Abstract

The discussion of symbolic interaction emphasizes more on the motives underlying human actions. Symbolic interaction states that all human actions are based on two motives, namely the motive for (in order to motive) and the motive because (because to motive). Both motives are in the mind of a person who does the act and no one else knows. In Islam, this motive can be called the intention that underlies the act. This intention is important because it is the cause of the acceptance or rejection of an action. Therefore, it is necessary to critique this theory from the perspective of Islamic communication. The results of the criticism of this theory from an Islamic perspective are, first, behavior must be carried out with good motives and intended because of God as the owner of power. Although sometimes in life, there are also many motivations for human behavior that are for other than God. Second, human behavior is not entirely born of his will, but there is also God's will in it. Third, Islam recommends that confirmation be carried out to see the motives of actions.

Abstract

The qualitative research employed by the author examines the acculturation of Islamic communication values in Riau Malay marriage customs, observing events at various stages of the marriage process. Data is gathered through the Riau Malay Customary Institute (LAM Riau), using interviews and documentation and observing traditional marriage ceremonies. Additional data is collected from Riau community leaders involved in the marriage process. The research spans approximately 16 months. Findings indicate that Riau Malay traditional weddings are meticulously organized to affirm Malay identity and fulfill societal roles, with customs regulating life aspects at the national and state levels. Islamic communication strengthens individual religious identity. Secondly, values in Islamic communication, guided by the Quran and Hadith, are integral to traditional Malay wedding ceremonies, encompassing pre-wedding, marriage process, and post-wedding stages. Thirdly, the acculturation of Islam in Malay marriage customs dates back to the 15th century, marked by trade, intermarriages between Arab traders and locals, and the Islamization of Malay rulers, based on the Quran and As-Sunnah, the primary sources of Islamic teachings.

Abstract

The digital era creates a complex environment for Generation Alpha, immersed in technology from birth. This study aims to investigate how families, through communication patterns, facilitate innovation and healthy identity formation amidst the pressures of digital culture. Using a qualitative approach with a multi-family case study design with six subjects, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and analysis of communication artifacts. The results show that democratic and participatory communication patterns are significantly correlated with children's innovative capacity. Families that adopt a concept-oriented approach, emphasizing the exchange of ideas and the appreciation of differing opinions, are able to produce individuals with greater cognitive flexibility and resilience. Key findings identify psychological safety as a crucial mediator, enabling families to function as "identity laboratories" where children experiment with digital personas before consolidating authentic identities. The study concludes that transforming parents' roles into digital mentors is crucial for bridging the generation gap through active mediation. By integrating family values and digital influences, children can become thoughtful innovators and responsible digital citizens.

Abstract

The development of the new media ecosystem has significantly transformed the production and recognition patterns of religious authority in Indonesia. Amidst the increasingly massive penetration of the internet and social media, the legitimacy of ulama (Islamic scholars) no longer rests solely on institutional credentials, scholarly chains of narration, and recognition from traditional communities, but is also shaped by digital visibility, communication performativity, and the logic of platform algorithms. This article aims to systematically analyze the shift in ulama legitimacy in the virtual space by exploring the relationship between platform structures, communication strategies of religious figures, and audience participation in constructing or delegitimizing authority. The research uses a qualitative approach with a digital case study and digital ethnography design. Data were collected through observations of da'wah content on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, documentation of public interactions, and semi-structured interviews with religious figures and active followers. The analysis was conducted using thematic analysis with triangulation of sources and methods to ensure the credibility of the findings. The results indicate three main models of legitimacy: institutional-traditional, performative-digital, and hybrid, with the hybrid model proving more adaptive and stable in a networked society. Platform algorithms and audience participation play significant roles in shaping visibility and negotiating legitimacy. This study concludes that the shift in the legitimacy of ulama (ulama) is not the elimination of traditional authority, but rather a reconfiguration of social recognition mechanisms within the digital ecosystem. This implication underscores the importance of integrating scientific integrity and strategic digital literacy, and opens up opportunities for further research based on mixed-method approaches and social network analysis.
