Abstract

Coastal Lampung has a high level of cultural diversity, one example of which is the Bedana dance. This study aims to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of an interactive digital module integrating the local wisdom of the Coastal Lampung Bedana dance in improving students’ biological literacy. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method with Grade XI science students of a senior high school in Gedongtataan as the research subjects. The research data consisted of qualitative and quantitative data obtained through questionnaires, interviews, and tests. The validation results indicated that the interactive digital module was highly feasible for learning, with material feasibility of 93%, language 78%, media 93%, cultural aspects 89%, and practitioner assessment 100%. Limited trials obtained a positive response of 91%. The implementation test showed an N-Gain score of 0.72, categorized as high. The effectiveness test yielded a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.008, indicating a significant effect on students’ biological literacy. Modul Digital Interaktif Berbasis Kearifan Lokal Tari Bedana dalam Meningkatkan Literasi Biologi Peserta Didik ABSTRAK: Lampung Pesisir memiliki keanekaragaman budaya yang tinggi, salah satunya adalah tari Bedana. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kelayakan dan efektifitas modul digital interaktif bermuatan kearifan lokal tari Bedana Lampung Pesisir terhadap literasi biologi peserta didik. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian dan pengembangan (Research and Development) dengan subjek siswa kelas XI IPA Sekolah Menengah Atas di Gedongtataan. Data penelitian berupa data kualitatif dan kuantitatif yang diperoleh melalui angket, wawancara, dan tes. Hasil validasi menunjukkan modul digital interaktif sangat layak digunakan dengan persentase kelayakan materi 93%, bahasa 78%, media 93%, budaya 89%, dan praktisi 100%. Uji coba terbatas memperoleh respons 91%. Hasil uji penggunaan menunjukkan nilai N-Gain literasi biologi sebesar 0,72 (kategori tinggi). Uji efektivitas memperoleh nilai Sig. (2-tailed) sebesar 0,008, yang menunjukkan pengaruh signifikan terhadap literasi biologi peserta didik.

Abstract

Laboratory practice plays a central role in science education by fostering science process skills (SPS) required for scientific inquiry. During the COVID-19 pandemic, laboratory instruction shifted to online formats, raising questions about the effectiveness of different delivery modes in supporting SPS development. This study analyzed and compared SPS achievement among undergraduate students in Biology Education enrolled in three online laboratory formats at UIN Walisongo Semarang. Using a quantitative descriptive design, 83 students were purposively selected. SPS were measured using a validated 14-item multiple-choice instrument covering nine indicators, supported by observation sheets and semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using triangulation, descriptive statistics, and the Kruskal–Wallis H test. The findings showed that Class B achieved the highest mean SPS score (82.02), followed by Class C (79.59) and Class A (66.67), with significant differences among classes (p = 0.020). Varied project-based assignments were more effective in promoting SPS in online laboratory learning. Keterampilan Proses Sains Mahasiswa S1 Biologi pada Berbagai Format Praktikum Daring: Sebuah Studi Deskriptif Kuantitatif ABSTRAK: Praktikum laboratorium memegang peran penting dalam pendidikan sains karena mengembangkan keterampilan proses sains (KPS) yang dibutuhkan dalam inkuiri ilmiah. Selama pandemi COVID-19, pelaksanaan praktikum beralih ke format daring, sehingga memunculkan pertanyaan mengenai efektivitas berbagai mode pembelajaran dalam mendukung pengembangan KPS. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis dan membandingkan pencapaian KPS mahasiswa Pendidikan Biologi yang mengikuti tiga format praktikum daring di UIN Walisongo Semarang. Penelitian menggunakan desain deskriptif kuantitatif dengan melibatkan 83 mahasiswa yang dipilih melalui purposive sampling. KPS diukur menggunakan instrumen pilihan ganda tervalidasi sebanyak 14 butir yang mencakup sembilan indikator, didukung lembar observasi dan wawancara semi-terstruktur. Data dianalisis menggunakan triangulasi, statistik deskriptif, dan uji Kruskal-Wallis H. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Kelas B memperoleh skor rata-rata KPS tertinggi (82,02), diikuti Kelas C (79,59) dan Kelas A (66,67), dengan perbedaan yang signifikan antarkelas (p = 0,020). Penugasan berbasis proyek yang bervariasi terbukti lebih efektif dalam meningkatkan KPS pada praktikum biologi daring.

