Abstract

Background: Insufficient protein intake or specific patterns of plasma amino acid levels during pregnancy has been associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Studies in non-pregnant women have reported an association between protein intake and amino acid levels, however, data in pregnant women remain limited. Jambi, a region rich in freshwater fish, has a traditional dishes based on fish, which may affect maternal protein adequacy. This study aimed to assess protein sufficiency intake, plasma essential amino acid levels, and the relationship between fish consumption and protein intake among first-trimester pregnant women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2022 involving pregnant women at 9-16 weeks of gestation in Jambi, Indonesia, selected through purposive sampling. Protein intake and fish consumption data were collected using Food Frequency Questionnaires. Plasma essential amino acid levels were measured using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Bivariate analyses were performed using Mann-Whitney and Chi-square tests. Results: Among 30 participants, 23.3% had insufficient protein intake and had lower plasma essential amino acid levels. Lysine levels showed a statistically significant difference between groups (p=0.010). Women with adequate protein intake reported significant higher fish consumption, particularly of freshwater fish (p=0.033).Conclusion: Adequate protein intake during early pregnancy is related to higher plasma essential amino acid levels. Consumption of local freshwater fish contributes to maintaining sufficient protein intake. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating healthy dietary patterns and locally sourced nutrient-rich foods into prenatal care to support maternal wellness and long-term health outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health issue due to its high prevalence and significant impact on public health. Early detection of suspected TB cases is essential for controlling its spread and reducing mortality. However, various challenges, including low public awareness and inadequate screening efforts, hinder effective case identification. This study aims to analyze the barriers to detecting suspected pulmonary TB cases and propose strategies to enhance case detection efforts. Method: This study employs a quantitative descriptive approach using a questionnaire distributed to 30 TB patients and suspected cases. Data were analyzed using statistical methods to assess knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to TB case detection.Result: The findings indicate that 56.6% of respondents have poor knowledge about TB, while only 43.4% have good knowledge. Regarding attitudes, 56% of respondents showed poor attitudes towards TB detection and treatment-seeking behavior. Additionally, TB case detection has not met the target, with only 81.9% (250 out of 305 cases) of suspected TB cases identified, and 59.6% (34 out of 57 cases) of TB patients currently undergoing treatment. These results highlight the need for improved public awareness and more effective case detection efforts. Conclusion: To enhance TB case detection, this study recommends increasing public awareness through targeted educational programs, distributing informational materials, and strengthening community-based screening efforts. Abstract

HIV/AIDS infection (ODHIV) remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia. One of the main challenges in managing HIV/AIDS is adherence to antiretroviral (ARV) therapy among ODHIV. Low adherence can lead to drug resistance, decreased quality of life, and increased risk of virus transmission. Factors influencing ARV adherence include stigma, discrimination, and the knowledge of ODHIV about the therapy. Education was conducted through group counseling, starting with a pre-test to assess participants' knowledge about HIV treatment. After the pre-test, a counseling session on "The Importance of ARV Adherence for People Living with HIV" was held, concluding with a post-test. A total of 27 participants took part in this activity, with the majority being male (59%) and the largest age group being 20-30 years (41%). Pre-test results indicated that 44% of participants had a low initial understanding. However, post-test results showed a significant improvement; 37% of participants scored in the 71-80 range, and another 37% scored in the 81-90 range. These results indicate that the education provided successfully enhanced participants' understanding of the importance of ARV adherence. Despite the improvements, challenges remain regarding adherence, particularly for those lacking family support. This highlights the need for additional strategies to enhance social support for ODHIV. Participation in this activity was predominantly male, with most participants having a high school education. The post-test results confirmed a significant increase in understanding compared to the pre-test. Puskesmas and community health workers should conduct regular monitoring and evaluation of ARV adherence to prevent loss to follow-up in treatment.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a growing public health concern worldwide, including in Indonesia. The Indonesian Chronic Disease Management Program (PROLANIS) aims to empower individuals and families affected by DM through community-based health education. This study employed an educational intervention delivered through a counseling session on the importance of family medicine principles and dietary management for DM patients. A pre-test was administered to assess the participants' baseline knowledge, followed by the educational session, and concluded with a post-test. A total of 37 participants were involved in this activity, the majority of whom were middle-aged women with a senior high school level of education. Pre-test results indicated that 57% of participants had a low level of understanding. However, the post-test revealed a significant improvement, with 76% of participants achieving a score in the 6-10 range. Nevertheless, some participants still required further guidance. Despite the observed increase in knowledge, the application of family medicine principles within the PROLANIS program in the working area of the Rawasari Community Health Center remains suboptimal. The active engagement of participants during the question-and-answer session highlighted the need for additional support in implementing these principles. The educational program successfully enhanced participants' understanding of diabetes management. However, continuous monitoring and periodic evaluation by the Community Health Center and community health workers (cadres) are necessary to improve the application of family medicine principles within the PROLANIS program in its designated area.
