Abstract

Introduction: Adolescents face significant challenges in smoking cessation due to a lack of knowledge and low motivation in accessing information, methods, and management of quitting smoking. In this context, the role of peer educators and counselors, who are part of the adolescents' immediate environment, is crucial as it greatly influences their knowledge and attitudes toward quitting smoking. Objectives: This study aims to determine the effect of peer educators and counselors on adolescents' knowledge and attitudes towards smoking cessation. Methods: A quantitative pre-experimental design was employed using a one-group pre-test post-test approach. The research was conducted at a boarding school in Jambi, with a total sampling technique involving 89 male adolescent smokers aged 15-18 years. Bivariate analysis was performed using the non-parametric Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with a significance level of 5% (0.05), and multivariate analysis was conducted using ordinal regression to assess the influence of confounding factors (age, economic status, psychological state, peers, and family) on adolescents' knowledge and attitudes towards smoking cessation. Results: The results indicated significant differences in adolescents' knowledge and attitudes towards smoking cessation before and after the intervention, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). The confounding factors of age, economic status, and family had the most significant influence on adolescents' knowledge, while age, economic status, and peers had the most significant influence on adolescents' attitudes towards smoking cessation. Conclusions: Peer educators and counselors are effective in supporting adolescent efforts to quit smoking. As role models and health advocates, they help adolescents shift their focus away from smoking and increase their curiosity about smoking cessation through continuous counseling and the Upaya Berhenti Merokok (UBM) program, utilizing information media to enhance adolescent knowledge.

Abstract

Thalassemia in Indonesia is dominated by teens. Thalassemic adolescents often experience psychosocial problems. The role of family and peer group support in the quality of life of thalassemic adolescents is still inconclusive. This study aim to determine the association between family and peer group support on the quality of life of thalassemic adolescents in one government hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional approach on β-thalassemia sufferers aged 12-18 years who came to the Children's Polyclinic and intervention room in November-December 2023. Family and peer group support was measured using the Social Support Scale, while quality of life was measured using the validated Generic Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Version 4.0 (PedsQL). The data obtained were analyzed using Chi-Square and logistic regression tests. Forty-three patients were involved in this study. The average age of respondents was 14.4 years (range 13.8 – 15.1), the average time of diagnosis was 9.49 years (range 8.0 – 11.0), the average hemoglobin (Hb) level was 9.2 gr/dl (range 8.7 – 9.6 gr/dl). The majority of respondents were male (65.1%), had low education (60.5%), and had a good adherence to iron chelation therapy (100%). The association between family and peer group support on quality of life obtained a p-value of 0.014 and 0.006 with an Odd Ratio (OR) of 4.976 and 7.333 respectively. There is a significant relationship between family and peer group support on the quality of life of thalassemic adolescents. It is recommended for health workers to improve the quality of life of thalassemic adolescents with a family and peer group support approach. Further studies are needed to confirm the results of this study.

Abstract

Children with special needs often experience exclusion and marginalization, especially in access to education. Many traditional schools are not ready to accept them due to the lack of trained teachers. This forces children with special needs to travel long distances to get appropriate education. This study examines the role of institutions in providing services for children with special needs in Depok, focusing on the lack of understanding of parents in caring for children with special needs. The research method involved in-depth interviews and document analysis from various institutions that handle children with special needs in Depok. The results showed that institutions play an important role in supporting the education of children with special needs through the provision of special education facilities, teacher training, psychosocial support, and advocacy. This study emphasizes the importance of developing an adaptive education service model, supporting resources, and the crucial role of teachers in motivating and guiding children with special needs. Thus, increasing parents' understanding of their children's unique needs is a key factor in the success of these services.

Abstract

Introduction: Premature birth is one of the biggest contributors to neonatal mortality and morbidity. It is difficult for premature infants to adapt to life outside the womb due to the immaturity of various organ systems, one of which is the suction reflex relevant to the readiness to oral feeding. Difficulty in oral feeding due to the weakness of sucking is a concern since it often delays the discharge of the infants from the hospital, negatively affects the relationship between mother and infants, and potentially causes eating disorders in children. Some of these reasons are the basis for early intervention to improve oral feeding ability. Interventions that can be carried out are PIOMI and OMS interventions. Objectives: This research aimed at identifying the differences in effectiveness between PIOMI and OMS with respect to the readiness of premature infants to oral feeding in the perinatology division of KMC Hospital, Luragung. Methods: The method used was a quasi-experimental research with pretest and posttest using a number of samples (N) = 32 respondents divided into two intervention groups respectively consisting of 16 respondents. Results: The results indicated that PIOMI (Δ = 9.0, p-value = 0.000) and OMS (Δ = 7.3, p-value = 0.000) had an effect on the readiness of premature infants to oral feeding. PIOMI intervention had a greater difference that consequently, it was more effective than OMS intervention. The confounding factors affecting the readiness of premature infants to oral feeding were gestational age and body weight, while chronological age did not affect. Conclusion: Based on the research results, it was suggested that nurses can use PIOMI intervention to make premature infants ready for oral feeding.

Abstract

Background: Recovery is a way of life to make people’s lives more meaningful by working and interacting socially in the community. The recovery has become a new vision of mental health services, including in persons with schizophrenia. However, this concept is relatively new and still limited to nurses in developing countries, such as Indonesia. Several studies among nurses related to this topic have been conducted in the Western part of Indonesia. Yet, no studies have been implemented in the Eastern part of Indonesia. Therefore, exploring nurses’ perspectives in the Eastern island of Indonesia is necessary to provide a complete understanding of recovery in patients with schizophrenia. Objective: To explore the perspectives of mental health nurses on recovery from schizophrenia. Methods: This was a qualitative study using a phenomenological design. The study was conducted from April to May 2020 at community health centers in Maluku, Indonesia. Eight nurses recruited using purposive sampling participated in in-depth interviews. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, validated, and analyzed based on Colaizzi’s method of data analysis. Results: Five themes were generated, including (i) treat a patient like a brother, (ii) recovery as an unfamiliar term with various meanings, (iii) medication as the primary action but also the main problem, (iv) being recovered if referred to a mental hospital, and (v) ineffective mental health programs. Conclusion: The findings of this study can be used as an input and evaluation for nurse managers to make an effort to uniform the perception among nurses in Indonesia regarding the recovery process in schizophrenia. It is also suggested that community health centers leaders and mental health policymakers prioritize and optimize recovery-oriented mental health programs and services in the Eastern island of Indonesia. Additionally, the findings offer new insight about ‘we are brothers’ or called ‘hidop orang basudara’, which is expected to be one motto for nursing care in Indonesia and beyond.
