Abstract

Infectious diseases are a threatening health problem in developing countries, including Indonesia. Diseases caused by bacterial infections can be overcome relatively easily after the discovery of various antibiotics. Uncontrolled use of antibiotics will trigger antibiotic resistance. With the incidence of antibiotic resistance, the potential of antibiotics will be reduced in treating infections and diseases in humans, animals and plants. Community service activities aim to provide knowledge to the community about antibiotics, how to use antibiotics wisely, and introduction to the concept of antibiotic resistance. The activities carried out were in the form of empowerment in the form of counseling for the community and assistance in the form of training for groups of prospective antibiotic wise cadres in the Siring Agung Village area. The results of this activity were obtained to increase the insight and knowledge of the community and health cadres about Antibiotic Wisdom, especially the use of antibiotics correctly, how to get them, how to follow up on antibiotic drug waste if it remains. In addition, the community and cadres also have the skills to wash hands properly and correctly using running water and soap independently to prevent transmission of infectious diseases. Furthermore, it is hoped that continuous service activities with similar themes at different layers or levels of society can be carried out in order for the community to know the importance of the principle of using antibiotics wisely so that the incidence of antibiotic drug resistance can be suppressed to increase.

Abstract

Malaria is caused by a parasite of the genus Plasmodium that is transmitted to humans through the bite of a female Anopheles mosquito. Indonesia is the second highest ranked region in Asia with 214 regencies/cities in Indonesia that are still malaria endemic spread from Sumatra to Papua. Knowledge is one of the important components in preventing malaria transmission. The purpose of this service was to assist and screen for malaria in the context of early detection of malaria in the community and to increase public knowledge about malaria and malaria mosquito vectors. Activities were carried out by providing pretests followed by education and socialization of malaria and early screening of malaria cases with Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) examination. Education and socialization events were held at RT 01 Kemelak Baturaja using LCD projector media as well as posters and pamphlets. A total of 83 people attended the counseling event consisting of 37 men and 46 women and 50 people carried out early detection of malaria RDT examination. Pretest results obtained knowledge that was still lacking in knowledge of malaria and malaria vectors by 78% and good knowledge by 22%. There was an increase in knowledge in the posttest held after counseling and education where lack of knowledge was 44% and good knowledge to 56%. On examination with RDT found no positive cases of malaria. Education and socialization in the community about the symptoms of malaria and its vectors can increase awareness of the disease and prevent malaria vector mosquito bites. Therefore, education and assistance are an important part of efforts to prevent and reduce cases that support malaria elimination.

Abstract

Nutrition is a contributing factor in the maintenance of optimal immune system functions. Disturbances in nutritional status, such as malnutrition, would impact various structures, mediators, and processes in the immune system in responding to pathogenic infections, hence increasing vulnerability to infections. Adolescents are an age group often considered “healthy”, but screening in this age group proves important in reassuring optimal growth and development, which in turn will also impact the next generation. Pesantren is an Indonesian educational institution serving adolescents with a boarding school system, so it is of high importance for adolescent santri to know their own nutritional status in preventing infectious diseases. This community service event was held at Pesantren Thawalib Sriwijaya to inform about the importance of nutritional status in prevention of infectious diseases. The activities comprised of classical counseling and anthropometric measurement of participating santri. There were 42 participating santri attending Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) and Madrasah Aliyah (MA) in this event, and plotting results showed most santri had normal nutritional status. However, nutritional status monitoring and awareness to infectious disease still needs to be kept up, as there are various other factors that may influence the spread of various infectious diseases.

Abstract

Abstract

Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is difficult to eradicate due to several factors, including insufficient treatment and medication side effects. Linezolid is among the medications with serious adverse effects. Linezolid toxicity is suspected to be related to the drug's binding to mitochondrial 16s rRNA. Some studies indicate that polymorphisms in patients' mtDNA may increase vulnerability to the development of toxic optic neuropathy. This study aims to identify a genetic influence on the vulnerability to the occurrence of toxic optic neuropathy side effects in drug-resistant tuberculosis patients receiving linezolid treatment. This research was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sriwijaya, Palembang, from September to October 2023. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was undertaken to detect mutations in the G3010A mtDNA of the patients. Two patients experiencing toxic optic neuropathy side effects during drug-resistant tuberculosis treatment underwent blood sample collection. Blood samples were examined for mutations in the G3010A and A2706G genes using the PCR-RFLP method. The PCR-RFLP examination results indicated the presence of mutations in G3010A. In conclusion, polymorphism of G3010A mtDNA may contribute to the vulnerability to toxic optic neuropathy side effects in drug-resistant tuberculosis patients receiving linezolid. Further research with a larger population is needed to prove the involvement of mtDNA polymorphisms in the vulnerability to toxic optic neuropathy.

Abstract

The cell membrane plays an important role in cell traffic because it functions to secrete various molecules. The selective transport system allows the movement of molecules into or out of the cell compartment. By controlling the movement of substances from one compartment to another, membranes exert a strong influence on metabolic pathways. Cell membranes are composed of proteins and lipids with a very important function in maintaining the rhythm of circulation and cell transport. In addition, the cell membrane also plays a role in maintaining the integrity and relationship, and communication of cells.

Abstract

Stunting has become a dietary concern in Indonesia. Ogan Komering Ilir district of South Sumatra Province has a stunting prevalence exceeding 20%, highlighting a significant public health concern according to WHO. Addressing this challenge requires the active involvement of health cadres, who play a pivotal role in enhancing maternal and child health. This study aimed to enhance the knowledge of health cadres in stunting prevention through the application of the emotional demonstration method at the village level. A total of 23 active cadres from the healthcare system were purposefully selected to participate in this activity. The experiment group, consisting of 12 cadres, underwent training using the emotional demonstration method through interactive games, while the control group, totaling 11 cadres, followed conventional methods, such as lectures. The activity was held with separate sessions for each group. The participants’ knowledge was measured using questionnaires covering the understanding of stunting, exclusive breastfeeding, complementary foods, anemia, and sources of nutrients. Data were analyzed using a dependent t-test. Average pre-post knowledge gains were 1.15 scores higher for experiment groups compared to 0.19 scores higher for control groups. Statistically significant changes in knowledge scores were observed in the experiment group (p = 0.002), while the control group showed insignificant changes (p = 0.321). Education activities employing emotional demonstration through interactive games are effective in increasing knowledge of stunting prevention.
