Abstract

Abstract

Narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) is an exportable fish captured by gillnet fishing fleets from Bintan Regency. The fleets are operated in the Riau Archipelago waters but information on their activities is limited. Such information is important to the institution the Agency for Marine and Fisheries Affairs of Archipelagic Riau Province for ensuring the sustainability of the fisheries from both economic and biological perspectives. This study aims to determine the spatial-temporal distributions of the mackerel fishing grounds along the year with reference to the capture data, sea surface temperatures, chlorophyll-a concentrations, and salinities in the last 4 months of 2022. This study analyzed data from a fish export company, the PSDKP office at Tanjungpinang, Bintan, interviews of fishers affiliated with 44 fishing boat samples, and satellite-based marine data. Analysis on the monthly fishing productivity and optimum marine conditions for the mackerels were carried out to determine prospects of five recognized fishing grounds. Besides Lingga Islands, the fishing grounds are highly prospective from August to November. The longest fishing seasons are expected around Bangka Island (11 months). The spatial and temporal patterns show that the north-south-north shifts in fishing grounds that are associated with regional climates, i.e., monsoon winds.

Abstract

One of the biggest commodities in PPN Muara Angke is squid. The condition of Muara Angke port has a floor with black puddles and a bad smell. The unloading workers do not use boots and afron when unloading. Smoking behavior of unloading workers is still found at the frozen squid landing site. The study used a quantitative descriptive analysis approach and SWOT analysis in analyzing the landing of frozen squid at PPN Muara Angke. The results showed that the handling of frozen squid at PPN Muara Angke offers a comprehensive view of the internal and external factors that influence the frozen squid handling activities at Muara Angke fishing port. Responding to these conditions requires an integrated strategy of internal strengths and external opportunities, as well as addressing internal weaknesses to overcome external threats. For example, by optimizing the unloading porters' ability to understand frozen squid quality standards, establishing partnerships with the fishery product processing industry, and strengthening the implementation of SOPs and supervision. Thus, it is expected that these strategies can improve the competitiveness and efficiency of frozen squid handling at PPN Muara Angke, as well as maintain product quality and operational sustainability. Abstract

The Government of Indonesia is implementing a Measured Fishing policy to ensure the sustainable utilization of fishery resources. However, 88% of fish stocks are currently in fully fished (35%) or overfished (53%) condition, which hinders the attainment of maximum sustainable yield (MSY). This study aims to examine the influence of initial biomass (B₀) and annual harvest rate (Yₜ) on the sustainability of annual catch (Cₜ) and remaining biomass (Bₜ) using a logistic differential equation (LDE) model. Simulations were conducted across nine fishery models, combining three levels of B₀ and three levels of Yₜ, under assumptions of carrying capacity (K) of 1000 tons and a hipothetical fish biomass with intrinsic growth rate (r) of 0.05. Results indicate that the ratio of Yₜ to the current sustainable yield (SYₜ) is the primary determinant of stock sustainability and fishery longevity, regardless of B₀. This finding suggests that total allowable catch (TAC) should not be based solely on MSY, but rather adjusted according to SYₜ, while also incorporating precautionary principles and stock recovery strategies. This approach offers a more adaptive and realistic policy framework aligned with current stock conditions and supports the long-term sustainability of capture fisheries.
