Abstract

The 21st century demands educational approaches that align with technological advancements and societal needs. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) integrates multiple disciplines to foster critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration in solving real-world problems. This study aims to explore ninth-grade students' perceptions of STEAM-based mathematics learning at SMP Negeri 13 Palembang. A mixed-method approach was employed, involving 94 students aged 13–15 years through questionnaires and unstructured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using Likert scale scoring, while qualitative data were assessed descriptively. Results indicate that students generally understand the concept of STEAM but lack clarity regarding its learning models, benefits, and assessment techniques. Most students (70.68%) perceived STEAM-based mathematics learning positively, finding it engaging, beneficial for understanding and retaining concepts, and motivating for further learning. Additionally, integrating technology and arts in mathematics increased student interest and participation. The study concludes that STEAM-based learning can enhance the effectiveness of mathematics education by creating a more interactive and meaningful experience for students. This approach equips students with essential 21st-century skills, making it a relevant strategy for future educational practices. Further studies are recommended to assess its long-term impact on student achievement and engagement.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the development of a STEM-based learning environment for early childhood teacher candidates that is valid, practical, and has potential effects. The research sample consisted of 25 pre-service early childhood teachers and 19 students Kindergarten. The research method used was design research with the type of development study. This research has produced a learning environment with the Campus-Application-School (CAS) model consisting of the stages of training, designing, mentoring, and testing. The validity of the STEM-based learning environment model was seen from the developed student worksheet (LKPD) instrument and the content in the learning environment, obtaining a value of 0.88, which was categorized as high validity. The practicality, as seen from the results of one-to-one teaching, small group, and field tests with an average of 94.2, was categorized as very good. Meanwhile, the potential effect was based on Kirkpatrick's four levels of training evaluation with an average of 83.73, which was categorized as very good. This research suggests that the CAS learning environment model can affect teacher approaches to teaching in a step appropriate way based on STEM to prepare student teachers to teach basic mathematics.

Abstract

This research aims to produce STEM-based 2D shapes learning trajectories in the context of parachuting to support students’ flexibility ability. The method chosen was design research type validation studies consisting of three stages: preparation for experiment, design experiment, and retrospective analysis conducted for two cycles. The research subjects were 7th grade junior high school students selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, written tests, and interviews, then analyzed qualitatively and presented in text narratives. The result of this study is a learning trajectory consisting of three activities, namely 1) making three square-shaped canopy designs with different sizes and the same suspension rope length, 2) making three square-shaped canopy designs with the same size and different suspension rope lengths, and 3) making three canopy designs in the form of different quadrilateral with the same canopy area and suspension rope length. The learning trajectory developed is able to support students' flexibility ability where in the learning process students are directed to realize the existence of alternative strategy choices or varied solutions, utilize various knowledge possessed, determine the most effective and efficient way or strategy, and believe in the truth of the answers used in solving problems.

Abstract

This research has a purpose to know the student’s difficulties in resolving PISA problems in Change and Relationship content for level 4, 5, and 6 in Junior High School. This is a descriptive research that has a purpose to identify and describe the student’s difficulties in resolving PISA problems in Change and Relationship content for level 4, 5, and 6. The subject of this research are 6 students of IX grade of SMP Negeri 1 Inderalaya. This research used data gathering technique that are written test and interview. The results of this research showed that students resolving PISA problems in Change and Relationship content for level 4, 5, and 6 felt difficult in understanding the problems, transforming real world problems into mathematics structure, solving the mathematics problem and interpreting mathematics solutions into the real world. The results show the difficulty in understanding the problem and transforming real world problems into mathematics structure is more dominant than the other difficulties.

Abstract

One of mathematic lesson which is used in our daily life is fraction. Reside that fraction is Basic of mathematic learning. But it still difficult by students. Therefore, it is hended to develop the lesson by using PMRI-based to improve student‟s achievment. These research objectives are: (1) to find out the valid and practical lesson for fraction which is Developer by PMRI-based. (2) to know the potencial effect which is come up from developing the fraction lesson through students‟ achievement and their activity. Research methodology was used is development research which is included from analisis, design, evaluation and revision. In collecting the data was applied by using observation and test. Observation was done in order to see students‟ activity in process of learning by using PMRI-based and the best was used to measure their ability. The sample of this research was the third year students (35 Students) Primary Scholl 0f 21 Palembang in second semestre. The conclusions are (1) Prototype of the lesson which was Developer is valid, practical and had a potencial effect, (2) there was one ineffective aspect in process of learning that is finishing the problem solving or finding answer of the problem, comparing their solutions or discussing with friends and in asking aspect or in finding the questions/answers of friends/teacher and (3) the test result to measure students‟ ability (87,0). It showed that the level of students‟ ability is categorized as very good ability. Therefore, learning realistic mathematic can be used to improve students‟ achievement.DOI: 10.22342/jpm.5.2.584.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low ability of students to solve math problems. This is due to the lack of ability of students in understanding the problem and carrying out up the problem-solving plan with the right method. This study aims to determine the ability of students solving mathematical problems with the use of mind mapping method in bilingual class SMP Negeri 1 Palembang and get some description of the quality of mind mapping used by students in solving problem-solving problems. The subjects of this study are 30 students of class VII.2 SMP Negeri 1 Palembang. This research method is descriptive research. Based on the results of research and discussion it can be concluded that the quality of mind map categorized good with the average value of 76.11 while the ability of students solving mathematical problems with mind mapping method as a whole is categorized good that is equal to 78.93. While the ability of students to solve the problem with mind mapping method as a whole is as much as 35.71% of students in very good category. Based on the results of these studies, it is expected to the school to facilitate teachers and students to be able to carry out learning that can improve the ability to solve mathematical problems and always open with innovative new methods or techniques that drive that ability.
