Abstract

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding coverage in Bengkulu City has decreased over the last three years. Mothers' confidence in their abilities and good mental health become an essential part of supporting exclusive breastfeeding. Objective: This study aims to examine the differences between self-efficacy and mental health of mothers based on their breastfeeding status, located in Bengkulu City. Methods: The researchers employed a cross-sectional approach to analyze the study. The sample consisted of 72 mothers with infants aged 0-6 months. The researchers selected the samples using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out using a digital questionnaire (via Google Forms) through validity and reliability tests. Data were analyzed using an independent t-test. The mean self-efficacy score of partially breastfeeding mothers is lower than that of exclusively breastfeeding mothers. The mean mental health score of partially breastfeeding mothers is higher than that of exclusively breastfeeding mothers. Results: The results of the independent t-test found that the average self-efficacy score of exclusively breastfeeding mothers was 55.58, and the average mental health score of partially breastfeeding mothers was 10.32.Conclusion: There was a difference in the self-efficacy and mental health scores of partially and exclusively breastfeeding mothers. A high self-efficacy score indicates high maternal confidence. Meanwhile, high mental health scores indicate that mothers experience symptoms of psychological disorders. The achievement of successful exclusive breastfeeding is closely related to boosting self-assurance and preserving a mother's mental well-being.

Abstract

Introduction: Stunting remains a significant public health concern in Indonesia, with Bengkulu City reporting a prevalence of 12.9% in 2022. Consumption of macro and micronutrients is a factor directly related to toddlers' nutritional status. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the differences in macro and micronutrient consumption among stunted toddlers in Bengkulu City. Methods: A mixed-method approach with a sequential explanatory design was employed, involving 50 stunted toddlers and their mothers. Quantitative data were collected using a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), while qualitative data were obtained through interviews with six mothers. Results: The results showed no significant differences in the consumption of energy, carbohydrates, protein, fat, and zinc between toddlers with severe stunting and stunting. However, a significant difference was found in iron consumption (p=0.048), with severely stunted toddlers consuming less iron compared to stunted toddlers. Interviews revealed similar dietary patterns among mothers of both groups, with rice as the staple food and limited fish consumption.  Conclusion: The findings suggest monitoring iron-rich food consumption in stunted children is essential. Strengthening family empowerment programs, expanding educational initiatives on iron consumption, and regular nutritional monitoring are recommended to address stunting. Promotion of affordable, iron-rich foods and monitoring of iron intake by mothers and health workers are crucial in the treatment of stunting.

Abstract

Stunting prevention in high-risk families, particularly regarding environmental factors, remains a significant issue in Bengkulu Province as an area characterized by limited access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation, both key indicators of stunting risk. This study aimed to identify factors associated with the risk of stunting among families in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. A cross-sectional approach was employed using secondary data from the 2021 Population Survey (PK21) of Bengkulu Province, which included 436,490 families. Univariate, bivariate (chi-square), and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted. The results showed that 83.1% of families in Bengkulu Province were not at risk of stunting. Factors significantly associated with stunting risk included the occupation and educational level of the head of household, health insurance status, household income adequacy, housing ownership status, and exposure to information through media and health officers (p < 0.001). Families with heads of household working as farmers and those with heads who did not complete elementary school had the highest prevalence of stunting risk. Families without health insurance, inadequate income, rent-free housing, and no exposure to the Bangga Kencana program through media or officers also exhibited a higher prevalence of stunting risk. Logistic regression analysis revealed that families not receiving Bangga Kencana information from officers were 1.08 times more likely to be at risk of stunting (95% CI = 1.05–11). In conclusion, demographic factors and information exposure were identified as critical risk factors for stunting among families in Bengkulu Province. These findings highlight the importance of targeted interventions and information dissemination in reducing stunting risk.

Abstract

Background: Lack of knowledge about breastfeeding is often a major barrier for mothers to provide exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a baby's life, This is recommended as the optimal standard to support infant growth and health. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of health education using the Questions and Answers module in improving knowledge about breastfeeding. Specifically, it sought to assess the extent to which this educational approach enhances participants' understanding of breastfeeding benefits, techniques, and common challenges. The study aimed to determine whether the interactive nature of the module leads to better knowledge retention compared to traditional educational methods. Subjects and Method: This was a quasi-experimental design involving 30 third trimester pregnant women who were divided into an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group received education based on question-and-answer modules, while the control group relied on standard Maternal and Child Health (MCH) books. The dependent variable included knowledge about breastfeeding. The independent variable was health education using the Questions and Answers module, as it represented the intervention aimed at improving participants' breastfeeding knowledge. The data were then collected by questionnaire. The mean difference of knowledge before and after question-and-answer modules was tested by independent t-test. Results: Knowledge scores about breastfeeding were higher in the intervention group (Mean= 19.60; SD= 2.13) than in the control group (Mean= 16.27; SD= 2.15), but this result was not statistically significant (p= 0.253). Conclusion: There was an increase in knowledge scores about breastfeeding after the Questions & Answers module was given, but the results were not statistically significant. There is a need to develop more interactive education programs to support mothers in providing exclusive breastfeeding, especially in areas with low levels of knowledge.

Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of a baby's life is an important foundation for optimal growth and development. However, the success of an exclusive breastfeeding program is not only determined by the role of the mother, but also depends heavily on the support of the husband as the main companion. This community service activity aims to increase the involvement of husbands in supporting exclusive breastfeeding for the first child through an educational and participatory approach. The target of this activity was a married couple who were waiting for the birth of their first child in Bengkulu City. The implementation of the program is carried out through a series of activities in the form of counseling, interactive discussions, and continuous assistance during pregnancy up to six months after childbirth. Evaluation was carried out using pretest and posttest to measure changes in knowledge and attitudes, as well as observation of the husband's direct involvement in the breastfeeding process. The results showed a significant increase in husbands' knowledge and attitudes towards the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, as well as an increase in their involvement in supporting their wives both emotionally and practically. These findings confirm that education that actively involves husbands can be an effective strategy in supporting the success of exclusive breastfeeding. Therefore, breastfeeding counseling and mentoring programs in the community should be designed holistically by involving both parents as a supportive unit.