Abstract

Callus culture is a promising biotechnological approach for the sustainable production of secondary metabolites, including capsaicin, without dependence on seasonal factors or large-scale cultivation. This study investigated the effect of glucose concentration on callus growth derived from hypocotyl and cotyledon explants of Capsicum frutescens L. seedlings. A Completely Randomised Design with two factors and three replications was applied using Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 2 ppm 2,4-D and 0.5 ppm kinetin, and three glucose concentrations: 30, 40, and 50 g/L. Observed parameters included callus initiation time, colour, texture, and wet weight. Data were analysed using two-way ANOVA and Duncan's Multiple Range Test at P < 0.05. Glucose at 30 g/L produced the fastest initiation and highest wet weight in hypocotyl-derived callus, whereas 40 g/L was optimal for cotyledon-derived callus. These findings provide a basis for optimising tissue culture protocols to support capsaicin production in C. frutescens. Pertumbuhan dan Perkembangan Kalus Cabai Rawit (Capsicum frutescens L.) sebagai Respon terhadap Konsentrasi Glukosa dan Sumber Eksplan: Implikasinya terhadap Produksi Kapsaisin melalui Kultur Jaringan ABSTRAK: Kultur kalus merupakan pendekatan bioteknologi yang menjanjikan untuk produksi metabolit sekunder, termasuk kapsaisin, secara berkelanjutan tanpa bergantung pada faktor musiman maupun budidaya skala luas. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji pengaruh konsentrasi glukosa terhadap pertumbuhan kalus yang berasal dari eksplan hipokotil dan kotiledon Capsicum frutescens L. Rancangan Acak Lengkap dengan dua faktor dan tiga ulangan digunakan pada media Murashige dan Skoog yang diperkaya 2 ppm 2,4-D dan 0,5 ppm kinetin, serta tiga konsentrasi glukosa, yaitu 30, 40, dan 50 g/L. Parameter yang diamati meliputi waktu inisiasi kalus, warna, tekstur, dan berat basah. Data dianalisis menggunakan ANOVA dua arah dan uji Duncan pada taraf P < 0,05. Glukosa 30 g/L menghasilkan inisiasi tercepat dan berat basah tertinggi pada kalus hipokotil, sedangkan 40 g/L optimal untuk kalus kotiledon. Temuan ini menjadi dasar optimasi kultur jaringan untuk mendukung produksi kapsaisin pada C. frutescens.

Abstract

Environmental literacy plays an important role in developing students’ awareness and responsibility toward environmental sustainability, particularly in response to global ecological challenges. However, students’ environmental literacy levels remain relatively moderate, indicating the need for more contextual and meaningful learning approaches. This study examined the environmental literacy of science education students in relation to peatland and mangrove ecosystems. A quantitative approach with a one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. The participants were science education students at Muhammadiyah University of Riau enrolled in an environmental education course. Data were collected using an environmental literacy test adapted from the MSELS instrument, covering four domains: knowledge, cognitive skills, attitudes, and behavior. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that students’ environmental literacy was categorized as moderate, with an overall score of 139. These findings suggest that peatland- and mangrove-based learning supports environmental awareness, although more comprehensive context-based strategies are still needed. Evaluasi Literasi Lingkungan Mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan IPA Universitas Muhammadiyah Riau pada Ekosistem Gambut dan Mangrove (GAMA) ABSTRAK: Literasi lingkungan memegang peran penting dalam membentuk kesadaran dan tanggung jawab mahasiswa terhadap keberlanjutan lingkungan, terutama di tengah tantangan ekologis global. Namun, tingkat literasi lingkungan mahasiswa masih tergolong sedang, sehingga diperlukan pendekatan pembelajaran yang lebih kontekstual dan bermakna. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji literasi lingkungan mahasiswa pendidikan IPA dalam konteks ekosistem lahan gambut dan mangrove. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain one-group pretest–posttest. Partisipan penelitian adalah mahasiswa Pendidikan IPA Universitas Muhammadiyah Riau yang menempuh mata kuliah pendidikan lingkungan. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan tes literasi lingkungan yang diadaptasi dari instrumen MSELS, yang mencakup empat domain, yaitu pengetahuan, keterampilan kognitif, sikap, dan perilaku. Data dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan inferensial. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa literasi lingkungan mahasiswa berada pada kategori sedang dengan skor keseluruhan 139. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran berbasis lahan gambut dan mangrove mendukung peningkatan kesadaran lingkungan, meskipun masih diperlukan strategi pembelajaran kontekstual yang lebih komprehensif.

