Abstract

This article aims to explain the Islamic character regeneration model in Islamic boarding schools and the strategy of the kyai as the highest leader in developing Islamic character regeneration for students. The location of this research, namely Arrisalah Modern Islamic Boarding School Ponorogo, is unique from other sites because of the curriculum or general subjects at the Islamic boarding school, which is famous for its salaf curriculum, which is integrated with Islamic values typical of Islamic boarding schools. This study uses an interpretive paradigm through a qualitative approach, a case study type. The primary data were obtained from caregivers, madrasa heads, teachers, students, and other parties involved, using data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The analysis technique used is the Miles and Huberman data reduction models, data display, and verification. Checking data validity using triangulation: credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. The study results show that the cadre model at Arrisalah Modern Islamic Boarding School is a reduction or transfer of the Islamic boarding school's Islamic character and values. The kyai's strategy in creating cadres with Islamic character is actualized in several aspects, including the kyai's example, curriculum, 'Ala Manhaj Rabbaniy education system, organization, Pondok discipline, and compulsory service. So, this research provides a lot of valuable insights into the cadre model in Islamic boarding schools, and it cannot be denied that there are still various opportunities for more in-depth and broad future research.

Abstract

One of the most common obstacles students face when solving proportion problems is their tendency to use the addition concept rather than the multiplication concept. This study aims to analyze and characterize the proportional thinking characteristics of students who solve direct proportion problems. The research employs a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive methodology. The subjects were three eighth-grade students. Data was collected in two stages using supplementary instruments, including direct proportion questions and interviews. In the initial stage, students answered questions orally while researchers observed their activities and took notes, which were confirmed during interviews. In the second stage, task-based interviews were used to investigate the students' proportional thinking processes. Data analysis involved examining the students' work and interview transcripts, which were then coded to identify noteworthy findings. The study identified three characteristics of proportional thinking: (1) additive different thinking; (2) multiplication continuation thinking; and (3) multiplication proximity thinking. The foundation for solving direct proportion problems lies in students' understanding of the relationship between two quantities in a ratio. Teachers should prioritize the explicit disclosure of students' cognitive processes related to the subject matter. Additional studies are recommended to further investigate students' cognitive processes.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of the school zoning system from a justice perspective. Through this research, we could understand how far social justice has been obtained during the zoning system's implementation and the future challenges. The research questions are: (1) Why did the government implement a zoning system? (2) How was the zoning system implemented? (3) How did school principals and history teachers respond to changes in student’s academic quality as a result of the application of the zoning system? The research was conducted qualitatively with a case study approach in the former residency area of Surakarta and the Special Province of Yogyakarta to answer the questions. The data was collected through document analysis, interviews, and observation. The results show that implementing the school zoning system in the New Students Admission was relatively successful in creating justice, especially in directing students to get schools based on their residence. The challenge occurred in the student's educational process. Principals and teachers lack understanding of the equity spirit that underlies the implementation of the school zoning system and gives equal treatment to all students. As a result, students with less prior academic ability will be left behind those with good or excellent prior academic skills. Further research that can be explored from the results of this study is to explore how the impact of the zoning system in other regions may have different results from the Surakarta and Yogyakarta regencies.

Abstract

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is an effort to realise the goals listed in the SDGs. ESD is an alternative approach to the field of education to prepare a generation that has an awareness of sustainable life. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of the application of the problem-based learning model on students' critical thinking skills on SDGs-oriented environmental pollution materials. The research method employed was a quasi-experimental with the control group pretest-posttest design. In determining the sample, the researchers employed purposive sampling techniques by considering the differences in academic achievement, differences between the two classes, and differences in the number of students. Therefore, class VII B with 27 students was chosen as the experimental class and class VII E with 25 students was chosen as the control class. The types of data used were quantitative. The pretest-posttest in the experimental class obtained an N-gain score of 0.58 in the medium criterion. The normality test in the experimental class obtained a score of Sig 0.48, which was lower than 0.05. Conversely, the control class obtained a score of Sig 0.20, which was lower than 0.05. The homogeneity result was Sig 0.12, which was lower than 0.05. The hypothesis testing using the independent-sample t-test, a Sig (2-tailed) value of 0.00 was obtained, and the results of the effect size test were 1.77 with the high criterion. Therefore, there was a significant effect of using the SDG-oriented PBL model towards critical thinking skills on the topic of environmental pollution.

