Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a common chronic condition in the elderly, leading to decreased independence in performing Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Family support is a key determinant in maintaining the independence of the elderly. However, the family's role is still not optimal. Health education based on family-centered nursing (FCN) is expected to empower patients and families to manage hypertension and improve functional abilities. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group was applied to evaluate the effect of Family-Centered Nursing (FCN)-based education on Activities of Daily Living (ADL) among elderly hypertensive patients. 64 participants meeting the inclusion criteria were selected using simple random sampling from the Rubaru Community Health Center, Indonesia. Data were collected using the validated Barthel Index questionnaire and analyzed with the Wilcoxon and Mann–Whitney tests using SPSS version 25. Results: Based on the paired t-test, the daily living activities score, p-value <.001, and the Independent test, p-value < .001 was obtained for both the control and treatment groups. This demonstrates the influence of family-centered nursing education on the independence of daily living activities of hypertension sufferers in the work area of the Rubaru Community Health Center. Conclusion: Family-centered nursing education has an impact and is effective on the daily living activities of older people with hypertension in the Rubaru Community Health Center (Puskesmas) area. It is recommended that the Community Health Center integrate family-based education programs into routine health services for the elderly.

Abstract

Pulmonary Tuberculosis (TB) remains the infectious disease with the highest mortality rate in Sumenep Regency, while the discovery of new cases at Pamolokan Health Center in 2025 reached only 52.6% of the national target of 90%. One key factor is the limited capacity of Posyandu cadres, who serve as the frontline in community-based health services, particularly in conducting close contact tracing. Strengthening their competence is essential to improve early TB case detection and reduce household transmission. This community service program applied a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach consisting of preparation, training, field mentoring, and evaluation. Twenty-five Posyandu cadres participated in interactive lectures, group discussions, case-based simulations, and on-the-job mentoring. Knowledge improvement was measured using pre-tests and post-tests, while skills were assessed through direct observation checklists during simulated and real field visits. The program significantly increased cadres’ knowledge, with average scores rising from 55.6% (pre-test) to 86.4% (post-test). The greatest improvement occurred in understanding close contact criteria (45%) and reporting procedures (40%). Skills also improved, with 92% of cadres demonstrating confident and structured communication during field visits and 88% successfully completing contact tracing forms accurately. Over three weeks of mentoring, cadres identified 42 close contacts from 15 TB patient households, with 38 (90.5%) agreeing to undergo examination at the health center. The combination of interactive training and on-the-job mentoring proved effective in strengthening cadres’ knowledge and practical abilities. Their social proximity to families helped reduce stigma-related barriers and improved cooperation during home visits. This approach also promoted sustainability, as cadres gained confidence to continue tracing activities with minimal supervision.

Abstract

Background: Stunting remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia. Conventional interventions often focus on pregnancy and early childhood, showing limited sustainability. Adolescents, as prospective parents, represent a strategic target for sustainable prevention, yet evidence on effective behavior change models for this group remains limited. Methods: This quasi-experimental study adhered to the TREND guideline. Female adolescents (N=120) aged 15-20 years from schools and Islamic boarding schools in Sumenep were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n=60) that received a structured IMB-based program or a control group (n=60) that received standard education. The intervention comprised sessions on information, motivation, and behavioral skills. Dependent variables were knowledge, motivation, and behavior, measured via validated questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U tests with significance at p < 0.05 Result: The intervention group showed significant improvements in knowledge (85% good post-test vs. 13.3% pre-test, p < 0.001), motivation (75% high post-test vs. 11.7% pre-test, p < 0.001), and behavior (90% good post-test vs. 11.6% pre-test, p < 0.001). The control group showed no significant changes. Conclusion: The IMB model effectively enhances stunting prevention knowledge, motivation, and behavior among adolescents. It is recommended for integration into adolescent health programs in similar LMIC settings.
