Abstract

Abstract

Background: The heart is highly susceptible to oxidative stress. Hypoxia can induce oxidative stress in the heart, leading to cardiac damage. Objective: This study investigated the antioxidant effects of Crescentia cujete extract on oxidative stress in hypoxic rat hearts. Methods: Antioxidant capacity was evaluated using DPPH assay. Sprague Dawley rats were divided into eight groups: four received C. cujete extract (400 mg/kg/day for 14 days) and four served as controls. Hypoxia was induced for 3, 7, and 14 days using a hypoxic chamber (8% O₂, 92% N₂). Heart tissue was analyzed for malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), and catalase activity. Results: C. cujete extract demonstrated moderate antioxidant capacity (IC50 = 158.45 µg/mL). In extract-treated rats, MDA levels were significantly lower compared to controls, while catalase activity was significantly higher. GSH levels were higher in treated groups but not statistically significant. Histopathological analysis revealed less cardiac necrosis in extract-treated groups. Conclusion: C. cujete extract demonstrates protective effects against hypoxia-induced cardiac oxidative stress. These findings suggest potential as complementary therapy for oxidative cardiac damage, although further studies are needed to establish clinical efficacy and safety.

Abstract

Introduction: Anthropometric measurements, such as fat calipers and circumference, offer non-invasive insights into fat distribution and total adiposity, both crucial health markers. Increased visceral fat heightens cardiovascular risk by driving metabolic dysfunction. The TG/HDL-C ratio serves as a strong predictor of cardiovascular risk, linking systemic inflammation, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. Excess adiposity also elevates blood pressure by impairing lipid metabolism and vascular function. This study aims to see the correlation between anthropometry measurement (calf, neck, upper arm, and waist circumferences), body weight, body mass index and fat caliper with the triglyceride/HDL ratio and blood pressure. Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted in Krendang Village in November 2024, included participants aged 18 years or older, excluding those using antihypertensive or cholesterol-lowering medications or unwilling to provide blood samples or undergo physical exams. Measurements included skinfold thickness at four sites, various anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, and venous blood samples analyzed for HDL, triglycerides, and their ratio. Statistical analysis utilized Spearman Correlation, focusing on the triglyceride/HDL ratio Results: Multivariate analysis revealed that waist circumference is the strongest predictor of the triglyceride/HDL ratio. Hip circumference and calf circumference were identified as key indicators for predicting both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, while suprailiac fat caliper and scapular fat caliper were specifically associated with predicting diastolic blood pressure. Conclusion:  Waist circumference, along with select anthropometric and fat caliper measurements, serves as valuable predictors for cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors, emphasizing their importance in early risk assessment.

Abstract

Cardiac arrest is a critical medical emergency with a high mortality rate that requires immediate and appropriate action to increase the chances of survival. One key factor in improving survival outcomes is the involvement of bystanders, particularly young people, in providing Basic Life Support (BLS). This community service activity was carried out to improve the knowledge and practical skills of youth organization members (Karang Taruna) in Kota Bambu Subdistrict, West Jakarta, in recognizing and responding to cardiac arrest using BLS procedures. The activity adopted the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) approach. The planning stage involved the preparation of materials and training tools for both theoretical and practical learning. The implementation phase included a 45-minute health education session covering the basics of BLS, especially cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), followed by hands-on training. Participants were divided into small groups and guided through practical CPR simulations using manikins, facilitated by six trained nursing students. The activity was conducted on June 14, 2025, and attended by 57 participants, with 27 actively participating in the CPR practice session. The evaluation stage revealed a notable increase in the participants’ understanding and ability to perform CPR effectively. This indicates that community-based BLS training can be a powerful tool in improving emergency response at the grassroots level. In addition to raising awareness, the activity also empowered the youth as first responders in their community, strengthening their role in emergency preparedness and response. The follow-up stage emphasized the importance of sustainability through continued collaboration between local health professionals and community organizations. In conclusion, BLS education and training programs for youth can significantly enhance community resilience and are recommended for broader implementation in other regions.

Abstract

Obesity, central obesity, and hypercholesterolemia are prevalent yet often unrecognized health conditions that significantly elevate the risk for various non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cardiovascular disorders. These conditions, when left undiagnosed and untreated, contribute to the growing public health burden worldwide. This community service program was designed to raise awareness and provide early detection of these conditions through basic health screening measures, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and blood cholesterol levels. The program was implemented in Tomang Subdistrict, West Jakarta, where 90 participants were involved. The findings from the screening revealed concerning results: 67% of the participants were classified as obese, and 58% had central obesity, both of which are major risk factors for NCDs. A deeper analysis of lifestyle factors highlighted that high-fat diets, sedentary behaviors, and night shift work were significant contributors to the high rates of obesity and metabolic abnormalities observed. The educational outreach component of the program, which included the provision of information about healthy diets, exercise, and the importance of regular health screenings, proved to be effective in raising awareness about these health issues. Moreover, the simple health screening process was well-received by the community and contributed to a greater understanding of individual health risks. This initiative is expected to serve as a sustainable model for promoting health and preventing metabolic diseases in the community. The findings underscore the importance of early detection and education as critical strategies in the fight against obesity and related NCDs, suggesting that such programs can play a key role in reducing the future burden of chronic diseases in underserved populations

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Oxygen is one of the supports of multicellular life and is necessary for aerobic metabolism. However, the use of oxygen can produce by-products, one of which is reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can also increase due to external factors such as exposure to ionizing rays, and vehicle smoke. When reactive oxygen species levels are high, the body can experience a condition called oxidative stress, which is a condition that can cause tissue damage. To overcome this, antioxidants are needed, namely compounds that can donate electrons to free radicals to neutralize their effects. Antioxidants are divided into endogenous antioxidants and exogenous antioxidants. Endogenous antioxidants are antioxidants found in the body. Exogenous antioxidants are antioxidants that come from outside the body. Because there is an increase in ROS levels due to external influences, an increase in exogenous antioxidants is needed, one of which is chamomile flowers. This study evaluated qualitative phytochemical levels using the Harnborne method, total antioxidant capacity using the Blois method, total quantitative levels of alkaloids using the Trivedi et al method, BSLT toxicity using the Meyer method, and fingerprint analysis using HPTLC. The obtained chamomile flowers are dried and extracted by maceration using methanol solvent. The test results on chamomile flowers revealed phytochemical content in the form of alkaloids, betasianin, cardioglycosides, coumarins, flavonoids, phenols, quinones, saponins, steroids, tepenoids and tannins. Antioxidant ability 209.27 g/ml; Total alkaloid content of 12.62 g/ml; toxicity 174.39 g/mL; As well as fingerprint analysis chamomile flowers have active ingredients. Therefore, chamomile flowers can serve as a moderate antioxidant with antimitotic activity.