Abstract

Biology learning at the senior high school level often struggles in explain abstract concepts, particularly the structure and function of the human excretory system. Reliance on conventional printed textbooks with static two-dimensional images may hinder students' understanding, leading to misconceptions and low learning motivation. This study aimed to develop and validate an augmented reality (AR)-integrated printed handout on the kidney excretory system material for Grade XI students at SMA Muhammadiyah Jember, Indonesia. The study employed a Research and Development approach using the ADDIE model. The handout was designed in Canva, and the three-dimensional AR kidney model was developed in Unity and accessed via barcode markers on students' smartphones. Product validity was assessed by two university lecturers and one biology teacher using a 30-item validation instrument. The product achieved an overall validity score of 85.28% and was categorized as very valid, indicating that it is feasible and pedagogically appropriate for biology learning. Pengembangan dan Validasi Handout Berbasis Augmented Reality pada Materi Sistem Ekskresi Ginjal untuk Siswa SMA Kelas XI ABSTRAK: Pembelajaran biologi di tingkat sekolah menengah atas sering menghadapi kesulitan dalam menjelaskan konsep-konsep abstrak, khususnya struktur dan fungsi sistem ekskresi manusia. Ketergantungan pada buku teks cetak konvensional dengan gambar dua dimensi statis dapat menghambat pemahaman siswa, sehingga menimbulkan miskonsepsi dan rendahnya motivasi belajar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan dan memvalidasi handout cetak terintegrasi augmented reality (AR) pada materi sistem ekskresi ginjal untuk siswa kelas XI di SMA Muhammadiyah Jember, Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan Research and Development dengan model ADDIE. Handout dirancang menggunakan Canva, sedangkan model ginjal AR tiga dimensi dikembangkan menggunakan Unity dan diakses melalui marker barcode pada telepon pintar siswa. Validitas produk dinilai oleh dua dosen universitas dan satu guru biologi menggunakan instrumen validasi 30 butir. Produk memperoleh skor validitas keseluruhan sebesar 85,28% dan dikategorikan sangat valid, yang menunjukkan bahwa media tersebut layak dan sesuai secara pedagogis untuk pembelajaran biologi.

Abstract

Arcangelisia flava (L.) Merr., an endemic Indonesian forest plant, is traditionally consumed as an aphrodisiac by the Enggano Island community, yet its safety profile remains poorly documented. This study evaluated the nephrotoxic potential of A. flava stem extract using a murine model. Fifteen ICR mice were randomly assigned to a control group receiving distilled water and a treatment group receiving 200 mg/kg body weight of ethanolic stem extract orally for 14 days. Kidney tissues were processed for hematoxylin-eosin staining and semi-quantitative histopathological scoring. Compared with controls, treated mice showed higher damage scores in the glomerulus, proximal tubule, and distal tubule, along with a reduction in glomerular diameter. Histopathological findings included podocytopenia, widened Bowman’s space, proximal tubular brush border loss, apoptotic changes, and ablation of macula densa and distal tubular epithelial cells. These findings indicate nephrotoxic activity of A. flava stem extract and highlight the need for dosage standardization before use. Bukti Histopatologis Nefrotoksisitas pada Tikus yang Diberikan Arcangelisia flava (L.) Merr. Ekstrak Batang dari Pulau Enggano ABSTRAK: Arcangelisia flava (L.) Merr. merupakan tumbuhan endemik hutan Indonesia yang secara tradisional dimanfaatkan sebagai afrodisiak oleh masyarakat Pulau Enggano, namun aspek keamanannya masih belum terdokumentasi dengan baik. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengevaluasi potensi nefrotoksik ekstrak batang A. flava menggunakan model mencit. Sebanyak 15 ekor mencit jantan galur ICR dibagi acak ke dalam kelompok kontrol yang diberi akuades dan kelompok perlakuan yang diberi ekstrak etanol batang A. flava dosis 200 mg/kg bobot badan secara oral selama 14 hari. Jaringan ginjal diproses dengan pewarnaan hematoksilin-eosin dan dianalisis menggunakan skor kerusakan histopatologi semi-kuantitatif. Dibandingkan kontrol, kelompok perlakuan menunjukkan skor kerusakan lebih tinggi pada glomerulus, tubulus proksimal, dan tubulus distal, serta penurunan diameter glomerulus. Temuan histopatologi meliputi podositopenia, pelebaran ruang Bowman, hilangnya brush border tubulus proksimal, perubahan apoptosis, serta ablasi makula densa dan sel epitel tubulus distal. Hasil ini menunjukkan aktivitas nefrotoksik ekstrak batang A. flava.

