Abstract

This research recommends areas for establishing junior high schools in Cugenang, Pacet, and Cipanas (3 districts in Cianjur, Indonesia). It uses a descriptive quantitative. The spatial classification and analysis method with the Union feature Geographic Information System (GIS) overlay technique is applied – considering seven parameters: roads, slope, land use, population, fault, landslide danger, and earthquake danger. All of them are used as indicators to determine the suitability of the area. As a result, a map showing areas with five categories is created. Furthermore, in areas with very suitable categories, the researchers provide further testing with Satellite Imagery reviews to validate the coordinates of priority options. The researchers determined forty-nine priority option coordinates in nineteen villages and adapted these into a number script for user convenience. Supporting educational equality as one of the national priorities for 2030, the researchers are proposing these results.

Abstract

This quantitative study explores the influence of parenting patterns and play environment on preschool children's emotional development, with family characteristics as a moderating factor. The study utilized a path analysis design with structured questionnaires distributed to parents of preschool children in Manado, Tomohon, and Kotamobagu. Data from 90 respondents were analyzed using SmartPLS 4.0 software, measuring variables through Likert-scale responses. The findings demonstrate that parenting patterns and play environments significantly influence children's emotional development, with family characteristics moderating these relationships. The model achieved a high predictive relevance (R² = 0.842; Q² = 0.676), confirming its robust explanatory power. These findings highlight the importance of supportive parenting and enriching play environments, alongside family stability, in fostering healthy emotional development in young children.

Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions of using Jenni AI to improve their ability to write scientific arguments in English classes. Involving 67 students as respondents, this study used a quantitative survey method through Google Forms to collect data related to students' experiences and views on the advantages and disadvantages of Jenni AI. The results showed that most students felt significant benefits from Jenni AI, especially in helping to develop stronger arguments, improve writing structure, and overcome writing obstacles such as writer's block. On the other hand, there were concerns about potential negative impacts, such as over-reliance on technology that could inhibit critical thinking and creativity and the risk of unintentional plagiarism. The findings reflect that while AI can enhance the writing process, its use needs to be balanced with an awareness of the risks involved. The implications of this study emphasize a balanced approach to AI in education, as well as the need for learning strategies that optimally integrate technology without compromising students' independence of thought.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the types and functions of verbal and non-verbal communication within an EFL classroom at SMA YPI Tunas Bangsa Palembang. A qualitative research methodology was employed for this study. The participants included a teacher and students from an English class, selected through purposive sampling. To collect data, the researchers utilized interviews and observations. Subsequently, the data gathered from the interviews and observations were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results indicated that two types of verbal communication are employed by the teacher: oral and written. In addition to verbal communication, teachers typically utilize a variety of non-verbal communication methods, including facial expressions, body language and posture, gestures, eye contact, appearance, touch, and personal space. Furthermore, two primary functions of verbal communication can be identified, while several functions of non-verbal communication can be categorized. In verbal communication, these functions are defined to explain concepts clearly and to enhance students’ understanding. Conversely, the functions of non-verbal communication can be categorized as follows: conveying emotional signals, regulating the teaching mood, maintaining classroom control, expressing appreciation, capturing students’ attention, enhancing students’ focus, providing motivation, and emphasizing key points.

Abstract

Teachers play a critical role when it comes to impacting student achievement. Consequently, the matter of teacher quality is currently being tackled through the implementation of professional development (PD) initiatives. PD in English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching and learning context has gained burgeoning attention in the last decade. However, it is not known how Indonesian EFL teachers perceive and practice PD for their professional development. The objective of this research was to investigate the viewpoints of EFL teachers in Indonesia towards the importance of professional development (PD) and ascertain their existing PD practices, if any. A total of 70 teachers participated in this study by completing the survey, with 37 of them subsequently invited to participate in the forum group discussion (FGD) on a voluntary basis.  The analysis of the collected data revealed that the participants perceived PD as significant for their professional development in three areas: knowledge, pedagogy, and language proficiency. Conversely, the findings also reveal a low degree of participation in professional development activities (PDAs), despite their common engagement in these activities. This study concludes by highlighting the significance of addressing certain areas that require particular attention to effectively support teachers in their continuous professional development endeavors.

Abstract

This study sought to investigate the order of thinking of the reading comprehension questions and tasks of the English textbook for Grade 10 of Indonesian high school. The textbook was written within the framework of the Merdeka Curriculum to promote Higher Order of Thinking (HOTS) and was launched by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia in 2022. Drawing on a Quantitative Content Analysis design by using the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy as a reference for identification of HOTS, the present study analyzed 50 reading questions and tasks of the textbook. The results showed that the majority of the questions and tasks focused on remembering and evaluating the texts and required the reader to recall and comprehend the information that mostly belonged to the category of Lower Order of Thinking (LOTS). There were only few questions and tasks that required the readers to analyze and create based on the information from the text. To some extent, these showed a misalignment between what the Merdeka Curriculum seeks to promote in terms of HOTS and what the textbook realizes.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the effect of final exams on the development of sixth graders in primary school. The ex post facto method was employed in this research to identify and analyze the causal relationship between final exams and various aspects of student development. The researchers purposively sampled, considering student characteristics pertinent to the research objectives. The researchers analyzed the collected data descriptively to paint a clear and detailed picture of students' conditions before, during, and after final exams. The results showed diverse student conditions relevant to their overall development, including cognitive, emotional, social, and physical aspects. These findings highlight the importance of paying attention to the holistic condition of students during the exam period, not just focusing on academic results alone. Proper and comprehensive support during this period is essential to ensure optimal and sustainable student development.
