Abstract

Geometric argumentation has an important role in solving mathematical problems in geometric material, so students must have this ability. Each student has different thoughts, including when stating arguments. Each student's arguments will vary and be at different levels. This study aims to determine the levels of lower secondary school students' geometric argumentation. This research was conducted in a lower secondary school involving 20 ninth-grade students. Students participating in this study were asked to work on geometry problems related to proof. Through the proofs carried out, the argumentation structure owned by students is visible. The structures of argumentation given by the students were then analysed using Toulmin's model of argumentation.  The components of the Toulmin model used consist of claim, data, warrant, and backing.  The results of the analysis of the proof prepared by the students stated that some of the students have been able to reach a high level of geometric argumentation and can compile a series of proofs. But not a few of them also have difficulty compiling the proof, have difficulty providing the components of the Toulmin model, and make some mistakes. Errors made by students include symbol writing errors, calculation errors, and others.

Abstract

Proof of geometry is a topic that involves mathematical reasoning abilities and relates to perseverance involving hard work, the spirit of achievement, and self-confidence. The current important problem that occurs at this time is that students who are future teachers of mathematics still experience difficulties in compiling proofs, especially those who are not challenged to work hard. This qualitative research explores mathematics teacher candidates' reasoning abilities and perseverance in proving geometric theorems. Therefore, the research design used a case study. There were three participants in this study, and they were student prospective mathematics teachers' s taking geometry courses. Data were collected through working documents, open questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews and were analyzed using iterative techniques consisting of data condensation, data exposure, and verification. The study's results showed that students' prospective teachers did not prioritize proof in solving geometry problems, even though they worked hard to solve the problems independently until they were finished. The students' perseverance also impacts their mathematical reasoning in proving geometric theorems. Students with more hard work values tend to have more reasoning values. The results of this study have implications that there needs to be an effort from the teacher to get used to giving proof questions to support students' perseverance and mathematical reasoning abilities.

Abstract

Learning style is one of the critical factors influencing the development of problem-solving skill. This study aims to examine mathematical problem-solving abilities in relation to students' learning styles. The research involved 32 eleventh-grade students from SMAN Banyuasin III. Data were collected through problem-solving tests and learning style questionnaires. A qualitative analysis was conducted to evaluate the students' problem-solving skills based on their learning styles. The findings revealed significant variations in problem-solving skills among the different learning style groups. Students with a visual learning style performed better on geometry problem-solving tasks, particularly when aided by visual elements. Conversely, auditory learners faced difficulties in comprehending the problems and often required additional verbal explanations from the teacher. Kinesthetic learners, however, struggled the most, exhibiting very low problem-solving abilities. These results underscore the importance of tailoring instructional strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles

Abstract

Rationalism value is closely related to mathematics because it is based on reason and knowledge. The results of rationalism values develop students' skills in terms of reasoning, expressing and defending their opinions, interpreting data obtained from experiences and attempting to make predictions. Therefore, this study aims to describe student rationalism values in linear program problem-based learning. The research subjects were determined purposively based on the result of summative assessment, teacher recommendation, the diversity of answers, and the willingness to be involved in the research. The selected subject was three students of class X SMA in Indralaya. The data were collected using tests and interviews, which were analyzed descriptively. The Problem-based Learning Model can bring out Rationalism Values in Linear Program material. Students can develop indicators, investigate the truth, and conclude. The indicators that appear most frequently are investigating the truth. Difficulties often predominantly arise when translating problems into mathematical models. The cause of students experiencing errors in concluding is due to errors in understanding mathematical concepts in the form of inequality signs where students mistakenly differentiate between the inequalities "less than" and "less than equal to", one of the reasons for this is because they have not mastered the prerequisite material such as linear inequalities in one variable or two variables.

Abstract

The 21st century demands educational approaches that align with technological advancements and societal needs. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) integrates multiple disciplines to foster critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration in solving real-world problems. This study aims to explore ninth-grade students' perceptions of STEAM-based mathematics learning at SMP Negeri 13 Palembang. A mixed-method approach was employed, involving 94 students aged 13–15 years through questionnaires and unstructured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using Likert scale scoring, while qualitative data were assessed descriptively. Results indicate that students generally understand the concept of STEAM but lack clarity regarding its learning models, benefits, and assessment techniques. Most students (70.68%) perceived STEAM-based mathematics learning positively, finding it engaging, beneficial for understanding and retaining concepts, and motivating for further learning. Additionally, integrating technology and arts in mathematics increased student interest and participation. The study concludes that STEAM-based learning can enhance the effectiveness of mathematics education by creating a more interactive and meaningful experience for students. This approach equips students with essential 21st-century skills, making it a relevant strategy for future educational practices. Further studies are recommended to assess its long-term impact on student achievement and engagement.
