Abstract

The low level of student learning participation in sociology learning is indicated by the lack of student involvement in asking questions, expressing opinions, discussing, and concluding the learning material. This study aims to determine the effect of the 5E learning cycle model assisted by thinglink media on student learning participation in Sociology subjects. This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental type and a posttest only design with a non-equivalent control group design. The study population was all 200 students of grade XI of SMA Negeri 1 Gunungsari. The research sample was determined using a simple random sampling technique after class matching so that class XI-I was obtained as the experimental class and class XI-K as the control class, each consisting of 33 students. The research instrument was a student learning participation observation sheet that had met the validity and reliability tests. Data analysis was carried out through normality tests, homogeneity tests, and hypothesis tests using independent samples t-tests. The results showed that the average student learning participation in the experimental class was 82.42, higher than the control class at 71.51. The results of the hypothesis test obtained a Sig. value. (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05 and the calculated T value (5.203) > Ttable (1.998) so that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Thus, it can be concluded that the 5E learning cycle model assisted by thinglink media has a significant effect on student learning participation in Sociology subjects at SMA Negeri 1 Gunungsari. The ability to speak English is very important where in this era, English is the language used in international communication. However, there are still many 10 grade students at SMA Islam Pagerungan Besar who have difficulties in speaking English. This study uses a qualitatve method with case study approach, data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and analysis of related documents. The results of the study indicate that there are 2 main factors causing difficulties experienced by students, namely internal and external factors. Internal factors include lack of confidence, limited vocabulary mastery, difficulty in pronunciation, afraid of making mistakes, and lack of motivation. Meanwhile, external factors include less supportive environment, learning facilities are inadequate, less effecttive teaching methods, lack of support from teacher and friends, and lack of opportunity to practice speaking. Based on these findings, it is suggestions that teachers and school create more supportive learning environment to increase students’ self-confidence, provide more opportunities for students to practice speaking through activities outside the classroom, and use more interactive and innovative teaching methods. In addition, improving learning facilities such as providing language laboratories and digital learning resources, as well as providing books on speaking skills are needed to help students improve their English speaking skills.

Abstract

This article examines the psychology of digital games and virtual reality through the lens of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) developed by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan. The study explores four interrelated psychological phenomena: flow experience, immersion, gamification, and the perceptual effects of virtual reality. Flow refers to the state of complete concentration and enjoyment during gameplay when challenge and skill are balanced. Immersion describes the psychological state of being deeply absorbed in a digital environment. Gamification involves applying game elements to non-game contexts to enhance motivation and engagement. Virtual reality affects human perception by providing realistic three-dimensional sensory stimulation that alters spatial awareness and information processing. Using SDT as the grand theory, this paper argues that digital games and virtual reality are psychologically compelling because they fulfill three basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The analysis draws on studies from Indonesian universities and international research to contextualize these phenomena within the Indonesian educational and digital landscape. Findings suggest that these technologies offer significant potential for educational applications while also presenting challenges such as digital dependence and cybersickness. Balanced and informed use of digital technologies is recommended.
