Abstract

Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is a prevalent inherited mitral valve condition. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical manifestation of the cardiac condition MMVD in Poodles. Using ultrasonography (USG), this study examined the characteristics, progression, diagnosis, and treatment of MMVD in an 11-year-old Poodle. This case study was conducted at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, utilizing a Chison Ebit60 with an 8–12 MHz curvilinear probe. The dog was positioned in the right parasternal recumbency position, and the long axis (RPLA) and short axis (RPSA) views were obtained. In the evaluation and diagnosis, B-Mode, M-Mode, and Color Flow Doppler (CFD) modes of ultrasonography were performed. The dog presented with coughing, and the physical examination revealed a grade 3–4 murmur. Based on B-mode cardiac monitoring, sinus arrhythmia, mitral valve thickness, and prolapses indicate MMVD. Mitral regurgitation was indicated by a decrease in heart rate and an increase in the left ventricle internal dimension (LVIDd) on the M-mode. Meanwhile, CFD's representation of turbulent flow confirmed mitral regurgitation results. The rise in blood pressure confirmed the presence of hypertension. Class B2 MMVD in Poodles has consequently been diagnosed in this case.

Abstract

This research aims to study the effectiveness of single placenta stem cell therapy (ST) or a combination of cardiomyocyte co-cultures in pigs with myocardial infarction based on enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity as well as liver histopathology. Nine pigs were divided into three treatment groups (K1, K2, and K3) consisting of three pigs per group. Blood sampling was performed one-hour pre-surgery, post-ST-elevation, and eight weeks post-therapy. The experimental animals were treated for eight weeks, then euthanized and necropsied for liver removal. ALT and AST values were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and followed by Tukey's test. Histopathological changes in liver tissue were analyzed using Image J 1.53 software, and the measured data were analyzed using oneway ANOVA. The results showed an increase in the ALT and AST values of the three treatment groups on post-ST-elevation blood sampling but were still within normal limits except for K1. ALT and AST values decreased significantly (P0.05) in the group treated with single placental stem cell (K2) or combined cardiomyocyte co-culture (K3). The ALT value of K3 decreased but not significantly (P0.05) compared to K2. The AST value of K3 decreased significantly (P0.05) but was not significantly different (P0.05) compared to K2. The liver tissue showed circulatory disturbances in the central venous congestion, portal vein, sinusoidal dilatation and congestion, and hepatocyte changes in the form of centrilobular necrosis and hydropic degeneration. Stem cell therapy alone (K2) or in combination with cardiomyocyte co-culture (K3) had similar percentage of centrilobular necrosis which was significantly lower than K1 (P0.05). Hepatocyte hydropic degeneration on K2 was classified as mild, whereas on K3 was classified as moderate. As conclusion, administration of placental stem cell therapy alone or in combination with cardiomyocyte co-culture can reduce ALT and AST values and could repair liver tissue.

Abstract

Pencitraan Ultrasonografi (USG) ginjal dapat memberikan informasi struktur internal organ yang bermanfaat, terlebih apabila dikombinasikan dengan parameter kimia darah seperti profil Symmetric Dimethylarginine (SDMA). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk deteksi dini perubahan morfometri dan fisiologis pada ginjal serta mengevaluasi apakah terdapat kaitan mengenai kesehatan ginjal dengan latihan fisik. Sampel yang digunakan adalah 6 ekor anjing ras Belgian malinois dengan umur 3 - 4 tahun. Tiga ekor anjing merupakan anjing yang aktif dilatih dan 3 ekor lainnya adalah anjing yang tidak aktif dilatih. Pemeriksaan USG dilakukan pada posisi hewan right and left lateral dengan microconvex probe frekuensi 5 – 8 MHz. Sampel darah diambil sebanyak 0.5 ml melalui v. cephalica dan dilakukan pemeriksaan SDMA. Hasil pengukuran menunjukan rasio panjang ginjal:aorta pada anjing aktif adalah 6.02, 6.85, dan 6.87, sedangkan pada anjing tidak aktif adalah 5.76, 6.36, dan 5.5. Nilai SDMA pada anjing aktif adalah 10, 11, dan 8 µg/dL, sedangkan pada anjing tidak aktif adalah 12, 11, dan 15 µg/dL. Hasil ini menunjukan bahwa anjing yang aktif berlatih memiliki ukuran ginjal yang lebih besar dibandingkan dengan anjing yang tidak aktif dilatih. Hasil SDMA pada ketiga anjing yang aktif berada pada rentang normal. Terdapat 1 ekor anjing yang memiliki nilai SDMA diatas rentang normal pada anjing yang tidak aktif dilatih, yang mengindikasikan mengalami chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 1 menurut International Renal Interest Society (IRIS). Berdasarkan penelitian ini, aktifitas fisik mempengaruhi morfometri ginjal tanpa mengganggu fungsi ginjal anjing Belgian Malinois di Badan Narkotika Nasional (BNN).

