Abstract

Abstract

The increasing trend of human trafficking crimes involving Indonesian citizens (WNI) in Southeast Asia, particularly in Myanmar and Cambodia, reveals an increasingly complex and organized form of transnational crime. Many TPPO operations now occur in conflict zones such as Myawaddy, Myanmar, which has become a hub for global digital crime networks. This articleexamines TPPO as a form of man-made social disaster as defined by Law Number 24 of 2007concerning Disaster Management. The study focuses on analyzing the role of social intelligence in the stages of early detection, early warning, forecasting, and problem solving to en ly preventand address cross-border human trafficking. This research employs a descriptive qualitativeapproach, drawing on secondary data from government documents, international organizationreports, and media coverage between 2020 and 2025. The findings reveal weaknesses inIndonesia’s social intelligence system, including poor early detection mechanisms, the absence of integrated early warning systems, limited predictive capabilities, and a reactive response pattern. Fragmented data, lack of inter-agency coordination, and limited community involvement exacerbate these gaps. Therefore, a more integrated, preventive, and community-based social intelligence system is urgently needed as part of the national strategy to address TPPO as a crossborder threat and a contemporary social disaster.

Abstract

The Thai Canal or Kra Canal project has become one of the most significant geopolitical issues in the Southeast Asian region because it has the potential to change the regional maritime balance of power. This article analyses the geopolitical dynamics of the Thai Canal through two major approaches, namely A.T. Mahan's Sea Power theory and Kautilya's Mandala theory. Mahan's approach emphasises the importance of control of sea lanes as a determinant of national power, while Kautilya highlights the hierarchical interactions between states based on interests and balance of power (raison d'état). By combining these two theories, this research seeks to assess how the Thai Canal project affects Indonesia's maritime strategy, particularly in the context of its strategic position towards the Strait of Malacca and the Indonesian Archipelago Sea Route (ALKI). The analysis shows that the Thai Canal has the potential to shift international trade flows from the Strait of Malacca to the Andaman Sea, resulting in changes to the geopolitical configuration of the region. Based on Mahan's perspective, this condition requires Indonesia to strengthen its control over ALKI II and III to maintain its strategic role in the global trade route. Meanwhile, in Kautilya's perspective, Indonesia needs to implement balanced diplomacy between major powers such as China and the United States to maintain regional stability and national interests. Overall, this article emphasises the importance of synergy between maritime power and regional diplomacy as a basis for Indonesia to respond to the new geopolitical dynamics triggered by the Thai Canal.

Abstract

This study examines the role of peaceful narratives as a conflict resolution strategy in the digital arena following Indonesia's 2024 general elections. Amidst rising political polarization, especially among youth active on social media platforms such as TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), digital spaces have become arenas for both political expression and social division. The research applies qualitative content analysis to explore how "peaceful narratives" can reduce symbolic violence and promote inclusive political awareness. Utilizing Social Identity Theory and Johan Galtung's "peace by peaceful means" framework, the study analyzes the dynamics around the viral hashtag #PrettyGirlsDon'tVote02, which symbolizes political satire and identity polarization. Findings reveal that peaceful narratives counteract digital conflicts by fostering empathy, respectful dialogue, and civic engagement, thereby strengthening social cohesion and democratic deliberation. The study recommends reinforcing political literacy, creating healthier dialogue platforms, promoting public verification of information, and encouraging positive social role models. Ultimately, peaceful narratives not only mitigate digital conflicts but also lay the foundation for national unity and resilience in Indonesia's evolving democratic landscape.

Abstract

Indonesia as the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, faces a growing ideological contest between National Islam a locally rooted, moderate, and inclusive form of Islam and Transnational Islam, which promotes a more conservative and globalized religious orientation. This study explores the dynamics of this ideological struggle and its implications for Indonesia’s socio-political stability and national security. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with library research methods, the paper analyzes the ideological differences, conflict patterns, and state as well as civil society interventions in managing tensions between these two streams. The findings show that Transnational Islam, represented by movements such as the Muslim Brotherhood, Hizbut Tahrir, and Salafi groups, often challenges Indonesia’s foundational ideology of Pancasila and promotes exclusivism that threatens social cohesion. Meanwhile, National Islam embodied by Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah emphasizes moderation, cultural adaptation, and democracy, acting as a stabilizing force. The ideological clash manifests not only in theological debates but also in education, politics, and public discourse, sometimes escalating into violence and terrorism. Applying Social Identity Theory, Social Conflict Theory, and Coser’s Functional Theory of Conflict, this study concludes that religious identity, power struggles, and group dynamics collectively shape the conflict landscape. Effective conflict intervention requires the synergy of state policies, moderate religious movements, and community-based dialogue to promote religious moderation and maintain national unity.

Abstract

Indonesia faces high disaster risk due to its geographical position in the ring of fire and tropical climate. Disaster mitigation is a strategic necessity to maintain social stability and national security. The Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) launched the Disaster Resilient Subdistrict Program (KENCANA) to strengthen subdistrict capacity in facing disaster threats. Through a literature review, this article examines the role of Kemendagri in implementing KENCANA and its contribution to risk mitigation and national security. The results of the study show that Kemendagri's active involvement in training subdistrict heads and cross-sector coordination increases the effectiveness of mitigation and local resilience, which has an impact on strengthening national security. Challenges in implementation were found in limited resources and coordination, which can be overcome by increasing human resource capacity and multi-stakeholder collaboration
