Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the role of peer social support in enhancing self-confidence among adolescents at the Amal Wanita An-Nur Orphanage in Depok, Indonesia. Adolescents living in orphanages often experience psychological challenges, including low self-confidence and limited social interaction, which can affect their personal growth and future orientation. The objective of this research is to explore how peer social support contributes to strengthening self-confidence and to identify the forms, driving factors, and obstacles of such support. A qualitative descriptive method was applied through observation, interviews, and documentation, involving seven informants consisting of the orphanage head, caregivers, and adolescents. Findings show that three types of support emotional, appraisal, and informational play a dominant role in fostering self-confidence. Emotional support was expressed through empathy and active listening, appraisal support was provided through recognition of achievements and encouragement, while informational support involved advice and constructive feedback. Meanwhile, instrumental and network support were less emphasized due to limited resources. Despite the presence of barriers such as feelings of inferiority, miscommunication, and differences in emotional readiness, peer support proved effective in motivating adolescents, strengthening their resilience, and fostering positive self-perception. The implications suggest the need for structured peer-support programs, facilitated by caregivers and social workers, to maximize adolescents’ potential and prepare them for future challenges. Thus, this study demonstrates that peer social support serves not only as a protective factor but also as a social learning tool that shapes adolescents' interpersonal skills. Targeted programs can increase self-confidence, expand social relationships, and create a more supportive and inclusive nursing home environment.

Abstract

Communication is the process of exchanging and sharing information that plays a role as a medium in conveying information and a tool to influence others. One type of communication that is often used is interpersonal communication, because it is done face-to-face directly and using smartphones that are considered effective for persuading others, as well as carried out by caregivers at the An-Nur Women's Charity Home. This research aims to find out how to apply the elements of interpersonal communication media used, how to achieve the goals of interpersonal communication, and the driving and inhibiting factors of interpersonal communication. Methods used in this study include qualitative research with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation from various informants. The results of the analysis show that the interpersonal communication process provided by caregivers includes material about religion, education, guidance, reprimands, advice, questions, storytelling, motivation, and solutions. Additionally, there is a closeness in interpersonal communication between caregivers and children, formed through listening, opening up to each other, sharing stories, understanding messages, and making caregivers both friends and parents. Empathetic, consistent, and attentive communication from the caregiver significantly contributes to the formation of self-confidence, social skills, independence, and responsibility in foster children. Furthermore, a caregiver with strong interpersonal relationships creates a comfortable and supportive environment for children to develop optimally. Open and supportive interpersonal communication helps the child feel valued, heard, and cared for, which contributes to the development of foster children in line with expectations.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the East Lombok government and Muhammadiyah in addressing child marriage within the Sasak community, with particular attention to the culturally embedded practice of Merariq. Conducted over two months of fieldwork between January and February 2025, the research employed a qualitative design that combined document analysis, participatory observation, and in-depth interviews with ten local community members, two religious leaders, and five government officials. Data were analyzed using an iterative coding process beginning with open coding to identify emergent patterns, followed by focused coding aligned with Bourdieu’s framework supplemented by theoretical triangulation to enhance analytical rigor. The findings indicate that although legal frameworks have been formally implemented, their effectiveness is hindered by entrenched cultural norms, economic pressures, and the coexistence of overlapping legal systems. In contrast, Muhammadiyah’s initiatives, particularly its reinterpretation of Islamic values and its community-based family-strengthening programs, have demonstrated greater cultural resonance and have offered practical alternatives to early marriage. These insights underscore the necessity for culturally sensitive and multi-institutional approaches that effectively integrate statutory enforcement, religious authority, and community engagement. The study contributes to broader discussions on child marriage prevention by illustrating how tradition, law, and religion interact within pluralistic societies, and by providing actionable pathways for local institutions to reduce child marriage while honoring cultural heritage.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the stages, impacts, and supporting and inhibiting factors of social intervention for child victims of sexual violence at the “Handayani” Center, East Jakarta. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach to obtain an in-depth understanding of the intervention process. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that the “Handayani” Center applies the Generalist Intervention Model (GIM) through seven stages: engagement, assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, termination, and follow-up. The social intervention has a positive impact on children, particularly in improving emotional stability, self-confidence, and social functioning. Furthermore, the intervention supports children’s readiness for social reintegration. Supporting factors include the professionalism of social workers and effective team collaboration, while inhibiting factors consist of high workload, delays in administrative reporting, and limited family support.
