Abstract

The use of habitat by fish is closely related to efforts to find the best conditions for the survival of these fish. This study aims to analyze the habitat preferences of Striped snakehead in Rawa Aopa waters, Southeast Sulawesi. This research was conducted from November 2018 to February 2019 in the waters of Swamp Aopa Southeast Sulawesi. Fish collection using traps. The constancy and fidelity index determined the preference of striped snakehead for habitat type. A total of 1024 striped snakehead fish were caught during the study with a length range of 200,0-420,0 mm and 69,0-596,0 g weight. Striped snakehead measuring 200-367 mm were consistent in occupying habitats with a slightly dense to dense water plant density, while sizes 368-388 and 389-430 mm were consistent in habitats with sparse water plant density. The preference level of striped snakehead fish size 389-430 mm to habitats with rare aquatic plants is very high (Fij = 6). Therefore, the size can be used as an indicator of habitats with the rare aquatic plant category. The preference for 200-367 mm striped snakehead fish in dense aquatic plant habitats indicates that these habitats are foraging, growing, and protective zones. Abstract

The present study aimed to analyze ontogenetic shift in the diet of ornate threadfin bream related to body size and season in Kendari Bay. Monthly sampling was conducted from August 2009 to July 2010. Fish were caught using experimental gillnets with mesh sizes of %,1, 1%, 1% inch) and push nets (1 m diameter, 0.04 inch mesh). Stomach content analysis was determined using index of preponderance. A total of 67 individual fish were caught with range from 46-230 mm in length and 2.2-185.5 in weight. The fish were grouped into three groups that is small size (46-110 mm), middle (110.1-170 mm); and big (170.1-230 mm). The gut contents showed an ontogenetic shift in diet with an increase in length, small size feeds phytoplankton Thallasiothrix; whereas, middle and big sizes tend to consume Stolephorus commersonii. Moreover, ornate threadfin bream also showed the seasonal diet shift.

Abstract

Research on species composition and size of pony fish was carried out from August 2009 to June 2010 at three zone in Kendari Bay, Southeast Sulawesi. Fish collection by experimental gillnets (with different mesh sizes %, 1, 1%, 1%, and 2 inch) and seser (0 1 metre and mesh size 0.04 inch). Ten species of Leiognathidae were collected during research. There was six genera of Leiognathidae namely Gazza (1 species), Leiognathus (4 species), Nuchequula (1 species), Photopectoralis (1 species), Eubleekeria (1 species), and Secutor (2 species). Based on number of fish, N. blochii (39.72%) and E. splendens (33.95%) were dominant species on zone I (39.72%), Secutor indicius on zone II (38.75%), and N. blochii (20.50%) and E. splendens (25.10%) on zone III (25.10%). Based on frequency of occurrence during study, E. splendens was resident species (100%), while Photopectoralis bindus and L. dussumieri were rarely (18.18%). Size range and frequency of fish occurrence indicated that Kendari Bay used as nursery ground for pony fish.