Abstract

This research aims to provide empirical evidence on the effectiveness of Open Educational Resources (OER) in facilitating transformative learning experiences that enhance students' creative thinking skills. A quantitative approach was employed for the study, wherein two groups, experimental and control, underwent pre-tests and post-tests to measure variables such as fluency, flexibility, elaboration, and evaluation of their creative thinking abilities. The study revealed significant differences between pre-test and post-test scores for both groups, particularly in the indicators of flexibility and evaluation. However, diverse outcomes were observed when examining n-gain scores across all indicators of creative thinking skills, suggesting that the effectiveness of OER in facilitating transformative learning varies depending on the specific creative thinking indicators measured. The research emphasizes that while OER can facilitate transformative learning processes, it may not yield uniform results across all dimensions of creative thinking. The obtained results indicate no significant difference in flexibility. Contradictory conditions can be observed in fluency, elaboration, and evaluation indicators, showing significant differences. Therefore, educators should adopt varied approaches when integrating OER into their curricula to maximize the potential benefits of enhancing students' creative thinking skills. For future research, it is highly recommended to focus on the effectiveness of OER based on the type of content or subject matter taught to identify the most effective sources. Further research is also needed to compare the effectiveness of OER with other teaching methods.

Abstract

Preparedness of all components of the school community, including teachers, is essential to build a school's resilience to disasters. This study aims to: (1) examine the geological disaster preparedness level of Early Childhood Education (ECE) teachers in Cisompet District, Garut Regency, and (2) investigate the effectiveness of education on geological disaster preparedness for ECE teachers. This descriptive quantitative study involved 86 ECE teachers recruited using convenient sampling. Data collection was carried out using a pre-test and post-test questionnaire. The results revealed that the teachers' geological disaster preparedness index was 68.94 (ready), which comprised parameters of knowledge and attitudes, emergency response plans, disaster warning systems, and resource mobilization. A geological disaster preparedness education program was conducted for ECE teachers, covering types of geological disasters, potential disasters in Cisompet District, and the establishment of disaster-safe schools. Based on the increase in the percentage of correct answers between the pre-test and post-test, the geological disaster preparedness education for ECE teachers was deemed relatively effective. However, the study found that there is no disaster warning system in either schools or community areas, despite the high disaster risk index. Follow-up activities, particularly through hands-on practice such as disaster evacuation simulations, formulating school disaster contingency plans, and developing learning innovations with disaster content for young children, are still needed.

Abstract

This study aims to determine and describe the comparison before and after the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) on the French reading comprehension abilities of students in the French Education Study Program, measured by reading level indicators equivalent to the B2 level in the CEFR. The method used is quantitative, with a quasi-experimental research design. The population consisted of all students in this study program, totaling 186 students in the odd semester of the 2023/2024 Academic Year. The sample was selected through purposive sampling, comprising 20 students at the B2 level. The highest score obtained during the pretest was 77.5, while the highest posttest score was 75. The average student score during the pretest was 54, but it dropped to 50 in the posttest. The t-test results showed a 2-tailed significance value of more than 0.05, indicating no significant influence on the ability to understand French text after implementing PjBL. Based on the questionnaire, students reported increased motivation to read French texts, better understanding of sentences, and improved ability to find the main idea. They also noted enhancements in teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking, although they still required guidance from lecturers. Despite the positive reception and impact of the PjBL model on learning, there was no significant effect on students' French reading comprehension abilities after its implementation. Further research should investigate the factors that influence students' reading comprehension results.

Abstract

This research and development (R&D) activity aims to develop a reliable, practical, and effective inquiry learning model that includes preliminary research, product design and development, and assessment. In this development process, the stages outlined by Plomp and Nieveen are adopted. Forty pharmacy students from the pharmacy study program of a state university in Malang, East Java, took part in learning during the 2021-2022 academic year. A questionnaire with Likert Scale 4 categories is a research tool. The expert validation test revealed that "Eligible" is the average result of the validator's assessment criteria. It is possible to immediately implement product results that reach 90.25% on developed media and 89.60% for digital teaching materials with interactive digital flip-book concepts. In terms of the practicality of the products developed, the average V values achieved were 0.86, 0.92, and 0.85, respectively. The results of hypothesis testing in the implementation show that Sig. value (Sig. (2-tailed)) was 0.002, which is smaller than the 0.05 significance level. Accordingly, the research findings confirm a notable improvement in students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills through the implementation of the inquiry learning model through multimedia.
