Abstract

Plastic waste is an environmental problem that has a serious impact on ecosystemsand human health. The low awareness of elementary school students towardsplastic waste management shows the importance of environmental education froman early age. This study aims to analyze the influence of plastic waste hazardeducation on the knowledge and attitudes of SDN Serang 17 students. The studyused a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental pre-test post-test controlgroup design. The research subjects consisted of students of SDN Serang 17 whowere divided into experimental groups and control groups. The research instrumentsare in the form of knowledge questionnaires and attitude questionnaires that havebeen validated. The experimental group was given education on the dangers ofplastic waste through interactive learning, while the control group followed the usuallearning. The results showed a significant increase in students' knowledge andattitudes in the experimental group compared to the control group. Thus, educationon the dangers of plastic waste is effective in increasing understanding and formingattitudes of caring for the environment in elementary school students.

Abstract

Environmental problems caused by plastic waste have become a serious challenge in achieving sustainable development, including in the school environment. One strategic effort to address this issue is by instilling environmental care values from an early age through educational programs. This study aims to analyze the internalization of environmental care values among elementary school students through plastic waste management based on the School Waste Bank program. The research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. Data were collected using a literature study by reviewing and analyzing various relevant Indonesian scientific journals, books, and research reports related to environmental education, character education, and school waste bank implementation. The results of the study indicate that the School Waste Bank program plays an effective role in internalizing students’ environmental care values through three interconnected domains: cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. Cognitively, students gain an understanding of the environmental impacts of plastic waste and the importance of waste management. Affectively, the program fosters attitudes of responsibility, discipline, and empathy toward the environment. Psychomotorically, students develop practical skills and habitual behaviors in sorting, recycling, and reusing plastic waste. Furthermore, the School Waste Bank contributes to creating a sustainable school culture that supports character education. Therefore, plastic waste management based on the School Waste Bank can serve as an effective educational medium in shaping environmentally responsible character among elementary school students.

Abstract

Waste management issues represent a serious challenge in Indonesia, exacerbated by population growth, urbanization, and the suboptimal level of community participation in waste segregation and policy implementation. In this context, early education at the elementary school level is recognized as a fundamental instrument for instilling awareness and responsible habits related to waste management. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using segregated waste bins, particularly those modified with sound or visual features, in improving students’ waste disposal accuracy at SDN Ciherang. This approach is based on the concept that segregated waste bins can function as constant pedagogical tools by providing visual cues and feedback that encourage positive behavioral change. This study employed a quasi-experimental design using a Nonequivalent Control Group Pretest–Posttest approach involving two groups of students at SDN Ciherang. Quantitative data were collected through behavioral observations and waste audits to measure segregation accuracy, while qualitative data were obtained through questionnaires and interviews to understand students’ perceptions and motivations. The hypothetical results indicate a significant increase in waste segregation accuracy in the experimental group using the modified waste bins, from 45.2% to 88.5%, whereas the control group showed no significant change. The sound and visual features of the waste bins hypothetically contributed to increased student enthusiasm and understanding, as well as positive changes in waste segregation behavior. It is concluded that the use of segregated waste bins modified with sound or visual features is hypothetically highly effective in improving proper waste disposal and fostering environmental awareness among elementary school students. These findings suggest that interactive infrastructure design can serve as an important component of a comprehensive environmental education strategy.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that remains prevalent among elementary school children and can have long-term impacts on health, learning capacity, and overall human resource quality. Environmental factors, particularly sanitation conditions and access to clean water, play a crucial role in supporting optimal child growth and development. This study aimed to analyze the influence of environmental sanitation and access to clean water on the occurrence of stunting among elementary school students. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was employed in this study. The research participants consisted of 60 elementary school students from SDN Citerep. Stunting status was determined through anthropometric measurements based on height-for-age standards, while data on environmental sanitation and access to clean water were collected using structured questionnaires completed by parents or guardians. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive and analytical methods through cross-tabulation to examine the distribution and associations between variables. The results showed that the prevalence of stunting among elementary school students was 30.0%. Stunting was more frequently observed among students living in environments with poor sanitation, where 14 out of 30 students were classified as stunted, compared to those with good sanitation conditions. In addition, a higher proportion of stunting cases was found among students with inadequate access to clean water, with 13 out of 25 students experiencing stunting, compared to students who had adequate access to clean water. These findings indicate that environmental sanitation and access to clean water are influential factors associated with the occurrence of stunting among elementary school students. Therefore, stunting prevention efforts should adopt an integrated approach that not only focuses on improving nutritional intake but also emphasizes the improvement of environmental sanitation and the expansion of adequate clean water access in both household and school settings.

