Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on students' mathematical problem-solving skills, considering their critical thinking abilities. A quasi-experimental design with a 2x2 treatment-by-level approach was used, involving two groups: one using the PBL model and the other using conventional methods. The subjects were seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja. Data were collected through tests on mathematical problem-solving and critical thinking abilities. The results show that the PBL model significantly affects mathematical problem-solving skills, particularly for students with high critical thinking abilities. Students in the PBL group had an average score of 79.9, higher than those in the conventional group, who scored 56.6 on average. Moreover, the interaction between the teaching model and critical thinking abilities significantly influenced the outcomes. However, for students with low critical thinking abilities, the PBL model did not have a significant impact on their mathematical problem-solving skills. This study concludes that the PBL model is effective in improving problem-solving skills in students with high critical thinking abilities but may need adjustments for students with lower critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Teachers’ experience and autonomy in designing evaluations often overlook the needs of students with special needs, a key component of inclusive education in vocational high schools. The integration of the Design for Change (DfC) approach, a component of design thinking, is regarded as a relevant approach to bridge mathematics learning with both inclusivity and industry relevance. This study explores the impact of integrating the DfC approach supported by teachers’ understanding of evaluation on the autonomy of inclusive vocational school teachers in developing problem-based mathematics learning evaluations. Using a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design, data collection began with a quantitative phase involving 114 mathematics teachers from inclusive SMK Pusat Keunggulan in Bali, selected through cluster random sampling. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression and t-tests. The qualitative phase involved two purposively selected teacher informants, with data gathered via semi-structured interviews and analyzed descriptively. Findings reveal that teachers with a strong understanding of the DfC tend to show greater autonomy in designing problem-based mathematics learning evaluations aligned with both student needs and vocational demands. The DfC approach is shown to support mathematics teachers in creating innovative, inclusive, and industry-relevant evaluations.

Abstract

The demographic process cannot be inseparable from the mortality rate. The appropriate models for forecasting mortality rates are essential in assisting governments, companies, and other agencies in formulating policies or making decisions. As one of the countries with the highest death rate, Japan is influenced by several factors. This research uses the Generalized Lee-Carter Model), which is one of the developments of the Lee-Carter (LC) model. The Lee-Carter model was prevalent by Lee and Carter (1995) as an alternative that is suspected to predict the mortality rate of an area. The first step in this research is to formulate the Generalized Lee-Carter function. Through the function formula, the estimator value of the Generalized Lee-Carter model will be searched in the second stage. And the third stage, through the Generalized Lee-Carter model, will find the RMSE value and then use it in the fourth stage, namely forecasting the future period using ARIMA. The data in this study is facilitated through www.mortality.org, which is one of the Japanese population data. The result of the study showed that the RMSE value for females was 0.01670 and 0.016292 for males. So, it concluded that the Generalized Lee-Carter Model is great for forecasting mortality rates.
