Abstract

The study aims to determine: (1) The level of students’ learning outcomes before and after the application of Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach based on Kajang local wisdom. (2) The improvement of students' learning outcomes after the application of the CRT approach. (3) A significant increase in students' learning outcomes after the application of the CRT approach. This research is pre-experiment research with One Group Pretest-Posttest Design research design. The study population was students of class VII of SMPN 1 Bulukumba in the 2023/2024 school year, with 24 students from class VII.6 as sample that selected using Purposive Sampling technique. The instrument was a multiple choice questions on Indonesian Ecology and Biodiversity material. Data was analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed 1) The learning outcomes of students before the application were in the low category with an average score of 6.21 and after the application was in a very high category with an average score of 16.75, 2) The improvement of students' learning outcomes obtained an average N-Gain of 0.76 with a high category. 3) There is a significant increase in student learning outcomes based on the t-test of learning outcomes.

Abstract

Gowa Regency has abundant natural and cultural resources that hold potential for educational development. However, these resources have not been fully utilized in science learning at the junior high school level, including at SMP Negeri 1 Gowa, due to limited facilities and insufficient teacher training. This community service program aimed to empower students and teachers with relevant science and technology skills through project-based innovation training focused on herbarium creation. Herbarium, as a collection of preserved plants, serves as an effective learning medium to enhance biological concept understanding and foster conservation awareness. The program involved socialization, hands-on herbarium-making training, technology integration, mentoring, program sustainability, and final reflection. Data were collected through observation, tests, and reflection, and were analyzed descriptively. The results indicated that students successfully produced herbarium collections, demonstrating improvements in conceptual understanding, practical skills, and creativity. Teachers also gained experience in designing project-based learning aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum principles, enhancing their instructional competence in science education. Keywords: Training, Science Innovation, Herbarium, Merdeka Curriculum

Abstract

Abstract. This study investigates the effect of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) approach on the critical thinking skills of 11th-grade students at SMA Negeri 9 Makassar. The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 9 Makassar. The population comprised all 11th-grade students, divided into two classes. Sample selection was based on the average final exam scores, resulting in XI Biology 2 being assigned as the experimental class and XI Biology 4 as the control class. Research instruments included an observation sheet for STEM-based practical activities and an essay test to measure critical thinking skills. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics with the SPSS program. The results indicate that the implementation of the STEM approach positively influences students’ critical thinking skills. This is evidenced by the higher average critical thinking score of the experimental class (79.61) compared to the control class (65.10). Therefore, the STEM approach can be concluded to have a significant impact on enhancing students’ critical thinking skills. Keywords: STEM, biology, critical thinking, student

Abstract

Abstract

This activity aims to optimize practicum-based science learning through the utilization of Science Kits (KIT IPA) at State Junior High School 8 Makassar. The problem faced by science teachers at the school was their limited experience in using Science Kits optimally, particularly the Optics Kit and the Electricity and Magnetism Kit, resulting in less effective practicum implementation. The training was conducted through a workshop approach consisting of kit usage demonstrations, hands-on practice, and assistance in developing experiment-based student worksheets (LKPD). The results of the activity showed an improvement in teachers’ understanding of the functions and procedures for using Science Kits, as well as an increase in science teachers’ ability to design practicum activities aligned with learning outcomes. In addition, participants applied the simple practicum modules developed during the training to be implemented in classroom learning. This activity contributed to improving the quality of science learning at State Junior High School 8 Makassar and strengthening teachers’ competencies in conducting active, contextual, and inquiry-based learning.
