Abstract

Speaking skill is a crucial component of English language learning; however, many EFL students experience anxiety, low confidence, and limited opportunities to practice oral communication. This study aims to develop gamification strategies to boost English speaking skills among third-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Nias. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) design using the ADDIE model, consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The participants were ten students selected from one class with a total population of thirty-eight students. Data were collected through speaking tests, observation checklists, questionnaires, and documentation. The findings indicate that the developed gamification strategies increased students’ motivation, participation, confidence, and speaking fluency. These results suggest that gamification, when systematically designed, can serve as an effective instructional strategy for improving English speaking skills in higher education EFL contexts.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve vocational high school students’ English speaking skills through the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI)–based learning technology. The activity was conducted at SMK Swasta Emmanuel Agung and focused on addressing students’ low speaking confidence, limited opportunities for oral practice, and the lack of innovative learning media in English instruction. The implementation employed an experiential learning approach consisting of material presentation, demonstration, and direct speaking practice using an AI-based learning platform. Data were collected through observation, field notes, and activity documentation, and analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques. The results indicate that the integration of AI technology in English learning positively influenced students’ speaking performance, particularly in terms of pronunciation accuracy, fluency, and self-confidence. Students demonstrated increased participation and motivation during speaking activities, supported by immediate feedback provided by the AI system. These findings suggest that AI-based learning serves as an effective and applicable instructional strategy for enhancing English speaking skills in vocational education. Therefore, the integration of Artificial Intelligence in English learning is recommended as a sustainable approach to support students’ communicative competence and readiness for the global workforce.

Abstract

This study examines the importance of high-quality teaching materials, particularly textbooks, in achieving English language learning objectives in Indonesia. Textbooks play a crucial role in the Merdeka Curriculum. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the feasibility of the English textbook “English for Nusantara” for eighth-grade junior high school students at SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Barat, by evaluating its content against Brian Tomlinson's 16 criteria for teaching materials. Employing a Qualitative approach with content analysis on Chapters 1-5, the findings revealed that the textbook substantially meets the criteria, with 14 criteria fulfilled and a high match percentage of 87.5%, placing it in the "Good" category. The two less-fulfilled criteria concerned drawing students’ attention to linguistic features and specific aspects of right-left brain stimulation. Overall, the results indicate the textbook is of adequate and effective quality, providing a systematic structure for grammar and vocabulary, and containing relevant, varied, and high-impact activities. This study contributes valuable input for educators and curriculum developers to improve the quality of teaching materials and optimize student learning outcomes in English.

Abstract

English reading instruction in elementary schools often emphasizes mechanical decoding and pronunciation accuracy, while reading comprehension and reading purposes receive limited attention. This condition leads third-grade students to experience difficulties in understanding texts due to limited vocabulary knowledge and unclear reading objectives. This study aimed to develop English reading strategies that emphasize vocabulary comprehension and purposeful reading for third-grade elementary school students. The study employed a Research and Development method using the ADDIE model, which includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. A needs analysis was conducted through classroom observations and teacher interviews to identify students’ reading difficulties. The results indicated that students’ limited vocabulary knowledge caused them to read English texts mechanically without clear reading purposes. Based on these findings, an English reading strategy module was developed with a structured instructional syntax consisting of setting explicit reading objectives, introducing vocabulary contextually, guided reading practice, comprehension checking, and gradual scaffolding toward independent reading. Expert validation results confirmed that the developed module was valid, practical, and appropriate for classroom use. A limited try-out also showed positive teacher responses and increased student engagement during reading activities. In conclusion, the developed English reading strategies effectively support vocabulary development and purposeful reading in elementary school English instruction.
