Abstract

Stunting remains a critical issue that constrains children's physical growth and cognitive development. Limited nutritional literacy among elementary school students further reinforces unhealthy eating behaviors that persist over time. This study aims to analyze, develop, and validate a structured game-based nutrition education model to enhance students’ understanding of nutritional concepts. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The subjects consisted of 100 elementary school students in grades III–V, classroom teachers, and three expert validators specializing in nutrition, public health, and instructional design. Data were collected through needs analysis questionnaires, expert validation instruments, classroom observations, and student and teacher response questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted using the Content Validity Index (CVI) and descriptive statistics. The findings indicate that the developed model demonstrates high validity (CVI = 0.89) and effectively improves students’ engagement, motivation, and conceptual understanding of nutrition. Teachers also reported that the model is practical, adaptable, and supports active learning. Therefore, the game-based nutrition education model is considered valid and feasible for implementation as an educational intervention strategy to prevent stunting. The study implies the importance of integrating innovative learning approaches into nutrition education at the elementary level.

Abstract

Anemia and undernutrition frequently coexist in early childhood and may reinforce one another through inadequate nutrient intake, impaired erythropoiesis, infection, and reduced appetite. This study analyzed the association between nutritional status and anemia among children under five years of age at Abdul Manap Regional Hospital, Jambi. An analytical observational study with a retrospective case-control approach used secondary medical-record data from 2019–2023. Ninety-two children were included, comprising 46 anemia cases and 46 non-anemia controls. Nutritional status was assessed using weight-for-height indicators based on World Health Organization child growth standards. Univariate analysis described participant characteristics, and the Chi-square test with an odds ratio estimated the association between nutritional status and anemia. Most participants were aged 13–36 months (55.4%) and male (63.0%). Undernutrition predominated in the anemia group (56.5%), whereas normal nutritional status predominated among controls (63.0%). Nutritional status was significantly associated with anemia (p=0.002); undernourished children had 4.31 times the odds of anemia compared with children with normal or excess nutritional status (95% CI: 1.79–10.39). These findings support integrated nutritional assessment, caregiver education, and routine anemia screening for young children.

Abstract

Infectious diseases remain a public health problem in urban areas, particularly in densely populated settlements with poor environmental conditions. Inadequate household waste management and substandard sanitation can significantly increase the risk of disease transmission. This study aimed to analyze household waste management and environmental sanitation as determinants of infectious disease incidence among urban communities. A cross-sectional design was employed involving 120 households selected through stratified random sampling based on residential density levels. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and an observation checklist to assess waste management practices, sanitation conditions, and the occurrence of infectious diseases within the past three months. Data were analyzed using Chi-square tests with a 5% significance level. The results showed that 56.7% of households had poor waste management practices, and 52.5% had inadequate sanitation. Infectious diseases were reported in 40% of households. There was a significant association between poor waste management and infectious disease incidence (p=0.01; OR=3.77; 95% CI=1.71–8.31), as well as between inadequate sanitation and disease occurrence (p=0.02; OR=3.29; 95% CI=1.52–7.09). This study concludes that environmental factors, particularly household waste management and sanitation conditions, play an important role in increasing the risk of infectious diseases in urban settings. Strengthening sanitation infrastructure, implementing community-based waste management, and enhancing public health education are essential strategies to prevent environmentally transmitted infections and promote healthier urban environments.

Abstract

Post-cesarean section (CS) pain is a clinical problem that can hinder early mobilization, breastfeeding, and patient recovery. The Transversus Abdominis Plane (TAP) block is a regional analgesia technique developed as part of multimodal analgesia to reduce postoperative somatic pain following a cesarean section. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Transversus Abdominis Plane (TAP) block on pain scores in patients following a cesarean section at Raden Mattaher General Hospital in Jambi. A prospective cohort study was conducted on 20 patients who had undergone cesarean section (SC), divided into a TAP block group (n=10) and a no-TAP-block group (n=10). Sampling was performed using consecutive sampling. Pain levels were measured using the VAS score at 4, 6, 12, and 24 hours post-surgery. Analysis was performed using the Mann–Whitney test for data that were not normally distributed and the independent t-test for normally distributed data, with a significance level of p<0.05. The TAP block group showed lower pain scores than the group without a TAP block at all observation times. However, there were no statistically significant differences in VAS scores at 4 hours (p=0.178), 6 hours (p=0.054), 12 hours (p=0.230), 24 hours (p=0.298), or in the mean VAS score (p=0.097). A history of cesarean section was significantly associated with pain scores at 24 hours postoperatively. The TAP block has not been statistically proven to effectively reduce the severity of post-cesarean section pain in this study, although it showed a tendency to result in lower pain scores compared to the group without a TAP block

Abstract

Improperly managed solid waste from palm oil mills and cattle manure has the potential to cause environmental pollution and unpleasant odors and to serve as a breeding ground for disease vectors. Converting such waste into organic fertilizer represents one strategy for supporting sustainable environmental management while simultaneously enhancing the economic value accruing to the community. This community service activity aimed to improve farmers' knowledge and skills in producing organic fertilizer and to develop added value through packaging and marketing strategies. The activity was carried out with the Srigati Farmers' Group in Sido Mukti Village, Dendang Subdistrict, East Tanjung Jabung Regency, using a technical guidance method comprising material delivery, demonstration, hands-on practice in organic fertilizer production, packaging practice using pre-prepared mature compost, and discussion on business development. Evaluation was conducted through observation of participant engagement, a pretest–posttest assessment, and a satisfaction survey. The evaluation results indicated an increase in participants' knowledge following the technical guidance, accompanied by a high level of satisfaction with the training materials and methods. Most participants also expressed readiness to sustainably apply organic-fertilizer production technology. The activity effectively enhanced community capacity to convert organic waste into economically valuable fertilizer, while promoting more environmentally friendly waste management, supporting environmental health, and strengthening the development of organic-fertilizer enterprises grounded in local potential toward sustainable agriculture Keywords: compost, organic waste, sustainable agriculture, environmental sustainability, community economic empowerment

Abstract

Water spinach is among the vegetables most consumed by residents of Jambi City and is also a hyperaccumulator plant that readily absorbs heavy metals, particularly lead. Lead is chronically toxic, and exposure to it may damage the nervous system, cause anaemia, and impair kidney function. This study aimed to identify and compare lead levels in water spinach sold at traditional markets and supermarkets in Jambi City against the limit of BPOM Regulation Number 9 of 2022, namely 0.2 mg/kg. The study was quantitative descriptive with a laboratory approach. A total of 96 samples, consisting of 81 samples from 13 traditional markets and 15 samples from 10 supermarkets across 10 districts, were collected using accidental sampling. Lead levels were measured by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 283.3 nm following wet digestion. The results showed that 54 of 96 samples (56.3%) exceeded the safe limit. In traditional markets, 47 of 81 samples (58.0%) did not meet the requirement, with a mean of 0.3162 mg/kg, whereas in supermarkets 7 of 15 samples (46.7%) did not meet the requirement, with a mean of 0.2705 mg/kg. The highest level, 0.8471 mg/kg, was found in a supermarket. It is concluded that most water spinach at traditional markets and supermarkets in Jambi City contains lead exceeding the safe limit.
