Abstract

Acceptability and readability are the aspects of translation quality. The objective of this research is to know the translation acceptability and readability made by the students’ of English Department of UNP in translating food label from English into Bahasa Indonesia. This study used descriptive method. The data of this research is  the translation product of food label made by English Department Students who take English-Indonesian Translation subject. The instruments of this study is translations test.  To gain the trustworthiness of the instrument of the research was validated and the acceptability and readability were scored by involving raters. The finding of this study reveal that the score of translation acceptability and readability of food label made by the students is less acceptable but readable. The average score for the acceptability, students’ translation acquired the average score of 2.26 which means less acceptable. Meanwhile, for the aspect of readability, the average score of translation made by the students is 2.62 means  readable. It can be concluded that the English Department students still need to improve their translation competence.

Abstract

AbstrakTujuan penulisan dari artikel ini adalah untuk menjelaskan penerapan Readers’ Theatre sebagai salah satu strategi yang mampu meningkatkan kelancaran siswa dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris pada satuan Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA). Di dalam strategi tersebut terdapat 4 aspek pendukung yang saling terintegratif dalam proses pembelajaran, yaitu: listening, writing, reading dan speaking.Langkah awal, siswa mendengarkan sebuah cerita pendek berbentuk narrative. Selanjutnya, siswa menjawab beberapa pertanyaan dari cerita yang ditampilkan. Langkah kedua, siswa secara berkelompok menulis naskah drama sesuai dengan cerita yang mereka dengarkan atau siswa memilih dari naskah yang telah ada. Langkah ketiga, siswa membaca dialog tersebut. Poin yang paling penting yakni kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara dengan memperhatikan kecepatan, pausing, volume,dan keterbataan dalam berbicara. Kegiatan ini dilakukan berulang kali. Hasil akhir dari readers’ theatre adalah siswa mampu menampilkan drama di depan kelas. Dengan adanya strategi ini, siswa akan mampu berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris secara lancar.Keywords: speaking, fluency, readers’ theatre, teaching speaking at Senior High School

Abstract

Flip learning is a form of blended learning (through face-to-face and virtual/online interactions) that combines synchronous and asynchronous independent learning. Synchronous learning usually occurs in real time in the classroom. Asynchronous learning is learning that is more independent outside the classroom. This study investigated the implementation of Flip Learning Method in teaching English. This study aims to find out does the teacher have implemented all the steps of flip learning method in learning English subject at SMA N 16 Padang. The data in this study were the results of the observation checklist and interview. The sources of data are video recorded of learning activity, WhatsApp, and Google Classroom. The data in this study were obtained using an observation checklist and interview guide. In this study there are four steps of implementing Flip Learning Method, namely before class begins, beginning of class, during class, and after class. In this study found that in before class begin, from a total 4 steps that contained in the observation checklist, only 2 steps have been implemented and 2 steps have not been implemented. For beginning of class, there are 2 steps and both are not implemented. For during class, there are 6 steps and all the steps have been done. And in the after-class, there is 1 step and this step has also been caried out. Based on this research, the researcher found that the implementation of flip learning method in the English subject at SMA N 16 Padang is not perfect.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the translation techniques used by English department students in translate swear words in the Fight Club novel. This is descriptive qualitative research. Students from the translation class were chosen for this study using a cluster random sampling technique. Techniques for collecting data include translation tests. Translation technique was classified based on Molina and Albir theory. The result of this research indicate that students’ techniques in translating swear words in novel were literal translation, adaptation, discursive creation, reduction, borrowing, established equivalent, explicitation, description, modulation, and substitution. This finding is aplies that swear words is best translated in established equivalent technique.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to compare the students’ speaking anxiety based on students’ learning style at second grade of SMP N 29 Padang. It was carried out using descriptive method. In learning style, the result of this research showed almost of 31 students in class VIII.1 of SMP N 29 Padang dominant in “Authority- Oriented” after that they dominant in “Concrete”, and just several students who dominant in “Communicative” learning style. Furthermore, based on speaking anxiety level, the result of this research showed almost of all students in class VIII.1 of SMP N 29 Padang dominant in “Anxious” level in the first position and in second position the students dominant in “Mildly Anxious” , but just several students who dominant in “relaxed” speaking anxiety level.