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has increased interest in sustainable bioresources as alternative antimicrobial candidates. This study mapped the bioactive compound profile of wild sugar palm (Arenga pinnata Merr.) fruit peel waste collected from the Wan Abdul Rahman Forest area, Lampung, Indonesia. It established a preliminary chemical basis for its antimicrobial potential. Qualitative phytochemical screening of a 96% ethanol extract confirmed the presence of flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, saponins, steroids/triterpenoids, alkaloids, amino acids, and reducing sugars, indicating a diverse spectrum of secondary metabolites associated with antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. GC–MS analysis of methanol–chloroform (8:2) and chloroform extracts identified 31 compounds, dominated by 1-eicosanol, 9,12-octadecadienoic acid methyl ester, 9-octadecenoic acid methyl ester, octadecanoic acid methyl ester, hexadecanoic acid methyl ester, and 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid diethyl ester. These findings provide a chemical baseline supporting sugar palm fruit peel waste as a promising local source of value-added natural bioactive compounds. Skrining Fitokimia dan Karakterisasi GC-MS Ekstrak Kulit Buah Arenga pinnata Merr. Menggunakan Etanol, Metanol, dan Kloroform sebagai Kandidat Antimikroba Alami ABSTRAK: Resistensi antimikroba (AMR) telah meningkatkan pencarian sumber hayati berkelanjutan sebagai kandidat antimikroba alternatif. Penelitian ini bertujuan memetakan profil senyawa bioaktif limbah kulit buah aren liar (Arenga pinnata Merr.) yang dikumpulkan dari kawasan hutan Wan Abdul Rahman, Lampung, Indonesia, serta menyusun dasar kimia awal untuk menilai potensinya sebagai sumber antimikroba alami. Skrining fitokimia kualitatif terhadap ekstrak etanol 96% mengonfirmasi keberadaan flavonoid, fenolik, tanin, saponin, steroid/triterpenoid, alkaloid, asam amino, dan gula pereduksi, yang menunjukkan keragaman metabolit sekunder yang berkaitan dengan aktivitas antimikroba dan antioksidan. Analisis GC–MS terhadap ekstrak metanol–kloroform (8:2) dan kloroform mengidentifikasi 31 senyawa, yang didominasi oleh 1-eicosanol, metil ester asam 9,12-oktadekadienoat, metil ester asam 9-oktadekenoat, metil ester asam oktadekanoat, metil ester asam heksadekanoat, dan dietil ester asam 1,2-benzenadikarboksilat. Temuan ini memberikan dasar kimia awal yang mendukung limbah kulit buah aren sebagai sumber lokal senyawa bioaktif alami bernilai tambah.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of integrating Self-Directed Learning (SDL) and Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in enhancing students' scientific reasoning skills in biology education. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was employed, combining a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design with qualitative exploration. The participants were 30 undergraduate students in biology education. Quantitative data were collected using a scientific reasoning test, while qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and reflective writings. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ scientific reasoning scores (p < 0.001) with a very large effect size (Cohen’s d = 2.35). Qualitative findings indicated that learning independence, authentic problem-solving, metacognitive reflection, and scientific collaboration contributed to this improvement. The integration of SDL and PjBL fosters a student-centered learning environment that supports cognitive and metacognitive development. This study offers an integrated pedagogical model and practical implications for enhancing higher-order thinking skills in biology education. Sebanyak 30 mahasiswa berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Data kuantitatif diperoleh melalui tes penalaran ilmiah, sedangkan data kualitatif dikumpulkan melalui wawancara semi-terstruktur dan refleksi tertulis. Hasil menunjukkan adanya peningkatan signifikan pada skor penalaran ilmiah mahasiswa (p < 0,001) dengan ukuran efek sangat besar (Cohen’s d = 2,35). Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the antibacterial activity of ethanolic extracts of bidens pilosa L. leaves and ginger rhizomes, both individually and in combination, and to evaluate their interaction against the growth of Escherichia coli in vitro. This study was a laboratory experiment employing a posttest-only control group design. The extracts were obtained through ethanol maceration. Antibacterial activity was tested using the agar well diffusion method to measure inhibition zone diameter, the dilution method to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC), and the checkerboard assay to assess extract interaction through the Fractional Inhibitory Concentration Index (FICI). The ethanolic extracts of bidens pilosa L. leaves and ginger rhizomes exhibited antibacterial activity against E. coli, with stronger inhibition observed at higher concentrations. The extraction yields of ketul leaves and ginger rhizomes were 9.4% and 12.8%, respectively. The MIC values of ketul leaf and ginger rhizome extracts were 25 mg/mL and 12.5 mg/mL, respectively, while their combination decreased to 6.25 mg/mL. The combined extracts also produced larger inhibition zones than the single extracts. A FICI value of 0.75 indicated an additive interaction. The combination of ethanolic extracts of bidens pilosa L. leaves and ginger rhizomes has potential as a natural antibacterial agent against Escherichia coli. Aktivitas Antibakteri dan Interaksi Ekstrak Etanol Daun Bidens pilosa L. dan Rimpang Jahe terhadap Pertumbuhan Escherichia coli secara In Vitro ABSTRAK: Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak etanol daun bidens pilosa L. dan rimpang jahe, baik secara tunggal maupun kombinasi, serta menilai interaksinya terhadap pertumbuhan Escherichia coli secara in vitro. Penelitian ini merupakan eksperimen laboratorium dengan rancangan posttest-only control group design. Ekstrak diperoleh melalui maserasi menggunakan etanol. Uji antibakteri dilakukan dengan metode difusi sumuran untuk mengukur diameter zona hambat, metode dilusi untuk menentukan Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) dan Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC), serta checkerboard assay untuk menilai interaksi kombinasi ekstrak melalui Fractional Inhibitory Concentration Index (FICI). Ekstrak etanol daun bidens pilosa L. dan rimpang jahe menunjukkan aktivitas antibakteri terhadap E. coli, dengan daya hambat yang meningkat seiring peningkatan konsentrasi. Rendemen ekstrak daun ketul dan jahe masing-masing sebesar 9,4% dan 12,8%. Nilai MIC ekstrak daun ketul dan jahe berturut-turut sebesar 25 mg/mL dan 12,5 mg/mL, sedangkan kombinasi keduanya menurun menjadi 6,25 mg/ml. Kombinasi ekstrak juga menghasilkan zona hambat lebih besar dibandingkan ekstrak tunggal. Nilai FICI sebesar 0,75 menunjukkan interaksi aditif. Kesimpulan singkat: Kombinasi ekstrak etanol daun bidens pilosa L. dan rimpang jahe berpotensi dikembangkan sebagai agen antibakterii terhadap Escherichia coli.

