Abstract

The impact of the converter kit type on the performance of diesel engines using biodiesel and LPG fuel has been explored. Converter kits play a vital role in transforming the fuel supply system, and experiments have been conducted to assess their influence on various engine performance parameters. The findings of the study indicate that the selection of a converter kit significantly affects the performance of dual-fuel diesel engines (biodiesel and LPG). Gas Heater converter kits, including type 1, type 2, and type 3 variations, were scrutinized in this research. Testing revealed variations in LPG-Biodiesel fuel mixing ratios depending on the type of converter kit employed. For instance, Gas Heater type 3 achieves the highest value with a mixing ratio of 14.4. Furthermore, the performance of the engine in terms of power and torque is also impacted by the type of converter kit utilized. Gas Heater type 1 exhibits peak performance, with power reaching 5.4 kW and torque measuring 34.81 Nm. Despite the operational costs of dual-fuel diesel engines tending to be higher than those using pure biodiesel, the research concludes that the choice of the converter kit type can have a substantial effect on engine performance, particularly regarding fuel efficiency.

Abstract

Thixoforming improves material properties better than conventional methods through the formation of non-dendritic or rounded structures. This study aimed to optimize the mechanical properties of Al 6061/SiC composites by adding Mg as a wetting agent through stir casting, thixoforming, and artificial aging processes. The holding time during the artificial aging process was varied to investigate its effect on microstructure, hardness, and impact toughness. SEM analysis revealed a more uniform distribution of SiC particles with increasing holding time, indicating the effective formation of Mg2Si precipitates. The maximum hardness of 48.5 HRB and the highest impact toughness of 0.022 J/mm² were obtained at the longest holding time of 3 hours. This indicates that the formation of homogeneous Mg2Si precipitates during the artificial aging process significantly contributed to the improvement of the composite's mechanical properties.

Abstract

Karangantu Port, located in Banten Province, plays a strategic role in supporting capture fisheries activities. However, fishing vessels operating in this port often face hydrodynamic resistance issues that affect operational efficiency. This study aims to analyze the influence of vessel speed and draft on the total resistance experienced by fishing boats. A 3D hull model was developed using SolidWorks and simulated using Maxsurf. Speed variations ranged from 5 to 12 knots, with four draft levels tested: 0.5 m, 0.7 m, 0.9 m, and 1.1 m. The results show that total resistance increases significantly with speed, particularly due to the dominance of wave-making resistance at speeds above 8 knots. Deeper drafts also lead to higher frictional resistance, caused by the increased wetted surface area. The optimal operational speed for maintaining fuel efficiency is in the range of 6 to 9 knots, with a balanced draft setting to ensure vessel stability without excessive resistance. These findings are expected to contribute to more efficient design and operation of fishing vessels at Karangantu Port.

Abstract

Clean and healthy air are major topics around the globe. It is because poor air quality hurts human health and is even responsible for the deaths of millions of people. This work develops exhaust pipes containing filters to reduce the pollutants emitted by motorcycles. There are three pollutant concentrations measured here: CO2, CO, and HC. The measurements were taken before and after the filter system so that the pollutant reduction could be calculated.  The maximum pollutant reduction of the filter system: 6.1 % of CO2, 8.0 % of CO, and 651.0 ppm of HC. The primary mechanism of this filter is the physical trapping of pollutants. When the gas flows through the exhaust pipe, the pollutants in the stream are attached to the filter due to direct contact. This change can be visually observed in the filter color, which darkens after use in the exhaust pipe. However, a limitation of this work is its short-term experiment, which lasted only five minutes, indicating a key area for future research. It is also necessary to have alternative filters that are sustainable and can work properly in high-temperature conditions.

Abstract

Agriculture waste-based materials have considerable potential as wood-based particleboard alternatives. It has been produced abundantly from nature and considers an eco-friendly material. One of the enormous resources is the paddy by-product, rice straw (about 500 million tonnes per year worldwide). In this work, the mechanical properties of rice straw-based particleboard are predicted easily and quickly using the sessile drop method.  Rice straw was crushed into 2-5 mm diameter powder-like materials, and corn starch was used as the binder. The rice straw particleboard was formed under a hot press machine (5 MPa, 180°C and 120 minutes). Conventionally, the sample mechanical property was tested through Universal Testing Machine (UTM). Unfortunately, the process is costly and difficult to access. It is necessary to have a rapid and low-cost presumption of the mechanical particleboard properties toward more efficient manufacturing. This work proposes a simple sessile drop method to indicate particleboard mechanical properties. Multiple linear regression was performed to see the correlation between sessile drop and UTM testing. It was found statistically that the sessile drop method could be used as an early prediction of particleboard mechanical properties.

Abstract

A leakage failure occurred in a low-pressure evaporator tube of a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) in a combined cycle power plant. The failed tube, manufactured from ST 37.8 CL1 steel, was investigated to determine the root cause of failure. The analysis included visual inspection, metallographic examination, and hardness testing. Visual observation revealed localized leakage regions associated with material degradation. Metallographic analysis showed a ferrite–pearlite microstructure with pronounced pearlite growth and the presence of micro-cavities concentrated along grain boundaries. Hardness measurements indicated that the failed tube exhibited higher hardness values (average 83.3 HRB) compared to unused material (average 76.6 HRB), reflecting microstructural evolution during service. The tube operated at approximately 143.8 °C under continuous internal pressure. Long-term exposure to these conditions promoted creep damage, characterized by the nucleation of micro-cavities at ferrite–pearlite interfaces. Progressive cavity growth and coalescence reduced ductility and facilitated crack initiation, ultimately leading to leakage. The findings demonstrate that creep-induced cavity formation associated with pearlite growth was the primary failure mechanism of the low-pressure evaporator tube.

Abstract

This is This study explores the Influence of Steam-to-Biomass Ratio on Syngas Yield and Composition in the Induction Heating Gasification of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). The aim was to investigate how varying the steam-to-biomass ratio (SBR) affects the yield and composition of syngas during MSW gasification using induction heating. The objectives were twofold: first, to determine the optimal SBR that maximizes hydrogen (H₂) produc-tion in syngas, and second, to analyze the impacts on other syngas compo-nents such as carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and methane (CH₄). Experimental tests were conducted using an updraft reactor with an induction heating system, maintaining a constant MSW feed rate while ad-justing SBR from 0.56 to 2.09. Gas chromatography was employed to ana-lyze syngas composition, focusing on H₂, CO, CO₂, and CH₄. Key findings indicate that increasing SBR enhances hydrogen production significantly. At an optimal SBR of 2.09, hydrogen content peaked at 36.203%, demonstrat-ing the efficacy of steam in promoting gasification efficiency. Concurrently, CO concentrations decreased with higher SBR values due to intensified wa-ter-gas shift reactions. The study also highlighted challenges related to by-product formation, particularly tar and char residues. Tar production peaked at 9.68 grams under low SBR conditions (0.56), emphasizing the critical role of precise steam control in minimizing tar contamination. Char formation averaged 4 grams across SBR variations, influenced by biomass characteris-tics and reactor cleanliness. These findings contribute to advancing sustaina-ble waste-to-energy practices by optimizing gasification parameters tailored to local MSW compositions. Future research should focus on refining gasifi-cation technologies and conducting comprehensive techno-economic as-sessments to evaluate scalability and cost-effectiveness in diverse environ-mental settings.
