Abstract

Background. Language plays a fundamental role in shaping and reflecting identity, particularly in multicultural societies where diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds intersect. The relationship between language, identity, and ideology is complex, as discourse both constructs and reflects social realities, power dynamics, and cultural values. Understanding how language operates in such contexts is crucial for exploring how ideologies are communicated and contested. Purpose. This study aims to examine the interplay between language, identity, and ideology in multicultural societies through a sociolinguistic analysis of discourse. It seeks to understand how language is used to construct social identities, negotiate cultural differences, and reinforce or challenge dominant ideologies within diverse communities. Method. A qualitative sociolinguistic approach is employed, using discourse analysis to examine a range of spoken and written texts from multicultural settings. Data sources include media, political speeches, and everyday conversations. The analysis focuses on how linguistic choices reflect identity construction and ideological positioning. Results. The findings reveal that language is a powerful tool for constructing social identities, with speakers strategically using linguistic features to align themselves with particular cultural or political groups. Ideological discourses are often reinforced through language, but also provide spaces for resistance and the negotiation of power relations. Conclusion. This study demonstrates the significant role of language in shaping identity and ideology in multicultural societies, highlighting the need for continued research into how language practices contribute to social dynamics and political discourse.

Abstract

Abstract

Syntactic competence is foundational to children’s literacy development; however, empirical research on how elementary learners construct sentences in response to specific interrogative prompts remains limited in Indonesian linguistic scholarship. Although prior studies have normatively described canonical sentence patterns or assessed general syntactic complexity, few have investigated the structural variations elicited by different question words. This study describes and analyzes the syntactic variations produced by fourth-grade students in response to five Indonesian interrogatives (where, how, who, why, what) and maps these responses onto the six canonical sentence patterns of Indonesian. Using a qualitative descriptive design and content analysis, the study examined students’ written responses to a narrative reading comprehension task. Each answer was parsed for syntactic function and evaluated against the framework of Standard Indonesian Grammar. Trustworthiness was ensured through thick description and inter-analyst triangulation. The findings reveal that each interrogative elicits a distinct range of syntactic realizations: full, elliptical, and compound with why producing the most elaborate, multi-clausal constructions. All observed variations align systematically with the six canonical patterns, indicating that ellipsis functions as a pragmatically motivated strategy rather than a syntactic deficiency. This study enriches the descriptive understanding of Indonesian child syntax and provides a diagnostic tool for elementary language instruction.

Abstract

Language acquisition is a dynamic process, especially during the formative years of childhood. This research delves into the depths of psycholinguistics to explore the effectiveness of using cartoons as a dynamic tool in enhancing lexical enrichment in the development of English vocabulary. The study aims to ascertain the influence of cartoons on the development of students' English vocabulary using psycholinguistic theory. This research adopts a qualitative approach. The data for this study pertain to the development of students' English vocabulary, with cartoons serving as the primary source of data. Data were collected through participant observation, with the researcher observing students' language acquisition and lexical mastery in the classroom. Additionally, interviews were conducted with students and English language teachers regarding the enhancement of students' English vocabulary acquisition, employing the recording technique. Once the data were collected, the researcher transcribed the speech data into written form, documenting the vocabulary acquired by students after watching cartoons. Subsequently, the data underwent reduction, classification, and analysis. The results of this study indicate several influences of cartoons on the development of students' language skills, including enhanced understanding of the English language, acquisition of new vocabulary, improved listening skills, introduction to culture and context, enjoyable learning experiences, comprehension of expressions and emotions, and the cultivation of speaking skills. Consequently, cartoons can be considered valuable learning aids, although it is advisable to use them in conjunction with more structured learning methods, such as English courses, textbooks, or tutors, to achieve more optimal learning outcomes.

Abstract

Background. Language plays a pivotal role in shaping political power and influencing public opinion. Through syntax, rhetorical strategies, and discourse structures, political and media discourses manipulate language to persuade, construct ideologies, and reinforce power dynamics. Understanding the linguistic strategies used in these contexts is essential for analyzing how political narratives are constructed and how media discourse frames societal issues. Purpose. This study aims to explore the syntactic and linguistic strategies employed in political and media discourse, focusing on how these strategies serve to exert power, persuade audiences, and reinforce ideological structures. The research seeks to identify common patterns of persuasion and power dynamics within language use and to evaluate their impact on public perception. Method. A qualitative approach is used, with a combination of discourse analysis and syntactic analysis to examine political speeches, media articles, and televised debates. Data is collected from a range of political figures, media outlets, and speeches within the last decade to assess the contemporary use of language as a tool for persuasion and ideological influence. Results. The findings indicate that political and media discourses employ complex syntactic structures, including parallelism, modality, and presupposition, to assert authority and influence audience beliefs. These strategies are closely tied to ideological positioning, with frequent use of inclusive language to consolidate power and exclusive language to marginalize opposition. Conclusion. This research highlights the role of syntax in shaping political and media narratives. Understanding these linguistic strategies allows for a deeper analysis of how power and persuasion function within public discourse, contributing to the manipulation of public opinion and the reinforcement of social and political hierarchies.

Abstract

Background. The globalization of languages has led to significant morphological changes and semantic shifts across linguistic systems. As languages come into contact with each other through trade, migration, and technological advancement, their structures evolve to accommodate new social and cultural realities. Understanding how these changes manifest and what they reveal about language use in a globalized world is crucial for both linguistics and cultural studies. Purpose. This study aims to investigate the morphological changes and semantic shifts occurring in languages under the influence of globalization. Specifically, it examines how lexical items from dominant global languages (e.g., English) are integrated into other linguistic systems, and how their meanings and forms transform in the process. Method. A cross-linguistic comparative approach is employed, focusing on a selection of languages that have been significantly influenced by global languages. Data were collected from corpora, texts, and spoken language samples across multiple languages. The study applies both qualitative and quantitative methods, including morphological analysis and semantic mapping. Results. The study finds that globalization has led to both the simplification of morphological structures and the expansion of semantic fields, particularly in languages with extensive borrowing from global lingua franca languages. In many cases, the meaning of loanwords shifts to fit local contexts and cultural nuances. Conclusion. This research highlights the dynamic nature of language change in response to globalization, providing insights into how languages adapt and transform in a globally interconnected world.