Abstract

Penelitian gangguan sistem kardiovaskular semakin berkembang dilakukan pada hewan model. Babi merupakan hewan model yang umum digunakan dalam penelitian biomedis. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui nilai normal ekokardiografi jantung babi (Sus scrofa domestica) jantan dan betina. Babi yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 12 ekor babi yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini dengan usia 3 sampai 4 bulan dengan rata-rata berat badan 55 Kg (52 sampai 69 Kg). Pemeriksaan ekokardiografi transtorakalis dengan posisi right parasternal (RPS) long-axis (LAx) dan short-axis (SAx) menggunakan transduser phase-array probe dengan frekuensi 2.5-6.0 MHz yang dilakukan pada babi dalam kondisi teranestesi. Posisi RPS-SAx bertujuan menilai bentuk dan struktur dari ventrikel kiri jantung babi, sedangkan RPS-LAx bertujuan membandingkan dimensi antara ventrikel serta melihat pergerakan katup mitral jantung. Hasil pemeriksaan ekokardiografi menunjukkan bahwa struktur dari ventrikel kiri babi yang dapat terlihat adalah interventricular septum (IVS), left ventricle (LV), left ventricle wall (LVW), pericardium (P), papillary muscle (PM), dan right ventricle (RV). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai pada parameter frekuensi jantung (HR), left ventricular internal dimension at end-diastole (LVIDd), dan stroke volume (SV) menunjukkan hasil yang berbeda secara signifikan, sedangkan parameter lainnya memiliki hasil yang tidak signifikan antara jantan dan betina. Nilai ekokardiografi normal pada babi ini dapat digunakan sebagai acuan dalam penelitian kardiovaskular lanjut yang menggunakan babi sebagai hewan model.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Open reduction and internal fixation are considered the gold standard for managing mandibular fractures, as they effectively restore anatomical structure and functionality. Three-dimensional (3D) miniplates were developed to obtain a geometrically stable structure. However, the rigid structure of 3D miniplate may cause screw holes to be located within the fracture lines or directly above important anatomical structures. Hence, we have developed customizable interlocking 3D miniplates that allow for modifications in the configuration of the horizontal miniplates and vertical cross-struts to meet specific requirements. METHODS This study included 24 goats divided into 2 groups: interlocking 3D miniplate and standard plate. Each group was further divided into subgroups sacrificed on Days 5, 28, and 56. Radiological assessments were performed to evaluate bone, muscle, peri-implant bone, and peri-implant muscle density. Histological assessments were performed using Masson's trichome (MT) for bone healing evaluation and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining for biocompatibility. RESULTS Radiological assessment indicated an increase in density across all measured parameters from Day 5 to 56. Histological evaluation from MT staining showed a significantly higher fibrocartilage in the interlocking 3D miniplate group (6.109%, IQR 1.453–10.828) compared to standard plate (1.311%, IQR 0.636–2.553; p = 0.001). Furthermore, H&E staining showed significantly higher inflammatory cell counts in the standard group on Days 28 and 56 compared to the interlocking 3D miniplate group (p = 0.027). CONCLUSIONS This study concluded that the interlocking 3D miniplate showed better bone healing properties and biocompatibility than the standard plate.

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is still the leading cause of death according to WHO in 2021. CVD generally results in myocardial infarction (MI), which occurred after tissue ischemia. Echocardiography is most likely a diagnostic tool without invasive effects. This study aimed to compare the blood flow in pig research animals treated with ligases of the circumflex arteries. Measurements were made in the mitral valve (MV), tricuspid valve (TV), semilunar pulmonary valve (SLP), and semilunar aortic valve (AO) of velocity during systole (Vs), velocity during diastole (Vd), time average peak velocity (TAMAX), and blood flow pressure at three-time points: before ligase treatment, after acute infarction (60 min), and 8 weeks after ligase treatment. All parameters in MV group increased at 60 min and decreased at 8th weeks. On TV, TAMAX and pTAMAX decreased at 60 min and week 8. In SLP, VS, pVS, and Vd decreased at 60 min and increased at 8th week. The pVd and pTAMAX parameters decreased at 60 min and 8th week, while TAMAX increased at 60 min and decreased at 8th week. In AO, the TAMAX and pTAMAX parameters increased at 60 min and 8 weeks; the other parameters were similar to MV and TV patterns.

