Abstract

Background: COVID-19 pandemic caused globally public health crises. The massive spread of COVID-19 cases put nurses under immense stress due to high workload and thus high risk of infection, especially those in Emergency Room (ER) and Isolation Wards (IW). Both units were actively involved in handling COVID-19 as the first screening and treatment were given to COVID-19 patients. Objectives: Analyze the differences in stress among nurses working in emergency room and isolation room in designated hospitals after the second and third waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The study was designed as comparative descriptive research, with observational and comparative longitudinal approach. There was a 14-month time periods between T1 and T2. The research samples were 33 nurses who working in emergency room (ER) and 32 nurses’ isolation wards (IW) at two hospitals handling COVID-19. Healthcare Workers' Stress questionnaire was used to assess nurse's stress level. Data analysis was performed using the Mann Whitney U Test. Results: The results indicated there were differences levels of stress among the 65 nurses who worked in the emergency room and isolation ward. On average, those Nurses working in the ER experienced lower stress than IW during first wave. By contrast, those Nurses working in IW experienced lower stress than ER during the third wave. There were significant differences on nurses’ stress scores between the two departments during the second wave (p=0.000) and third wave (p=0.036) of COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: This study suggests that nurses need to develop adaptive coping mechanisms to maintain decent nursing care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Attempts to anticipate or resolve the work stress are believed to maintain their performance on par with professional nursing care standards, even during the post-pandemic.

Abstract

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are a prevalent form of Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially those undergoing urinary catheterization. It is estimated that UTIs affect up to 25% of catheterized patients, significantly impacting morbidity and healthcare costs (World Health Organization, 2021). This study aims to determine how health education regarding urogenital hygiene can increase knowledge and prevent infection for patients undergoing urinary catheterization. This research is quantitative descriptive using a case study approach. A one-group pre-test post-test design was employed to collect data through the administration of pre-test and post-test knowledge assessments before and after health education. The results demonstrated a significant increase in knowledge scores from 67 to 93, indicating the effectiveness of health education in enhancing knowledge about urogenital hygiene. Furthermore, observation of signs and symptoms of UTIs showed a decrease in symptoms during the patient's treatment, highlighting the positive impact of health education. Providing urogenital hygiene education effectively increases knowledge and mitigates the risk of UTIs during patient care.

Abstract

Clinical preceptors are essential to nursing education because they help students learn clinical skills and develop as professionals. However, assessing preceptor competency can be challenging due to the lack of standardized and reliable tools. While various tools are available to measure multiple aspects of competency, there is no clear agreement on how these tools should be selected or used across clinical settings. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify and evaluate tools measuring competence of nursing clinical preceptor. The review focused on the instruments and their psychometric qualities, how they are used, and how effective they are in improving clinical education. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify existing instruments used to measure the level of competency of nursing clinical preceptors. Science Direct, Google Scholar, Sage Journal, Pubmed, and Springer were the databases selected for this study. Of the 13 eligible articles in this study, 12 different instruments were found. The instruments found included the Clinical Educators' Competence Questionnaire, Clinical Teaching Competence Inventory, Maastricht Clinical Teaching Questionnaire (MCTQ), Preceptors Orientation Competence Instrument (POCI), Preceptors' Competency Domain Guide Tool, Clinical Core Competency of Preceptors (CCCP), Clinical Preceptor Experience Evaluation Tool (CPEET), Competence of Clinical Nurse Educators Instrument, Nursing Clinical Teacher Effectiveness Inventory (NCTEI), Mentors' Competence Instrument (MCI), Mentorship Effectiveness Scale, IMSOC Questionnaire. Although there are several tools available to evaluate nursing clinical preceptor competency, each has its advantages and disadvantages, according to the review's findings. For a thorough evaluation, the suitable instruments must be chosen depending on particular educational circumstances. The results show that these instruments need to be further developed and standardized to increase their applicability and reliability in a variety of healthcare settings. This will ultimately assist successful preceptorships and raise the caliber of nursing education.

Abstract

Healthy perception is an individual process to interprete the stimulus received by the sense organs, which related to a healthy state that stimulated individuals to adjust behavior as expectation. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between healthy perceptions based on the theory of health belief models and behavior to maintain normal blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes patients. A cross-sectional design was performed 112 respondents using the purposive sampling. The data was collected using the health belief model and the behavior to maintain blood glucose levels questionnaire. Spearman rank test was used to analyse the objective the study. The results showed that the mode value of healthy perception was 108 and median value was 106,5 , with a minimum value of 86 and a maximum value of 119. While the mode value of behavior maintaining blood glucose levels was 27 and median value was 27,5 with a minimum value of 23 and a maximum value of 33. There was a significant correlation between healthy perception behavior of maintaining blood glucose levels (p = <0.011 and r = 0.239) with a low positive correlation between the two variables. It shows that the higher the perception of health, the higher the behavior of maintaining blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Nurses suggested to use the health belief model theory to clarify the perception of type 2 diabetes patients that can influence patients to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
