Abstract

The research was conducted to determine the relationship between water quality and body length of arowana fish by measuring several water parameters including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and ammonia. In relation to length growth, calculations on SR, SGR are also carried out using ANNOVA. Direct laboratory scale observations were carried out by providing different feeds, including bloodworms, maggot, crickets and live fish with the water source for cultivation activities being well water. The results of observations in the field show that the growth rate of fish in length is influenced by the type of feed given. Giving bloodworms has the most effective value, next to live fish, maggots and crickets. This type of feed also affects the quality of the water used. To maintain success in ornamental fish cultivation, it is recommended to use water efficiently through integrated fish cultivation. Checking the water regularly as well as training of farmers on good management practices and integration is needed to ensure good water quality.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of alternative feed sources, namely mung bean sprouts (KC) and sente plants (TS), combined with pellets, on the reproductive performance of gourami (Osphronemus gouramy) broodstock. Observed parameters included the number of spawning broodstock, fecundity, fertilization rate (FR), hatching rate (HR), and larval survival rate (SR). The spawning was conducted using a natural method with a male-to-female ratio of 1:3. Results showed that the KC treatment yielded superior outcomes compared to TS and control treatments. The highest average FR was observed in the TS treatment (87.35%), followed by KC (86.36%) and the control (75.04%). The highest HR was recorded in the KC treatment at 90%, producing 3,996 larvae per broodstock, while TS resulted in 87.67% (3,364 larvae per broodstock) and the control 80% (1,862 larvae per broodstock). The highest SR was also obtained in the KC treatment at 96.37% (3,849 larvae per broodstock), followed by TS at 95.04% (3,187 larvae per broodstock) and the control at 91.34% (1,538 larvae per broodstock). The KC feed increased broodstock fecundity up to 5,127 eggs per broodstock (1,602 eggs per kg), while the TS feed resulted in 4,355 eggs per broodstock (1,361 eggs per kg). The vitamin E content in mung bean sprouts and the vitamin C and flavonoid contents in sente plants played vital roles in supporting gonad maturation, egg quality, and larval survival. Overall, the combination of KC and pellets is recommended as a functional alternative feed to sustainably enhance the reproductive success of gourami broodstock.

Abstract

Nilem fish Osteochilus vittatus is an economically valuable freshwater species that also supports ecological sustainability. However, its aquaculture is hindered by slow larval growth and high mortality rates. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of vitamin C-enriched daphnia as a dietary supplement to enhance the growth performance and survival of nilem fish larvae. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was implemented, consisting of 4 treatments with 3 replicates each: VC0 (0 mg L-¹), VC200 (200 mg L-¹), VC250 (250 mg L-¹), and VC300 (300 mg L-¹) of vitamin C enrichment. Larvae aged 15 days were stocked at a density of 5 individuals L-1 in aquarium containing 7 L of water. Enrichment was conducted by immersing daphnia in vitamin C solutions for 3 hours prior to feeding. The results indicated that vitamin C supplementation significantly improved larval growth (p<0.05), with the highest length and weight gains observed in treatments VC300. However, survival rates peaked at 100% in VC200 and VC250 treatments. The study concludes that vitamin C-enriched daphnia, particularly at 200–250 mg L-¹, effectively enhances both growth and survival in nilem fish larvae

Abstract

Background: Diatoms require silicate for frustule formation and optimal cell division, making silicate availability a critical factor in improving microalgal production for aquaculture. Thalassiosira sp. is one of the most widely used live feeds in shrimp hatcheries because of its high nutritional value and suitable cell size for larval consumption.Aims: This study evaluated the effects of different silicate concentrations on the growth performance of Thalassiosira sp. by simultaneously assessing cell density, specific growth rate (SGR), and division rate (DR).Methods: A completely randomized design with four treatments was employed: control (without silicate), 15 ppm (SL15), 20 ppm (SL20), and 25 ppm (SL25), each with three replicates. Cell density was monitored daily for 14 days using a haemocytometer, while SGR and DR were calculated from the exponential growth model. Results: The results showed that silicate supplementation significantly affected all growth parameters (p < 0.05). The highest cell density (4.60 × 10⁶ cells mL⁻¹) was obtained in the SL25 treatment on day 12, whereas the highest SGR (29.17 ± 0.32% day⁻¹) and DR (0.422 ± 0.005 divisions day⁻¹) were recorded in SL20. However, Duncan's Multiple Range Test indicated no significant differences between SL20 and SL25 for SGR and DR, suggesting comparable physiological responses at these silicate concentrations. These findings indicate that silicate concentrations between 20 and 25 ppm provide the optimal range for enhancing the growth performance of Thalassiosira sp. and may improve the efficiency of live-feed production for shrimp hatchery applications. Conclusion: Silicate supplementation significantly improve the growth performance of Thalassiosira sp., as reflected by increased cell density, specific growth rate, and division rate.