Abstract

Ovariohisterektomi banyak dilakukan pada hewan kecil dan sering kali mengalami komplikasi berupa luka yang terbuka. Studi ini mengevaluasi dua teknik jahitan, yaitu jahitan intradermal kontinu yang terkubur (BCID) dan jahitan terputus sederhana (SI), pada 42 kucing betina menggunakan jahitan nilon yang tidak dapat diserap. Berat, panjang sayatan, panjang jahitan, dan waktu penutupan juga dianalisis. Penilaian pascaoperasi pada 18-24 jam dan 5-7 hari meliputi pemantauan pembengkakan, eritema, eksudat, dan terbukanya luka. Hasilnya menunjukkan insiden komplikasi yang jauh lebih tinggi, terutama terbukanya luka, pada kelompok SI. Akibatnya, BCID direkomendasikan karena tingkat komplikasinya yang lebih rendah dan risiko infeksi akibat trauma diri yang berkurang.

Abstract

Antibiotic resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have been reported around the world. The aim of this study was to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of CoNS isolated from red–tailed racers. Samples were swabbed from the oral cavity of 5 wild caught red–tailed racers, and were identified with biochemical test using the Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion test interpreted by referring to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. The results obtained 4 species of CoNS isolated from swab samples including S. sciuri, S. xylosus, S. lentus, and S. kloosii. The antibiotic resistance test of S. xylosus, S. sciuri, and S. lentus showed susceptibility to amoxicillin, gentamicin, erythromycin, bacitracin, vancomycin and oxacillin, but resistance towards penicillin G. S. sciuri isolated from snake number 1 was intermediate towards erythromycin. S. kloosii showed susceptibility towards amoxicillin, gentamicin, bacitracin, penicillin G, vancomycin, and oxacillin, but was resistant towards erythromycin

Abstract

Iopamidol merupakan media kontras yang larut dalam air dan bersifat non-ionik. Tulisan ini melaporkan efektifitas penggunaan iopamidol pada seekor kucing domestik jantan berusia 3 tahun, memiliki bobot badan 6 kg, yang dibawa oleh pemiliknya ke klinik dengan keluhan tidak defekasi selama 5 hari dan memiliki nafsu makan yang baik. Pemeriksaan penunjang dilakukan dengan radiografi kontras gastrointestinal dengan menggunakan iopamidol. Pengambilan x-ray dilakukan pada menit ke-0, 30, 60, 150 dan 240. Motilitas gastrointestinal dievaluasi dengan penilaian semi kuantitatif. Kucing terlihat tidak mengalami gangguan motilitas lambung dan usus halus, namun obstruksi ditemukan pada usus besar. Tidak terlihat adanya efek samping maupun komplikasi dari penggunaan iopamidol baik selama prosedur maupun sampai hari ke 5 setelah prosedur. Iopamidol dinilai dapat dijadikan sebagai bahan kontras gastrointestinal.

Abstract

This study aims to study the effectiveness of single placental stem cell therapy or cardiomyocyte combination in pigs experiencing myocardial infarction in terms of urea, creatinine and kidney organ histopathology values. A total of 9 pigs were divided int o three groups: without therapy (K1), single placental stem cell therapy (K2), and cardiomyocyte coculture combination therapy (K3). All pigs underwent circumflex artery ligation of the proximal coronary artery branch to stimulate cardiac ischemia and therapy was given after myocardial infarction and ST-elevation were formed. The pigs were then treated for eight weeks, euthanized and necropsied for kidney organ removal. The re sults showed a significant decrease in urea and creatinine values (P0.05) in K2 and K3 as compared to K1. Histopathology results showed a decrease in glomerular atrophy values (K2: 10.260.93 and K3: 12.441.21), tubular necrosis (K2: 13.673.76 and K3: 17.230.55), and tubular dilation (K2: 16.361.26 and K3: 18.031.76) and these values were significantly different than those observed in K1. It was concluded that the administration of placental stem cell therapy or combined with cardiomyocyte coculture could reduce urea, creatinine values, and improve kidney tissue histopathologically.