Abstract

The development of students’ critical thinking skills has become a central objective in contemporary science education, yet conventional instructional approaches often fail to actively engage learners in higher-order cognitive processes. This study aims to examine the effects of Construct 2 game-based learning media and learning styles on junior high school students’ critical thinking skills. A quantitative quasi-experimental design with a 2 × 3 factorial structure was employed, involving 67 seventh-grade students divided into an experimental group (Construct 2) and a control group (video-based learning). Data were collected using a validated critical thinking test and a learning style questionnaire, and analyzed using two-way ANOVA. The results revealed a significant main effect of learning media, with students in the game-based group achieving higher critical thinking scores than those in the video-based group. A significant effect of learning styles was also identified, indicating differences in critical thinking performance across visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. However, no significant interaction effect was found between learning media and learning styles. These findings suggest that interactive game-based learning provides a more effective approach to enhancing students’ critical thinking skills and can be applied consistently across diverse learner characteristics. The study contributes to the integration of educational technology and cognitive development by highlighting the role of interactive media in fostering higher-order thinking. Perbedaan Keterampilan Berpikir Kritis Siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama Ditinjau dari Gaya Belajar Menggunakan Media Game Construct 2 pada Mata Pelajaran IPA Biologi ABSTRAK: Pengembangan keterampilan berpikir kritis siswa menjadi salah satu tujuan utama dalam pembelajaran sains modern, namun pendekatan pembelajaran konvensional sering kali belum mampu mendorong keterlibatan kognitif yang optimal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh media pembelajaran berbasis game Construct 2 dan gaya belajar terhadap keterampilan berpikir kritis siswa sekolah menengah pertama. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain quasi-eksperimen dan rancangan faktorial 2 × 3 yang melibatkan 67 siswa kelas VII yang dibagi ke dalam kelompok eksperimen (Construct 2) dan kelompok kontrol (media video). Data dikumpulkan melalui tes berpikir kritis yang telah divalidasi serta angket gaya belajar, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan two-way ANOVA. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya pengaruh signifikan media pembelajaran, di mana siswa yang belajar menggunakan media berbasis game memperoleh skor berpikir kritis lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan siswa yang menggunakan media video. Selain itu, terdapat pengaruh signifikan gaya belajar terhadap keterampilan berpikir kritis, yang menunjukkan adanya perbedaan kemampuan berdasarkan karakteristik visual, auditori, dan kinestetik. Namun demikian, tidak ditemukan interaksi yang signifikan antara media pembelajaran dan gaya belajar.
