Abstract

This study examines English teachers’ perspectives on the integration of deep learning-oriented instruction in Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. Drawing on a qualitative research design, the study involved three senior high school English teachers from a public school in North Aceh, Indonesia. The findings indicate that teachers conceptualize deep learning as an approach that emphasizes critical thinking, inquiry, collaboration, problem-solving, and reflective learning rather than surface-level knowledge acquisition. In classroom practice, deep learning was enacted through inquiry-based activities, problem-based tasks, collaborative learning, and reflective practices that encouraged meaningful language use and student engagement. Teachers perceived deep learning as beneficial for enhancing learner autonomy, communicative competence, and higher-order thinking skills. However, several challenges were identified, including limited instructional time, heterogeneous student proficiency, and resource constraints. To address these challenges, teachers adopted adaptive strategies such as scaffolding, differentiated instruction, and flexible task design.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines how meaning and moral equality are negotiated in the multimodal translation of bilingual digital storybooks used in Indonesian primary education. Based on the Multimodal Discourse Translation and Analysis Study, this study adopts a qualitative multimodal case study design that focuses on the bilingual digital storybook Putri dans Hutan. The study involved a textual analysis of bilingual translation units, a multimodal analysis of visual and auditory elements, and classroom-based data collected through observation and interviews with teachers and students. These findings reveal that moral equity in bilingual digital storybooks is not only achieved through verbal translation but emerges through the interaction of translation strategies, multimodal resources, and translanguaging practices in the classroom. Dynamic equality is identified as the dominant translation strategy, especially in the morally charged segment, as it prioritizes emotional accessibility and moral clarity for young learners. When linguistic simplification reduces moral explicitness, visual and auditory elements play a compensatory role by reinforcing emotional cues and moral orientation. Classroom translation further mediates moral understanding, allowing students to negotiate and internalize moral meaning by utilizing Indonesian and English. This study contributes to translation studies by extending the concept of equality into multimodal and pedagogical contexts. It also offers practical implications for educators, translators, and digital media designers by highlighting the importance of multimodal coherence and classroom mediation in conveying moral values through bilingual digital storybooks.

Abstract

The integration of English audio-visual (AV) materials has been widely promoted as an effective approach for enhancing speaking skills in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts; however, a persistent gap remains between its theoretical potential and classroom implementation in Indonesia. This qualitative case study aims to investigate perceptions and challenges of using AV materials for speaking skill development, examining both student and teacher perspectives. The study employed an applied qualitative research design, collecting data through Google Forms, classroom observations, and document analysis, involving two English teachers and 13 students at a private language institute in Lhokseumawe, Indonesia. Thematic analysis revealed a systemic misalignment between stakeholders. Students perceived AV materials as engaging, anxiety-reducing, and essential for accessing authentic language input, and they expressed a strong preference for interactive and creative speaking activities. In contrast, teachers, despite recognizing the pedagogical value of AV materials, faced significant constraints, including limited preparation time, unstable technological infrastructure, exam-oriented curricular pressures, and insufficient Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). This TPACK deficiency led to predominantly input-focused and pedagogically simplified use of AV materials, limiting opportunities for meaningful spoken output. The study concludes that the primary barrier to effective AV integration lies not in technological access but in interconnected institutional, professional, and curricular constraints. To address this gap, the study proposes a tripartite framework consisting of institutional support re-engineering, TPACK-oriented professional development, and curricular realignment to legitimize AV-mediated speaking practice. These findings provide context-sensitive recommendations for transforming AV use from passive consumption into active speaking production in Indonesian EFL classrooms.

Abstract

Reading is one of the most challenging language skills for elementary school students. To obtain a literacygrasp of reading English texts, appropriate learning tactics and approaches are required. This study aimsto explore the scaffolding strategy and the students’ perception on the strategy they used to understandreading text. The study used the descriptive method by collecting data from interviews and questionnaires.Twenty-nine students were given questionnaires to know the impact and usefulness of the Scaffolding.Observation and interviews were used to see the situation in the learning process. Data collected wasanalyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques. Based on the result, there are three types of strategies, namely the pre-reading stage, the reading stage, and the post-reading stage. The types of Scaffoldinggiven by the teacher are Modeling, Bridging, Contextualizing, Schema Building, and Metacognition. Itindicates that scaffolding strategy helps the student pronounce the words and understand the meaning. The study implies that the scaffolding technique is expected to be a reference material and choice forevery teacher in learning to read and understand English texts. Scaffolding is a structured learning supporttechnique used at an early stage to encourage students to learn independently.
