Abstract

This study investigated the experiences of Indonesian students pursuing higher education in the United States, highlighting the importance of understanding their cultural adaptation, academic challenges, and social integration. Despite the significant presence of Indonesian students, comprehensive research addressing their unique experiences, and challenges in a new educational environment is limited. The study aims to understand their cultural adaptation, identify academic challenges, and examine strategies for social integration. A phenomenological qualitative approach was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews with doctoral students to gather in-depth insights. Thematic analysis reveals that cultural adaptation is significantly influenced by language barriers, differing educational norms, and social dynamics. Participants reported academic challenges related to adjusting to critical thinking-based learning and independent study practices. Additionally, social integration is often complicated by cultural misunderstandings and the individualistic values prevalent in American society. To address these challenges, students employ strategies such as building support networks, engaging in campus activities, and utilizing institutional resources. This study underscores the necessity for proactive cultural engagement and institutional support to enhance international students' experiences and foster more inclusive educational environments.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the integration of digital literacy into BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing—Indonesian for Foreign Learners) instruction as a strategy to promote the comprehensive skill development of international students, encompassing linguistic, digital, and intercultural competencies. Employing a corpus-based qualitative approach, the research focuses on the analysis of authentic digital communication products created by foreign students through task-based learning activities. The corpus consists of multimodal texts—including blog entries, podcast transcripts, infographics, and interactive digital posters—collected from intermediate-level BIPA students at universities at South Sumatra. The findings reveal three key insights. First, linguistically, students demonstrate improvements in sentence structure, thematic vocabulary (culture, society, technology), and pragmatic appropriateness in digital contexts. Second, in terms of digital literacy, students effectively utilise various platforms (Padlet, Canva, and Flipgrid) to construct and deliver messages creatively, interactively, and in alignment with audience expectations. Third, interculturally, students exhibit the ability to interpret local communication norms, avoid cultural faux pas, and present cross-cultural perspectives through their digital narratives. Corpus analysis also indicates a shift in learners’ roles—from passive recipients of information to reflective, collaborative, and globally connected content creators. This study highlights the potential of integrating digital literacy into BIPA instruction to foster essential 21st-century competencies. The findings provide a valuable foundation for developing a BIPA curriculum that is responsive to both digital transformation and the cultural diversity of international students.

Abstract

The integration of digital technology into education necessitates innovative learning tools that go beyond traditional textbooks. One such innovation is the use of electronic modules (e-modules), particularly those based on Electronic Publication (EPUB) formats, which offer interactive and accessible learning experiences. This study investigates the effectiveness of EPUB-based e-modules in improving students' ability to write short story texts. This descriptive quantitative study involved 28 grade XI students from a senior high school. The research employed a pretest-posttest design to measure students’ performance in writing short story texts before and after using the EPUB-based e-module. Data were collected using a performance-based writing test assessed through a standardized rubric. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics, normality tests, and a paired sample t-test.The average student score increased from 56.43 (pretest) to 79.43 (posttest) after using the EPUB-based e-module. The results of the paired t-test indicated a statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (p = 0.000 0.05), confirming the effectiveness of the e-module in enhancing students’ writing skills. The findings demonstrate that EPUB-based e-modules are effective teaching tools for improving students’ ability to write short stories. Their interactive and flexible design supports better engagement and learning outcomes. This study recommends further development and integration of EPUB-based materials in language learning to promote digital literacy and writing proficiency.

Abstract

This study explores the practicality of mobile learning-based media in enhancing creative writing skills among junior high school students in Palembang City. The research aims to assess teachers’ and students’ perceptions of its practicality. This research represents the small group testing phase of a larger research and development project. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with teachers and students to gather qualitative and quantitative insights regarding the use of mobile learning media in creative writing instruction. The findings indicate that mobile learning-based media for creative writing is perceived as practical by both teachers and students. Assessments focused on material quality, language use, and media presentation aspects, all of which were rated highly feasible by participants. The results underscore the potential of this media to facilitate creative writing in junior high schools. The positive perceptions from small group testing suggest that mobile learning-based media provides an effective and user-friendly tool for improving creative writing skills. Teachers highlighted the relevance of the materials, while students appreciated the engaging and accessible format, supporting its integration into classroom practice. Mobile learning-based media demonstrates strong practicality in creative writing instruction for junior high schools in Palembang City. With its high feasibility ratings, it holds promise for broader implementation to support creative writing skills development. Abstract

This study aims to test the effectiveness of e-modules for writing argumentative essays based on local contexts that are integrated with Project-Based Learning (PjBL). The method used was a quasi-experiment with a non-equivalent control group design. The research sample included class XI.6 as the experimental class and class XI.7 as the control class. The experimental group learned using e-modules at each stage of PjBL, while the control group obtained conventional learning. The results showed that the learning outcomes of the experimental group were significantly higher. Thus, so that e-module-based learning with local context and PjBL is declared effective for argumentative essay writing skills.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the needs of students and teachers for the development of FlipHTML5-based academic writing e-modules with the Student-Centered Learning (SCL) approach as the initial stage in the Dick and Carey R&D model. The study involved 109 students of class X who were determined through purposive sampling. Data were collected through needs analysis questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and class observations, then analyzed descriptively, quantitatively, and qualitatively. The results show a striking gap between the availability of conventional materials and the learning preferences of Generation Z students, where 98% of students need multimodal teaching materials that are easily accessible through digital applications to reduce the cognitive burden in understanding writing materials. The integration of the SCL approach is also proven to be urgent to support learning independence. These findings confirm the need for the immediate development of interactive e-modules as a strategic pedagogical solution to improve academic writing competence.
