Abstract

In debating activities, especially political debates, a speaker does not always issue arguments in the same way. Sometimes the speaker conveys his ideas kindly and gently, sometimes with diction that seems to have negative connotations, sometimes even silent and says nothing. Therefore, this study will analyze in depth the speech strategies produced by Indonesian officials and politicians in a political debate on the YouTube channel. The method used is qualitative with a note-taking technique. The source of the research data used was speech from officials and politicians in a debate event on the Indonesia Lawyers Club (ILC) YouTube channel. Data analysis was carried out through transcription and interpretation of spoken strategies from Brown and Levinson. The results showed that an unceremonious strategy was used to chime in on insubstantial unceremoniously unceremonious speech opponents. Furthermore, positive civility strategies usually tend to be used in political policy debates by parties who support or represent political policyholders. The strategy of negative politeness in political debates is usually used by speakers from the opposition who provide criticism of political policies. Furthermore, vague strategies are used by speakers in political debates as a way to suppress and provide resistance to the ideas spoken, no matter whether the ideas of the speech partners are complete or not. Finally, there is no silent or silent strategy to speak silently.

Abstract

Speaking skills are essential language skills to master in the digital era. Indonesian teachers are therefore challenged to develop approaches and materials according to the development of students in this era. Gamification is an approach that Indonesian language teachers can develop to be more effective and make students involved in learning. This study intends to further explore gamification's effectiveness in learning speaking skills. The research is a quasi-experimental study involving 34 students of class XI IPS MAN 4 Jakarta in one learning session. All students were involved in total sampling and received treatment as a whole without a control group. The data were observed using a questionnaire according to the curriculum target and analyzed by frequency distribution. The results showed that gamification improved students' abilities, learning motivation, and engagement. The implication is that the gamification designed in this study can be further developed in accordance with the study's limitations. The game can also be developed digitally.

Abstract

Abstract

This study was qualitative research using content analysis that aimed to investigate to what extent high order thinking skills (HOTS) are incorporated in the reading exercises of English textbook for 11th graders and to describe how HOTS are incorporated in the reading exercises. This study used Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy (BRT) table and the table of description was used to examine 107 essay reading exercises that come after every reading passage in a textbook published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. The findings showed that (1) the HOTS in the reading questions were available in 50 questions (46,7%) while the LOTS were in 57 questions (53,3%). (2) The HOTS questions required students to analyze the storyline from the reading passage, to argue their opinion or judge if they liked the reading text, to assess their own knowledge as their awareness were raised or changed toward the topic, and the last to create a new ending of the story. The findings of this research are expected to be the references for teachers to check the incorporation of HOTS in the exercises before they give to the students.

Abstract

Reading has long been one of the most crucial skills individuals should master to function effectively in society. Due to the revolutionary penetration of information and communication technology (ICT) into almost all aspects of human life, reading has transformed from paper-based to screen-based. Thus, facilitating students to cultivate digital reading should be one of the educational priorities. This study aims at exploring the digital reading habits of students majoring in English as a foreign language (EFL) in Indonesian context. Employing a mixed-methods design, quantitative and qualitative data were collected using an online questionnaire including close-ended and open-ended questions from 79 students of the English Language Education Study Program of Universitas Kristen Indonesia, Jakarta. The results show that a majority of the participants prefer to read in English in digital reading mode due to several reasons. Their most favorable tool for reading is smartphones. Additionally, a majority of them prefer to read at home as far as they have good access to the internet. Finally, based on the analysis of the motivational and de-motivational factors of reading, the participants’ preference towards digital reading has a stronger motivational foundation than print reading.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the digital competence of 102 pre-service English language teachers and identified areas of strength and weakness. A questionnaire aligned with the European Framework for Educators' Digital Competence (DigCompEdu) was used to assess self-perceived competence in various digital areas. The findings revealed strengths in organizational communication, professional collaboration, managing and sharing digital resources, guidance, collaborative and self-regulated learning, accessibility and inclusion, and digital content creation. However, reflective practice and analyzing evidence were identified as areas of relative weakness. The study highlighted the need for targeted training programs and curriculum enhancements to address these gaps. Enhancing the digital competence of pre-service teachers is crucial for effective integration of technology in language instruction. By addressing strengths and weaknesses, the study emphasized the importance of comprehensive digital education programs that go beyond assuming digital natives possess advanced skills. Improving digital competence among pre-service teachers can enhance the quality of language education and provide better learning experiences for students.

Abstract

The emergence of mobile learning applications facilitates the pedagogical approach to developing students’ critical thinking. However, there is a scarcity of investigation on mobile learning applications’ impact on developing critical thinking as the learning outcome. Thus, this study reports the effect of a mobile learning application, ‘English with Noni’, designed to infuse critical thinking instruction in EFL classes on students’ critical thinking level by employing a sequential explanatory mixed-method approach. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to examine the critical thinking level of 65 students of a junior high school in Jakarta, Indonesia, by administering a post-test assessed using a SOLO rubric. Semi-structured interviews to explore students’ responses from using the ‘English with Noni’ application and class observation contributed to the qualitative findings. The quantitative result showed that the critical thinking level of the experimental group using this application improved significantly more than the controlled group did. The qualitative result suggested that the experimental group had positive responses to using it. They confirmed that it was interesting. They also admitted that it contributed to developing their critical thinking (i.e., predicting, providing reasons, expressing viewpoints, finding alternatives, and making conclusions), language skills (i.e., listening, reading, and writing), and sub-skill (vocabulary). The findings imply that critical thinking activities and learning affordances provided in the ‘English with Noni’ application is a potential tool to enhance students’ critical thinking infused in the EFL class, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic situation, by emphasizing self-regulated learning.

Abstract

AbstractMicrolearning is becoming more popular in education due to its convenience, flexibility,  and effectiveness.  The popularity emerges from the use of chunking of materials in short and understandable components  that makes it easier for learners to attain the information at their convenience. Preferably, learning materials are microlearning-designed. However, since not many teachers are well-informed about microlearning, the existing learning materials may not be microlearning-based designed. Studies focusing on this issue are relatively limited. This study aims to analyze whether English learning materials at senior high school are designed based on microlearning principles. Twenty four English learning materials covering various types of materials including textbook, e-module, webpage, as well as, pre-recorded teaching and YouTube videos designed for grade X, XI, and XII collected from three senior high schools in Jakarta were analyzed using microlearning framework. The findings of this study show that the existing learning materials do not conform to microlearning  principles. The results of this study reveals the needs to design microlearning-based materials, break the lesson units into micro contents, and produce microlearning object materials for English lessons in high schools. Key Words: microlearning, English learning materials, microlearning object materials
