which contains the notes of an activist farmer who reflected on and wrote about his journeys and experiences as a farmer-turned-activist after the village where he farmed was claimed by the authorities, including the sultanate, and was planned to be made into a mining site. Faircloughs sociocultural linguistics frames the analysis, and more specifically through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The results indicate that at the micro level, Widodos writing uses emotive and technical language to construct a collective identity of marginalized farmers, opposing powerful entities like the sultanate and corporations. At the meso-level, the text challenges dominant power structures and neoliberal policies, advocating for social justice and a responsive monarchy, while emphasizing the need for transparency and genuine community partnership. The article indicates that the concern about the marginalized should take into account non-mainstream texts such as those produced by the marginalized so that social injustice can be minimized.

Abstract

(Title: Sexuality and Relation Man's and Woman's in the Poem "Persetubuhan Bumi" by Goenawan Mohamad). Inequality between woman and man in asexual relationship appear many time in Indonesia's poetry. Women are often being put in a second position even though they have the same competence and power with men. It also happens in relationship on daily activities, both at public space or at home. Abstract

(Title: Indonesian Identity in Drama's Nyanyi Sunyi Revolusi by Amir Hamzah). This paper will examine the beginning period of Indonesia which is represented in the drama. The past events which occurred more than seventy years ago are now retold, not only to re-establish who Amir Hamzah was, but also to explain the Indonesian identity and the roles he played in building a nationality. Amir Hamzah, one of the great authors of Indonesia who also contributed in formulating the archipelago as Indonesia, who advocated Malay language as the language of unity of Indonesia, should be killed by several young men because he was a sultan's nephew. Those young men considered the Sultans and their families as Dutch henchmen. The tragic story of Amir Hamzah's life was staged in a drama titled "Nyanyi Sunyi Revolusi" (trans. The Quiet Singing of Revolution)which with the scripts was written by Ahda Imran. Socio-political conditions give rise to the need to define "˜self'. This requires serious rethinking. This drama also illustrates the identity of Indonesia after independence. In other words, literature describes history from a different view. By using the principle of New Historicism, this paper will explain the complex problem that occurred in Indonesia after independence until the 50s. Besides, it also will describe "Indonesian Identity" in the drama "Nyanyi Sunyi Revolusi". In this context, Indonesian literary texts which reflect Indonesian history can be positioned as historical reading from a different version. Keywords: identity, Indonesian, revolution, new historicism.

Abstract

Abstract

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah (2013) presents a narrative that shifts between different temporalities and spaces, a movement that is particularly experienced by its main character, Ifemelu, as she navigates through her Nigerian, American, and her newly found black identity. Similarly, the novel’s narrative attempts to showcase other postcolonial African women like Ifemelu, as well as their ambiguous identities and othered representations. Through this article, we examine the workings of Ifemelu’s narration as it shifts from one space to another, specifically from Nigeria to America and vice versa, through a narratological method. We will then focus on how these specific spaces occupied by Ifemelu and other African women, or what Ogundipe-Leslie calls “women’s spaces and modes, " work with the bodily experiences of the women and the black Atlantic world at large. Throughout the novel, the hair salon is the women’s space that the narration keeps returning to, serving as a bridge between the story’s past and present. However, a more constant form of women’s spaces also occurs through the narrative body itself, specifically through the narrative form of online blogs that showcase Ifemelu’s attempt to find familiarities with other black people of the diaspora. From this article’s analysis, we argue that the hair salon and the narration of the online blogs, as “micro-African” spaces, serve as mediums to reclaim and re-write the contingent and negotiated identities of postcolonial African in the new black Atlantic world.

Abstract

In virtual idol fandoms, fans often follow shared norms that shape how they interact with one another. This research draws on fandom, norms, and negotiation theories to explore how such norms emerge and are negotiated within the Plli fandom on social media X, focusing on the figure of “Terra Plave” as the controlling presence behind Plave’s virtual idol avatar. Based on data from phenomenological interviews with four Indonesian fans, the study identifies two central aspects of these norms: the types of accounts fans use and their responses to provocative posts and doxxing. The findings suggest that the norms surrounding Terra Plave reflect an ongoing process of negotiation among fans, aimed at resolving internal conflicts triggered by official statements from Plave’s label.
