Abstract

This article presents the importance theory of translation in translation training to build translation competence in revitalizing the teaching of translation. Firstly, the translation competence is defined. Then, six sub-competences of translation competence are described and materials given in the translation subject to build students’ competence are presented. This competence builds students’ awareness in detecting translation problem and finding the strategy to solve it. Some strategy applied by the translator in his translation (translation technique) are presented. These techniques are implemented to solve untranslatability. By introducing these techniques, the students improve their translation competence, especially in translating untranslatable words or expression. Students’ responses on the materials related the translation theory are also presented. This will be useful input for future improvement for the translation subject.Key words: translation theory, translation competence, problem-based solving

Abstract

Subtitling is a kind of audiovisual translation/AVT. Translating oral dialogue into text (subtitling) has various aspects that must be considered, such as time exposure, space limitation. Related to sociolinguistic aspect, it is also known that language user and usage determined by various factors, such as, age, sex, and profession. One of the objects in sociolinguistics is register, a language variation, which exists in any social group. This research is aimed at discovering the ways of translator make the subtitle of military register as the character of a social group. Besides, it also aims at finding problems in the subtitle  of military register and its implication toward teaching the translation subject. The tentative finding shows that military register tends to be translated in general term and non military register.   Keyword: subtitling, military register, audiovisual translation

Abstract

This paper aims at discussing, values and characters in translation process that must be taught to the students in order to produce good translation. In the translation process, translators face various problems whether untranslatability issues, culture, and ideology. To resolve these problems translators are required to have the competence and intelligence of selecting the best strategy. To that end, in teaching translation skill, the students are trained to not easily give up, choosing a good diction, and the best way to convey the message contained in the target language. Translators are required to be honest but should not be too honest/plain. Translators must not add or subtract in the target language, but the translator may add and reduce information. This principles seem ambiguous, could it be done is teaching process?   Keywords: translation, characters building, translation competencies.

Abstract

A translation is a bridge of communication among nations that have unique cultures and language. In fact, cultural differences lead to different ways of delivering ideas or message. Even, similar utterance might have different meaning depend on its contextual setting and the speaker. Therefore, translation process is not a simple activity of replacing words from a language into another language. This paper aims at introducing cross cultural communication awareness that must be owned to be a professional translator. Besides, this paper also aims at showing the use of pragmatic analysis in understanding and solving the problem of translation related to cultural differences. Firstly, some sources of (unidentified) translation problems related to specific feature of languages are raised and ways to analyze and solve the problems are proposed. Key words: cross cultural, cultural awareness, pragmatic, translation.
