Abstract

This research explores the semantic shifts occurring in English slang, examining both historical and contemporary examples to understand the underlying mechanisms and sociocultural factors driving these changes. Semantic shifts, particularly in slang, involve the alteration of word meanings due to various influences, including social interactions, media exposure, cultural exchange, and significant societal events. Through a literature review, the study investigates how slang terms evolve over time, focusing on the role of social media platforms in accelerating these shifts. Key mechanisms identified include the blending and shortening of words (shashification), distributional modelling for semantic change detection, and the impact of global and cultural exchanges. The study also highlights the influence of media and influential figures in popularizing new slang, as well as the role of technological advancements in facilitating rapid semantic evolution. The findings underscore the importance of understanding slang not only as a linguistic phenomenon but also as a reflection of broader societal and cultural shifts.

Abstract

English has increasingly functioned as global communication among people around the world with diverse cultural background. In this era, English is more frequently used among non-native speakers than native speakers themselves especially in academic, professional, and intercultural settings. Despite these developments, native speaker norms continue to have a strong influence in English language teaching and English language learning. NESTs are often viewed as a role model, and NNESTs viewed as someone who are incompetence in teaching a language. This research aims to find the strengths and weakness from students’ perspective, using a qualitative method and interview questions about each strength and weakness and their implication in English language learning. The result of this research was that each side was beneficial for students, as the NESTs helps with their pronunciation, idiomatic, and real-life communication usage to train students and building their confidence, and The NNESTs understood the students’ difficulties in learning and could be apply a teaching strategy to help them understand. However, the status of native or not wasn’t the important thing, it is the quality of teaching and the outcome for students so it will help them ready to communicate with people around the world.

Abstract

Abstract

In the context of globalization, interaction among individuals from different cultural backgrounds has become increasingly common in social, educational, and professional domains. Intercultural communication competence (ICC) is understood as the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately in such interactions, which involves not only linguistic proficiency but also pragmatic awareness. This study seeks to investigate the role of pragmatics in intercultural communication competence by examining participants’ perceptions of pragmatic use in intercultural communication. Using a descriptive qualitative research design, the study involved 15 seventh-semester students from the English Education Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang. Data were gathered through closed-ended written interview questions distributed online via Google Forms. The data were analyzed qualitatively by interpreting response patterns related to pragmatic competence. The findings reveal that participants largely acknowledge the significance of pragmatic awareness, particularly in relation to politeness strategies, understanding implied meanings, and sensitivity to cultural norms, in achieving effective intercultural communication. Furthermore, the results indicate that grammatical accuracy alone does not ensure communicative success across cultures, as pragmatic competence plays a vital role in reducing misunderstanding and promoting appropriate interaction. This study concludes that pragmatics is a fundamental component of intercultural communication competence and emphasizes the need to integrate pragmatic awareness into language education to enhance intercultural communicative effectiveness.

Abstract

This study examines the use of technology and digital media in English language learning within the Teaching English as an International Language (TEIL) framework, focusing on understanding students' experiences and perceptions. A qualitative research approach was employed involving 15 first-semester students from the English Education program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews then analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and themes. Results revealed that students actively utilize various digital platforms including video streaming services (YouTube, Netflix), social media (Twitter/X, TikTok, Instagram), learning applications (Duolingo, Google Translate), online games, and music streaming platforms for authentic language exposure. Students perceived significant pedagogical benefits including increased motivation, improved language skills particularly in listening and vocabulary, better material comprehension through multimodal content, exposure to diverse English varieties and accents, and valuable opportunities for real international communication practice. However, notable challenges emerged including digital distraction, unreliable internet connectivity, and comprehension difficulties with fast-paced authentic content, highlighting the need for systematic instructional support to maximize technology's potential in TEIL contexts.

Abstract

This study examines how translation techniques interact with ideological orientation in the Indonesian rendering of selected poems from Firstborn by Louise Glück. It integrates Lawrence Venuti's concepts of foreignization and domestication with the taxonomy of translation techniques proposed by Lucía Molina and Amparo Hurtado Albir. Adopting a qualitative design grounded in comparative textual analysis, the dataset comprises 21 translation units drawn from five poems, along with their Indonesian versions published on Buruan.co. The findings indicate that literal translation and borrowing tend to align with a foreignizing orientation, as they preserve stylistic features and cultural markers of the source text. In contrast, techniques such as adaptation, modulation, amplification, reduction, and transposition are more closely associated with domestication, facilitating readability and cultural accessibility for the target audience. Overall, the distribution reflects a relatively balanced pattern, though it leans slightly toward domestication, particularly in instances where semantic clarity and reader comprehension are prioritized. By grounding ideological tendencies in observable textual evidence, this study contributes to translation studies by linking macro-level theoretical constructs (ideologies) with micro-level analytical practice (techniques). It also provides practical insights for translators seeking to negotiate the tension between aesthetic fidelity and readability in the translation of contemporary poetry.

Abstract

The global spread of English has significantly reshaped the goals and practices of English language teaching worldwide. English is no longer used exclusively by native speakers but functions as an international language for communication among speakers from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This development has led to the emergence of Teaching English as an International Language (TEIL), which emphasizes intelligibility, communicative effectiveness, and intercultural awareness rather than native-speaker norms. This study aims to examine the concept of TEIL and its implications for the development of the English Language Teaching (ELT) curriculum. Employing a qualitative approach with a library research design, this study analyzes fifteen relevant national and international journal articles using content analysis techniques. The findings reveal that the integration of TEIL principles into the ELT curriculum supports the development of global communicative competence, acceptance of English language variation, and cross-cultural understanding. The review also indicates that teachers and students generally hold positive perceptions of the TEIL approach, although challenges remain in terms of teacher readiness and the availability of appropriate teaching materials. Overall, the study highlights the importance of adopting a TEIL-oriented ELT curriculum to create more inclusive, contextual, and globally relevant English language education.
