Abstract

The microlearning method has been accelerating and facilitating the pedagogical approach to developing teachers as professionals in 21st-century learning. However, research into English speaking learning materials, particularly microlearning-based English speaking learning materials for the teachers in Agam District, West Sumatra, is limited and urged. This study reports the development of Common European Framework (CEFR) and microlearning-based spoken production learning materials for teachers of junior high schools in Agam through the workshop. The findings revealed that the teachers’ competence was significantly positive in developing learning materials based on microlearning. They become skillful and able to design microlearning-based English-spoken materials for their context and their needs. Their expertise can have an impact on the teachers in Agam and act as a socializing agent for the other teachers in West Sumatra

Abstract

The knowledge of machine translation has great importance in the pre-translation process, particularly when translating a literary work. There were a plethora of studies about the translation of cultural-specific items (CSI) with machines. However, they have not addressed machine translation post-editing to improve its translation. This study aims at describing the semantic analysis in the translation of cultural-specific items (CSI) by machine translation (MT) from Indonesian into English, analyzing their translation and whether or not they have similar meanings between the source text and target text to get a better quality translation. Qualitative research using descriptive methods was applied. The data were 12 sentences of CSI in the form of concrete and five sentences of CSI regarding socio-cultural terms from the short story of Betawi folklore entitled Angan-Angan si Muin (Muin's Wishful Thinking). The result revealed that the 2nd generated the better translation in concrete. Both machine translations (MT) produced different translations for translating CSI of socio-cultural terms. Therefore, post-editing is taken to improve their translation with semantic analysis of relation meaning with primary considerations such as material, shape, size, function, and description. Machines translator (MT) helps us to work efficiently and improve accuracy. But, the results of machine translations must still be reviewed by human translators to ensure key quality requirements are satisfied, including fidelity or correctness, intelligibility or clarity, and style, so we need post-editing translation.

Abstract

Intercultural Communication Competence (ICC) is becoming more important nowadays because of the modern social issues in society. Previous studies tried to insert ICC into English Language Teaching (ELT) in order to help solving these issues. However, little attention has been paid to the dimension and components of ICC. Library research method was conducted with the script of the speech from Helena Merschdorf regarding intercultural communication as the primary source and several other books and articles as secondary resources. There are two primary aims of this study: 1. To analyse the components and dimensions of ICC based on Helena Merschdorf’s speech. 2. To know the components and dimensions of ICC based on Helena Merschdorf’s speech that can be inserted in ELT. The result indicate that the speech include all components and dimesions of ICC and each component and dimension of ICC can be inserted into ELT.

Abstract

The emergence of mobile learning applications facilitates the pedagogical approach to developing students’ critical thinking. However, there is a scarcity of investigation on mobile learning applications’ impact on developing critical thinking as the learning outcome. Thus, this study reports the effect of a mobile learning application, ‘English with Noni’, designed to infuse critical thinking instruction in EFL classes on students’ critical thinking level by employing a sequential explanatory mixed-method approach. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to examine the critical thinking level of 65 students of a junior high school in Jakarta, Indonesia, by administering a post-test assessed using a SOLO rubric. Semi-structured interviews to explore students’ responses from using the ‘English with Noni’ application and class observation contributed to the qualitative findings. The quantitative result showed that the critical thinking level of the experimental group using this application improved significantly more than the controlled group did. The qualitative result suggested that the experimental group had positive responses to using it. They confirmed that it was interesting. They also admitted that it contributed to developing their critical thinking (i.e., predicting, providing reasons, expressing viewpoints, finding alternatives, and making conclusions), language skills (i.e., listening, reading, and writing), and sub-skill (vocabulary). The findings imply that critical thinking activities and learning affordances provided in the ‘English with Noni’ application is a potential tool to enhance students’ critical thinking infused in the EFL class, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic situation, by emphasizing self-regulated learning.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the differences in professional development for digital competence (PDC) levels between digital immigrant and digital native teachers. A total of 49 teachers participated in the study. Data was collected through an online survey that measured their PDC levels in seven domains: Subject and Basic Skills, School in Society, Ethics, Pedagogy and Subject Didactics, Leadership of Learning Processes, Interaction and Communication, and Change and Development. The results indicated that there were slight differences between the PDC levels of digital immigrant and digital native teachers. Digital immigrant teachers had higher percentages at the none level and the skills level, while digital native teachers had higher percentages at the knowledge level and the competence level. The findings suggest that both groups of teachers have relatively high levels of PDC, indicating that they are capable of using technology effectively in their teaching practices. The study highlights the importance of ongoing professional development for both groups to ensure they are equipped with the necessary digital competencies to effectively support their students in the digital age. The PDC framework can be a useful tool for identifying areas of strength and weakness for both digital learner groups, and can guide the development of targeted professional development programs.