Abstract

The problem of waste constitutes an urgent global environmental and public health challenge, exacerbated by low levels of awareness. Therefore, the cultivation of eco-literacy and the development of environmentally caring character from an early age, particularly in elementary schools, are crucial. This study analyzes the effectiveness of Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) learning based on wasterelated issues in shaping environmentally caring character among elementary school students. Using a Mixed Methods approach with a Sequential Explanatory design, the quantitative phase employed a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test group design, which demonstrated a significant increase in students’ knowledge, attitudes, and environmentally responsible behaviors in the experimental group after the intervention. Students exhibited comprehensive understanding of waste, positive attitudes, and proactive behaviors such as waste sorting. The qualitative phase, conducted through a case study, confirmed that hands-on activities and indepth discussions facilitated conceptual understanding, fostered empathy, and internalized environmental care values. The role of teachers as facilitators and curriculum flexibility were identified as key factors for success. Thus, waste issue– based IPAS learning is highly effective in shaping environmentally caring character among elementary school students, recommending systematic integration of environmental issues and increased teacher support. The limitations of this study include issues of generalizability and the need for long-term evaluation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of integrating organic and non-organic waste sorting education with the Children Care for the Environment program in improving elementary school students' knowledge, attitudes, and behavior towards waste management. The study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design involving 200 students in grades IV, V, and VI from five public elementary schools. The educational program was implemented for four weeks through interactive lectures, visual media, simulations, and direct practice of waste sorting. The research instruments were a Likert scale questionnaire and a behavioral observation sheet that had been tested for validity and reliability. The results showed a significant increase in student knowledge, with an average score increasing from 41.7 to 78.9 (p < 0.001). Students' attitudes towards environmental awareness also increased significantly from an average score of 2.9 to 4.2 (p < 0.001). In addition, students' waste sorting behavior experienced a significant change, indicated by an increase in the percentage of students who were able to sort waste correctly from 23% to 72%. Correlation analysis showed a significant positive relationship between students' knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. This finding indicates that integrating waste sorting education with the Children Caring for the Environment program is an effective environmental education strategy in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of zero waste lifestyle education through social media on increasing knowledge, pro-environmental attitudes, and zero waste behavior adoption among Generation Z in elementary schools. The growing waste problem, especially in Indonesia, demands innovative solutions, and Generation Z, as digital natives, are identified as potential agents of change. The continuously increasing waste problem in Indonesia has severe impacts on the environment, health, and economy, exacerbated by suboptimal waste management practices and increasing waste generation due to urbanization and consumerism. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of zero waste lifestyle education via social media in enhancing knowledge, attitudes, and zero waste behavior among Generation Z students at SDN Ciputat.

Abstract

Stunting, kondisi gagal tumbuh kronis akibat malnutrisi, merupakan masalah kesehatan masyarakat yang signifikan di Indonesia dengan dampak serius pada perkembangan kognitif dan produktivitas di masa depan. Meskipun intervensi seringkali berfokus pada balita, prevalensi stunting pada anak usia sekolah dasar masih mengkhawatirkan dan kurang mendapatkan perhatian. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis determinan sosial dan lingkungan sekolah yang berkontribusi terhadap kejadian stunting pada anak usia sekolah dasar. Menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain studi cross-sectional, penelitian ini akan melibatkan pengukuran antropometri (tinggi badan, berat badan) dan pengumpulan data melalui kuesioner terstruktur mengenai karakteristik sosio-demografi, status ekonomi keluarga, pendidikan orang tua, pola asuh, sanitasi rumah tangga, akses air bersih, serta program gizi dan fasilitas sanitasi di sekolah. Analisis data akan memanfaatkan regresi logistik untuk menguji hubungan multivariat antara faktor-faktor independen dan stunting, serta uji Chi-square/alternatif. Temuan yang diharapkan akan menguraikan pengaruh multifaset dari faktor sosial (seperti status sosial ekonomi, tingkat pendidikan orang tua, dukungan komunitas) dan lingkungan sekolah (seperti sanitasi, akses air bersih, pengetahuan gizi) terhadap stunting. Selain itu, penelitian ini akan membahas peran edukasi gizi dan kader kesehatan dalam mitigasi stunting serta implikasi jangka panjang kondisi ini. Hasil penelitian diharapkan dapat memberikan pemahaman mendalam untuk pengembangan intervensi yang terarah dan holistik, yang disesuaikan dengan konteks lokal, guna mengurangi prevalensi stunting pada anak usia sekolah dasar.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that remains a serious challenge in Indonesia and significantly affects the long-term quality of human resources. Numerous studies indicate that stunting influences physical growth, cognitive development, academic achievement, and productivity in adulthood. Stunting prevention requires comprehensive, integrated, and sustainable efforts involving multiple sectors, including education. Elementary schools play a strategic role in shaping healthy behaviors, nutritional knowledge, and positive lifestyle habits from an early age through the implementation of healthy school programs. This article aims to examine the role of healthy schools in supporting the realization of a stunting-free golden generation starting from elementary education. The method employed is a literature review analyzing national and international journal articles, reports from global health organizations, and government policies related to stunting and school health. The findings indicate that the implementation of healthy school programs including nutrition education, clean and healthy lifestyle practices, regular physical activity, provision of healthy school environments, and collaboration among schools, families, and communities contributes significantly to stunting prevention. Therefore, healthy schools serve as a key foundation for developing a healthy, intelligent, and competitive future generation. In addition, the healthy school approach strengthens intersectoral collaboration between education, health services, and families in addressing nutritional problems among school-age children. Through systematic health promotion, routine monitoring, and the integration of nutrition education into learning activities, schools can function as early prevention settings that reinforce the outcomes of interventions implemented during the first 1,000 days of life

Abstract

Nutritional problems that occur in Indonesia, including stunting or malnutrition, are a major challenge that can affect the quality of life, especially in elementary school children. Stunting is a health problem that often occurs in children, which is characterized by characteristics such as height below standard (shorter than their age), weight below standard, weak body immunity, slow bone growth reflecting chronic malnutrition that occurs which has an impact on physical and cognitive development in children. These symptoms occur due to a lack of balanced nutritional fulfillment during pregnancy and after childbirth so that the fulfillment of nutritional adequacy is not enough so that breast milk given to children under 2 years old is very vulnerable to stunting.
