Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Indonesia has the highest rate of cervical cancer in Southeast Asia. However, early detection through Visual Inspection of Acetate Acid (VIA) among Women of Childbearing Age (WCA) in Indonesia, including Jambi City, remains low. This research aims to determine knowledge and attitudes toward cervical cancer prevention, and the willingness undergo VIA examination among married WCA at the Kenali Besar Public Health Center in Jambi City. Methods: An observational-analytical study with a cross-sectional design was conducted using questionnaires. 110 samples were chosen by accidental sampling technique and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Most participants were in early adulthood (52.7%), had secondary education (50.9%), were unemployed (59.1%), had sufficient knowledge (40%) and attitudes (51.8%), but low willingness for VIA (47.3%). The main reason for not undergoing VIA was the absence of symptoms (22.7%). Most who had VIA had only been tested once (70%), with all results negative (100%). Conclusion: The willingness to undergo VIA screening is still low. Increasing the VIA screening coverage requires the improvement of knowledge about cervical cancer and attitudes toward cervical cancer prevention through effective health promotion. Keywords: cervical cancer; women of childbearing age; VIA test; knowledge; attitudes; willingness; behavior

Abstract

Introduction: Exposure to harmful substances in food is a significant factor contributing to stunting and nutritional problems in children, as it impacts their growth and development. While healthy diets are well-documented, direct links between dietary intake and harmful substance exposure are less explored. This study investigates key risk factors influencing such exposure in children. Objectives: This study aimed to analyses the impact of nutritional status, dietary intake, and exposure to harmful substances in children.Materials And Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 780 children in 30 elementary Schools, collected data on dietary intake, nutritional status, and laboratory testing for harmful substances like borax, formalin, Rhodamine B, and cyclamate using Qualitative Test Kit. Food samples were obtained from school vendors and commonly consumed items. Data were analysed using Chi-Square tests and binary logistic regression to assess the relationships between variables. Results: Among the children, 50% were aged 8–9 years, and 53.8% were female. Most had good nutritional status (69.2%), and 88.2% had sufficient dietary intake. However, 69.1% were exposed to harmful substances in food. Poor nutritional status increased exposure risk by 3.11 times (PR = 3.11; 95% CI: 1.75 - 5.51; p = 0.000), and insufficient dietary intake raised it by 13.26 times (PR = 13.26; 95% CI: 8.37 - 21.02; p = 0.000).Conclusion: A child’s nutrition and food safety are deeply connected. Poor nutrition makes children more susceptible to harmful substances, highlighting the importance of ensuring both a healthy diet and stricter food safety measures. By prioritizing better nutrition and safer food choices, we can help protect children's health and support their growth.

Abstract

Preeclampsia is a condition of hypertension occurring after 20 weeks of gestation, accompanied by organ dysfunction and proteinuria. Preeclampsia is classified into Early Onset Preeclampsia (EOPE), which occurs before 34 weeks of gestation, and Late Onset Preeclampsia (LOPE), which occurs after 34 weeks of gestation. EOPE carries a higher risk of maternal and fetal complications compared to LOPE. This research aims to analyze the complications in mothers and fetuses with EOPE and LOPE that were terminated at RSUD Raden Mattaher Jambi between 2020 and 2022. This descriptive research was conducted in the Medical Records Department of RSUD Raden Mattaher, Jambi, involving 82 patients who experienced both maternal and fetal complications with EOPE and LOPE that were terminated. Sampling was carried out using the total sampling technique based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results of this research showed that the prevalence of EOPE was 69.5%, while LOPE accounted for 30.5%. Maternal complications were more commonly found in EOPE cases, including eclampsia (42.1%), HELLP syndrome (36%), premature rupture of membranes (14%), placental abruption (14%), and maternal mortality (5.3%). Fetal complications in EOPE included Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) (10.5%), prematurity (26.3%), low birth weight (29.8%), Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) (10.5%), and Intrauterine Fetal Death (IUFD) (1.8%). The perinatal mortality rate in EOPE was 7%, with asphyxia recorded in 12.3% of cases. EOPE is more frequently encountered than LOPE and is associated with more severe maternal and fetal complications. Early detection and management of EOPE are crucial to reducing complications and improving pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Insufficient protein intake or specific patterns of plasma amino acid levels during pregnancy has been associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Studies in non-pregnant women have reported an association between protein intake and amino acid levels, however, data in pregnant women remain limited. Jambi, a region rich in freshwater fish, has a traditional dishes based on fish, which may affect maternal protein adequacy. This study aimed to assess protein sufficiency intake, plasma essential amino acid levels, and the relationship between fish consumption and protein intake among first-trimester pregnant women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2022 involving pregnant women at 9-16 weeks of gestation in Jambi, Indonesia, selected through purposive sampling. Protein intake and fish consumption data were collected using Food Frequency Questionnaires. Plasma essential amino acid levels were measured using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Bivariate analyses were performed using Mann-Whitney and Chi-square tests. Results: Among 30 participants, 23.3% had insufficient protein intake and had lower plasma essential amino acid levels. Lysine levels showed a statistically significant difference between groups (p=0.010). Women with adequate protein intake reported significant higher fish consumption, particularly of freshwater fish (p=0.033).Conclusion: Adequate protein intake during early pregnancy is related to higher plasma essential amino acid levels. Consumption of local freshwater fish contributes to maintaining sufficient protein intake. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating healthy dietary patterns and locally sourced nutrient-rich foods into prenatal care to support maternal wellness and long-term health outcomes.
