Abstract

Abstract

This study aims at investigating and revealing language politeness strategies, as well as the factors that influence politeness strategies used by Papuan students during virtual in the context of virtual academic consultations as a practice of virtual communications to the lecturers. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods and purposive sampling to choose two lecturers and fifteen university students from the Papua as participants. Data was also gathered through online observation, offline interviews, and documentation. Online observations were made by evaluating screenshots of Google Classroom comments and recording of written conversations on WhatsApp and SMS sent by ten Papuan students. At the same time, offline interviews were carried out 10 students and 2 instructors. The data is then analysed using discourse analysis, which consists of multiple steps, including data recording, data transcription, data selection, and data interpretation. In line with the findings of this study, Papuan students use four types of politeness strategies when consulting with lecturers via virtual communication. They are positive, negative, bald on record, and off the record politeness strategies. In online communication, the negative politeness strategy is the most prevalent among Papuan students. The diversity of politeness strategies that are replicated, even if they appear unpleasant at times, is not an aspect of purposeful or disrespectful behaviour toward the interlocutor. But let us get back to the level of language skills, which still require more attention and are impacted by a variety of internal factors such as personality and age, and external factors such as culture, facilities obtained. The findings indicate that even when language capabilities are restricted in virtual communication, Papuan students receive enough education. This situation will improve the civility of language that students in Papua use while conversing digitally. As a result, higher education institutions in Papua should pay more attention to standard communication patterns when academic consulting with lecturers as speech partners in the context of higher education in Papua in order to develop comprehensive and effective communication practices.

Abstract

The study focuses on addressing a knowledge gap in learning English for non-EFL students in higher education in Papua. Non-EFL students in Papua sometimes find English unattractive, if not frightening. Translanguaging helps non-EFL students to acquire and practice English skills in virtual classrooms. The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of non-EFL students' virtual EFL learning through translanguaging. A qualitative study was conducted through interviews and observations with EFL teachers and non-EFL students attending English classes. There are several non-English departments in one of the higher education institutions in Papua, which are sources of information in this study. The data are then analyzed qualitatively using a discourse analysis framework. The results of the study show that the power of translanguaging for non-EFL students is an option that is always used during virtual English learning. The process of virtual English learning uses different digital learning platforms such as Zoom meetings, WhatsApp groups and Google classroom. The use of this platform has its own privileges as long as it is used in virtual English learning with translanguaging. The process of learning English using different platforms can be described by two activities, such as teacher activities using translanguaging and student activities. Virtual English learning using translanguaging is also illustrated by the use of various language resources owned by students. This is an added value of virtual EFL learning using translanguaging. Therefore, it is highly recommended that EFL teachers use translanguaging during the virtual EFL teaching process to make it easier for non-EFL students to understand EFL subjects.

Methods: This research uses a qualitative method of evaluative approach, with data collection techniques in the form of interviews, observation, and documentation and data analysis using the Miles and Huberman model. Results: Context evaluation of program implementation is quite in line with the vision, mission, and goals of the ma'had while the program needs analysis component has not been carried out comprehensively. 2. Input evaluation in general, the infrastructure component is quite good, while the curriculum component is not yet standardized, the teaching staff is limited and the budget is not adequate. 3. Process evaluation shows that the implementation of the program generally runs quite well. However, the involvement of mahasantri is very low, the learning method is still monotonous, and there are several obstacles such as limited teaching staff, limited time, and low motivation of mahasantri. 4. Product evaluation shows results that are not yet optimal. The number of mahasantri who passed the BTA certification was still very low. Even so, there is an increase in the ability of mahasantri to read the Qur'an and an increase in academic achievement based on the value of the BTA course. Conclusion: The implementation of the al-Qur'an study program in ma'had still faces various obstacles in the aspects of context, input, process, and product so that the results achieved are not optimal. Therefore, an optimization strategy is needed through strengthening the curriculum, improving the quality and quantity of teaching staff, providing adequate infrastructure, and sufficient budget support so that the program can run more effectively and sustainably. By optimizing this strategy, Ma'had is expected to be able to improve the quality of al-Qur'an study program in Ma'had.

Abstract

The goal of this program is to process soybeans into the signature tempe of Nimbokrang, which is expected to be managed by families in the village as a home-based business. This program uses the PDCA method (planning, action, checking, and action), which includes all steps from product planning to the assistance provided. The results of this program include product analysis, packaging, marketing strategies, training in product creation, and development of entrepreneurship strategies, leading up to the launch of the tempe product. The SWOT analysis shows that the strength of this product is that it is the only one in Nimbokrang, made from high-quality soybeans. However, there is a weakness in sourcing raw materials for tempe. Limited internet access also poses a challenge in marketing through social media. On the other hand, the tempe product has good opportunities in this village and the existence of the village supports marketing. The threats include the emergence of tempe products from surrounding areas that become competitors. With attractive packaging and the right marketing techniques, it is hoped that this mentoring program can encourage families to produce tempe on a larger scale as a home industry.

Abstract

Significant changes in children’s play behavior caused by the dominance of digital devices and online games have limited access to physical play. This condition raises concerns about the decline of direct social interactions and opportunities for developing social skills. This study aims to explore the impact of the play environment (particularly technology) on children’s social development and to examine the influence of technology use in the play environment on children’s learning interest in the Perumnas I Waena area of Jayapura City. This research employed a qualitative approach with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using a flow model. Findings: In Perumnas I Waena, children’s play comfort is influenced by physical, psychological, and social aspects. Although large playgrounds are available, external factors such as stray dogs reduce the sense of safety. Environmental management, adult supervision, and the involvement of parents and the community are needed. Social interaction during play serves as a foundation for children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development. Learning motivation is influenced by the environment, enjoyable learning methods, and the integration of technology. Motivation arises from both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, highlighting the importance of adults in balancing technology use with social interaction. The physical environment strengthens social skills and cooperation, while the digital environment fosters creativity, strategy, and technological skills. A balanced combination of traditional and digital play is required to ensure children’s optimal development.