Abstract

In the pandemic situation encourage several school modify their learning activities with combining online learning and offline learning. The combination of the online learning and face to face learning in the school is known as hybrid learning. The results of this analysis on the hybrid learning applied during the Covid-19 pandemic can be used as consideration for future policymaking. The purpose of this study is to identify students' perception on hybrid learning in English subject and to measure students' motivation on hybrid learning in English subject. This research used descriptive quantitative research. The sample for this research was 65 students of SMK 3 Padang. The data collection technique used in this research was a questionnaire. Therefore, the results of this study showed that the majority of SMK 3 students had a positive or good perception of the implementation of hybrid learning. The students agree that the use of hybrid learning motivates students to be more active in class, improves students’ critical thinking, interpretation, communication, collaboration skills.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the accuracy and the acceptability of students’ post-editing of idiomatic expression translation from English into Indonesia by using U Dictionary. In this study, researchers used English students at Padang State University who had taken translation courses. Researchers use the translation test as a research instrument. This research method is descriptive qualitative. To analyze the data, the researcher identified the accuracy and acceptability of the students' post-editing results against the results of the U Dictionary. Then, the researcher calculates the average accuracy and acceptability. The researcher found that the level of accuracy and acceptability of post-editing for English students who have taken translation courses in translating idiomatic expressions is at the "almost accurate and less acceptable" level. With an average accuracy level of 2.3107. As for the level of acceptance, it is at an average of 2.3764.

Abstract

Writing thesis abstracts in two languages, Indonesian and English, is one of the requirements for undergraduate students in Indonesia. Therefore, translation plays a significant role in exchanging information written in abstracts from Indonesian to English. This study aims to analyze the morpho-syntactic errors made by the fifth semester English education students of Universitas Negeri Padang. A descriptive research design was employed in this study. This study's population consisted of fifth semester English education students at Universitas Negeri Padang. The purposive sampling method was used to select 20 students as the sample. A translation test was used to collect data. The researcher analyzed and categorized the morpho-syntactic errors based on its types. Findings revealed that there were in total 196 morpho-syntactic errors found in students’ translation results. The most frequent type of error found is error in the use of articles, with a total amount of 63 data. Meanwhile, the least frequent type of errors is wrong sequence of tense, with a total amount of 2 data.

Abstract

The teaching assistance program is one of the courses the faculty offers to help students become ready to become professional teachers. This teaching assistance is carried out by a different program, created by Mr. Nadiem Makariem as the Minister of Education in the Emancipated Learning (MBKM), and teaching assistance organized by Universitas Negeri Padang. This study will discuss the students’ perception on teaching assistance program organized by Minister of Education and Culture and teaching assistance program organized by Universitas Negeri Padang. This research uses descriptive research with a random sampling technique involving 15 students who participated in teaching assistance program organized by Minister of Education and Culture and 16 students who participated in teaching assistance program organized by UNP. The research setting is English Education Study Program, Universitas Negeri Padang. Research results were collected through a questionnaire where statements were developed based on (Shinkfield & Stufflebeam, 1995) and an interview based on (Citraningtyas, 2021). The results of the study show that there is no significant difference in students’ perception between teaching assistance program organized by Minister of Education and Culture and teaching assistance program organized by UNP.

Abstract

Translation might be challenging for some people studying English as a second language. In translation process, many students faced some problems. They do not know what factors cause it. Many factors arise during the Indonesian-to-English translation. The goal of this research is to examine the problems faced by students in translating descriptive texts from Indonesian to English, and the factors that contribute to those problems. A descriptive qualitative method was used in analysis data. Students from the English Department who were in their sixth semester participated in this study. The sample was taken by the using cluster random sampling. Data were collected by using translation test and interview. The result shows that, there are five components to the students' problems during the Indonesian to English translation of descriptive text. Word choice, grammatical. rhetorical, pragmatic, and cultural problems are some of them. The result indicates that there five problems in the students’ translation test that should be anticipated in translation class.
