Abstract

This study employs a quasi-experimental design to explore the effectiveness of the Flipped Classroom strategy in enhancing students' reading skills and motivation using the WhatsApp platform. The quasi-experimental technique measures the measurement results before and after treatment. In addition, this study also seeks a correlation between reading skills and reading motivation. The research participants were seventh graders of a Junior High School in Tana Tidung who were randomly selected into experimental and control classes. The instruments used in this study were a pre-post reading skills test and a pre-post reading motivation questionnaire on two dimensions, namely intrinsic and extrinsic. Both instruments have been tested for validity and reliability before being used in the study. The results showed that the significant value (2 tailed) or (P) of the post-class reading comprehension test obtained by the experimental and control classes was 0.001, which is smaller than 0.05. It is confirmed that there is a significant difference and the quality of the experimental class' results in reading comprehension, which is higher than the control class. Thus, the Flipped Classroom strategy has an impact on improving reading skills. All significant values (2 tailed) or (P) of the post-reading motivation questionnaire in both dimensions obtained by the experimental and control classes also showed significant difference as they reached 0.001, which is smaller than 0.05. In addition, the quality of the experimental class' reading motivation results were higher than the control class. Thus, the Flipped Classroom strategy has a good impact on increasing reading motivation. Meanwhile, the significance values of the Pearson correlation of the post-reading skill test and the post-reading motivation questionnaire in both dimensions obtained by the experimental class are 0.882, 0.629, and 0.522. The control class obtained 0.286, 0.151, and 0.069. These values are more than 0.05. Thus, this shows that students' reading skills are not correlated with reading motivation in the control class. So, it can be concluded that the Flipped Classroom strategy is very appropriate for improving reading skills and reading motivation using WhatsApp platform, but there is no relationship between reading skills and reading motivation. Keywords: Flipped Classroom Strategy, Reading Motivation, Reading Skill, WhatsApp.

Abstract

This study examines how discontinuity in prior English learning, rooted in the Kurikulum Merdeka policy, affects the motivation and engagement of seventh-grade students in East Bintan, Indonesia. Under Kurikulum Merdeka, English is not compulsory at the elementary level, leading to uneven preparedness when students transition to junior high school. A qualitative case study was conducted through classroom observations, questionnaires, and interviews with students and English teachers. Findings reveal that students with prior exposure to English demonstrated greater confidence and persistence, while those without such experience reported anxiety, low self-efficacy, and reluctance to engage. Teachers also struggled to balance instruction due to the wide gap in readiness. The results indicate that discontinuity not only hampers academic performance but also undermines emotional and behavioral motivation. The study concludes that bridging strategies, such as differentiated instruction, remedial support, and teacher professional development, are essential to mitigate the motivational gaps created by curriculum discontinuity.

Abstract

This study investigates the professional development and support systems required to enhance junior high school EFL teachers’ readiness in implementing the deep learning-oriented Kurikulum Merdeka in Bintan Regency, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Findings indicate that while teachers demonstrated moderate to high readiness in effort, willingness, and capacity, sustaining deep learning practices was constrained by limited professional development opportunities, infrastructural challenges, and insufficient systemic support. Teachers identified the need for continuous practice-based professional development, access to digital resources, peer collaboration through MGMP (teacher working groups) and school-based learning communities, and structured mentoring programs. Systemic supports such as improved infrastructure, manageable class sizes, and context-sensitive policy implementation were also considered crucial. The study underscores the importance of aligning professional development initiatives with the real-world challenges faced by teachers in diverse educational contexts, ensuring that the implementation of curriculum reform is both sustainable and equitable.

Abstract

This research explores the impact of using Google Sites for Differentiated Instruction on the learning motivation and reading comprehension of Grade XI students at SMK Negeri 4 Banjarmasin. The study aims to enhance literacy by integrating digital media into English narrative text instruction. A quasi-experimental design was employed, with an experimental group using Google Sites and a control group using conventional methods. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests measuring reading comprehension and questionnaire to describe learning motivation. The Independent Sample T-Test, Mann Whitney Test and N-Gain, and Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) were used for statistical analysis. The results indicated that the experimental group showed significant improvements in both learning motivation and reading comprehension compared to the control group. The use of Google Sites provided a personalized and engaging learning experience, contributing to these positive outcomes. In conclusion, integrating Google Sites into Differentiated Instruction effectively enhances students' motivation and reading comprehension. This approach addresses individual learning needs and leverages technology to create a more interactive educational environment. The study suggests broader implementation of digital tools in education to improve literacy skills and student engagement.

Abstract

Distance Education has great potential to become a model for the world's future education. The rapid development of technology, the demands of the global professional world, as well as various extraordinary events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic which could recur at any time, are the main reasons for the need to implement distance education. Therefore, to maintain the existence of distance education, research is needed that can look at perceptions of brand equity, namely brand awareness and brand association with perceived quality. This research aims to explain how society accepts open and distance state colleges, particularly among students in Indonesia. The research subjects were 812 respondents obtained through probability sampling using multistage random sampling from three regions in Indonesia, namely Vocational High School Bina Warga Bandung representing western Indonesia, Public High School 16 Makassar representing Central Indonesia, and Public High School 1 Jayapura representing the eastern part of Indonesia. The results of the research show that there is a strong relationship between brand awareness and community brand association on the desire to continue studying at open and distance higher education institutions. This research providing recommendations for PTJJ should not only focus on promotion/marketing strategies to increase interest in continuing community studies at PTJJ but also focus on strategies that can increase brand equity.
